ROME, Ga. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced Friday that 259 football student-athletes have been named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Zach Ely, a junior wide receiver for Dakota State (S.D.), earned this prestigious honor for his academic success in the classroom.
In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.
Ely was named to the inaugural North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) All-Conference First Team in November. He led the Trojans with 42 receptions for a total of 801 yards in 2013. Ely averaged 19.1 yards per catch and 80.1 receiving yards per game.
Ely was selected to NSAA Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week on Sept. 23 after producing a career-high 179 receiving yards (35.8 yards per catch) and caught three touchdown passes in 35-28 road victory at Presentation (S.D.).
Zach is the son of Scott and Sara Ely of Colton, S.D. He is majoring in Exercise Science at Dakota State University.
