THIS WEEK: Dakota State (4-6 overall record) looks to snap their losing skid as they play a pair of non-conference games this week. The Trojans travel to Trinity Bible (N.D.) (2-6) Tuesday (tonight). Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Ray Ulmer Fieldhouse in Ellendale, N.D. DSU returns home to kick off their two-game home stand on Thursday night. The Trojans entertain Martin Luther (Minn.) (0-6)—NCAA Division III and Upper Midwest Athletic Conference member—at DSU Fieldhouse. The game is set to tip off at 7 p.m.
DSU SEARCHING FOR WINS: The Trojans are searching for their first win since Nov. 16 when DSU routed Trinity Bible 90-48 at DSU Fieldhouse. Dakota State had lost four straight regular-season games, including a pair of three-point losses to then-No. 15 Northwestern (Iowa) 69-66 on Nov. 20 and then-No. 9 Evangel (Mo.) of NAIA Division I 80-77 in the Draemel Classic on Nov. 29 in Fremont, Neb.
REGIONALLY SPEAKING: Dakota State, played probably of the toughest schedule in the nation in November, is ranked first in the second edition of the conference rankings with an overall record of 4-6, released on Monday. Presentation sits at No. 2, with an overall record of 8-3 followed by Jamestown (N.D.) at No. 3 with 4-8 record. Mayville State (N.D.) is fourth with a 4-5 overall record and Valley City State (N.D.) is fifth with 2-7 record.
TROJANS' STELLAR DEFENSE: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Tuesday, Dakota State is ranked in seven different categories defensively. The Trojans are 19th in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage defense (29.1 percent), 23rd in defensive rebounds per game (27.9), 26th in scoring defense per game (69.2 points per game) and 26th in field goal percentage defense (41.4 percent). DSU is 36th in the nation in steals per game (8.2), 41st in total steals and 47th in total blocks.
DOMINANCE ON THE BOARDS: Dakota State continues their dominance on the boards. The Trojans are averaging 14.6 offensive rebounds per game, which is 11th-best in the nation. DSU is 14th in the nation in total rebounds per game with an average of 42.5 rebounds per game. Dakota State is 23rd in defensive rebounds per game (27.9) and 42nd in total rebound margin (+4.7). Yusuf Vinson is 15th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (3.6) and 31st in total rebounds per game (8.5). Through 11 games, Dakota State recorded 146 offensive boards to their opponents 108 offensive rebounds. The Trojans had 279 defensive rebounds compared to the opponents 270 defensive rebounds.
TROJANS' OFFENSE: The Trojans have seven different players making at least 20 field goals through 11 games this season, led by Yusuf Vinson with 47 field goals. Dakota State have three players averaging in double digits. Vinson averages 14.1 points per game, Hale 12.2 points per game and Adam Hofer with 11.1 points per game. DSU is shooting 41.4 percent from the field, making 254 field goals in 614 attempts. The Trojans outscored its opponents 711-692 through the first 11 games this season.
500 CAREER POINTS: Cameron Krump had surpassed 500 career points during his era at Dakota State. He currently have 557 points through 67 games played at DSU (8.3 points per game in his career at DSU). Yusuf Vinson is just one point shy of reaching 500th career point at Dakota State. He scores 499 points and averages 11.6 points per game during his career at DSU.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State lost their final exhibition game of the season to NCAA Division I South Dakota State on Dec. 4. The Jackrabbits defeated the Trojans by the score of 88-62. DSU returned home on Dec. 7 versus Morningside (Iowa). The Trojans struggled by shooting 21.2 percent and lost to the Mustangs in a low-scoring affair by the score of 55-35. Trinity Bible split a pair of games last weekend, defeating Faith Baptist 80-73 and losing to North Central in a nail-biter by the score of 87-86. Martin Luther remained winless after dropping a pair of home games last weekend. The Knights lost to Wartburg 78-60 on Dec. 6 and Central 95-67 on Dec. 7.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State had 14 different players scored at least a point and an assist as the Trojans roared past Trinity Bible 90-48 on Nov. 16. DSU won the last meeting with Martin Luther on Dec. 1, 2012 in New Ulm, Minn. The Trojans shot a sizzling 52 percent from the field to earn a 72-59 road victory over the Knights.
TEAM LEADERS: Yusuf Vinson averages 14.1 points per game for the Trojans this season. He shoots 51.1 percent from the field. Vinson records 85 total rebounds this season and averages 8.5 rebounds per game. He records seven blocked shots (0.7 blocked shots per game). Dylan Hale leads the team with 22 assists (2.2 assists per game). He records 18 steals, averaging 1.8 steals per game this season.
