THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University men's basketball team (6-6 overall record) looks to extend their winning streak this week as they play a pair of teams from Iowa. The Trojans entertain AIB (Iowa) (0-11) Tuesday night at DSU Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse. On Saturday, DSU heads on the road to visit Waldorf (Iowa) (4-3). The game is set for 3 p.m. at Hanson Fieldhouse in Forest City, Iowa.
TROJANS' HOT SHOOTING COMBINED WITH IMPRESSIVE DEFENSE: Dakota State shot well above 50 percent in the last two games, resulting in a pair of victories. The Trojans shot season-highs 61.8 percent from the field (42-for-68) and 50 percent from the 3-point arc (9-for-18) in 115-70 rout over Trinity Bible (N.D.) on Dec. 10. It was also the season-high in total points this season with 115, their first time this season that DSU had hit the century mark. The Trojans continued their hot shooting with an 83-44 home victory over Martin Luther (Minn.) on Dec. 12 with a 57.1 percent overall from the field (32-for-56). DSU held its opponents to below 40 percent shooing from the field in those pair of victories—32.5 percent at Trinity Bible on Dec. 10 and 31.7 percent versus Martin Luther (Minn.). DSU gave up 44 points on Dec. 12, season-low that the Trojans had allowed this season.
DSU SNAPS ROAD LOSING SKID: The Trojans ended their losing skid on the road with a 115-70 victory at Trinity Bible (N.D.) on Dec 10 in Ellendale, N.D. Dakota State was winless in three road games this season, losing at Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Nov. 13, Northwestern (Iowa) on Nov. 20 and Mialdn (Neb.) on Nov. 30.
TROJANS KEEP PULLING DOWN REBOUNDS: Dakota State grabbed a season-high 65 rebounds in 115-70 road victory at Trinity Bible (N.D.) on Dec. 10. The Trojans earned 15 offensive rebounds and 50 defensive boards that night. According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Monday, DSU is ranked seventh in the nation in total rebounds per game with an average of 43.9 rebounds per game. The Trojans are 10th in defensive rebounds per game (29.9) and 16th in offensive rebounds per game (14.0). Dakota State averages a rebounding margin of plus-7.3, which is 18th best in the nation.
STELLAR DEFENSE: The Trojans are limiting its opponents to 39.6 percent shooting from the field, which is 9th best in the nation. DSU is holding their opponents to 28.2 percent shooting from the 3-point field goal—8th best in the nation. Dakota State is 18th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing their opponents to 67.2 points per game. The Trojans record 107 total steals (19th best in the nation) and average 8.9 steals per game (24th best in the nation). DSU accumulates a total of 37 blocked shots this season and averages 3.1 blocks per game (both are 18th-best in the nation).
TROJANS AT DSU FIELDHOUSE: Dakota State continues their impressive record at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans are 4-1 at home this season. The Trojans recorded their 16th home victory in the last 19 games at DSU Fieldhouse after DSU's 83-44 victory over Martin Luther (Minn.) on Dec. 12. During men's basketball head coach Gary Garner's arrival at Dakota State, the Trojans are currently 41-19 record at home, a winning percentage of .683.
TWO WINS AWAY: Gary Garner, DSU men's basketball head coach, is two wins away to record his 450th career collegiate coaching victory. His overall record currently stands at 448-359. Garner is 75-60 during his coaching tenure at Dakota State University. His collegiate coaching experience is primarily on NCAA Division I and II levels, including Southeast Missouri State, Fort Hays State, Drake and Missouri Southern.
LAST TIME OUT: The Trojans bounced back in the winning column as they won two straight games last week. DSU snapped their four regular-season game losing skid with a 115-70 thumping at Trinity Bible (N.D.) on Dec. 10. Dakota State returned back to .500 after using a strong second-half surge to storm past Martin Luther (Minn.) 83-44 on Dec. 12. AIB (Iowa) played its only game of the week on Dec. 14, falling at home to Briar Cliff (Iowa) 87-74. Waldorf (Iowa) dropped an 87-75 defeat to Grand View (Iowa) on Dec. 13.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State owns a 3-0 all-time series with AIB (Iowa), including the most recent victory in Des Moines, Iowa last season. After falling by 14 points at halftime, the Trojans stormed back in the final twenty minutes of the game to hang on to a 59-57 victory on Nov. 27, 2012. In both teams' last meeting held at DSU Fieldhouse, which was on Dec. 30, 2011, the Trojans prevailed to a 71-47 victory over the Eagles. DSU and Waldorf met on Nov. 7, 2008 in their last meeting. The Trojans held on to a 60-57 win over the Warriors in Forest City, Iowa.
TEAM LEADERS: Yusuf Vinson averages 14.9 points per game for the Trojans this season. He shoots 53.6 percent from the field. Vinson records 106 total rebounds (20th best in the nation) this season and averages 8.8 rebounds per game (ranks 26th in the nation). He records seven blocked shots (0.6 blocked shots per game). Adam Hofer leads the team with 24 assists (2.7 assists per game). Dylan Hale averages 1.8 steals per game and ranks 42nd in the nation in total steals with 21. He is 49th in the nation in total 3-point field goals made (28).
