THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University Lady T's basketball team (6-9 overall record) returns back to the Midwest region after they played two games in California. The Lady T's look to snap their two-game losing streak as they play a pair of ranked teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference in the Briar Cliff (Iowa) Holiday Classic on Monday and Tuesday.
BRIAR CLIFF (IOWA) HOLIDAY CLASSIC: The Briar Cliff (Iowa) Holiday Classic features a pair of opponents from the North Star Athletic Association and Great Plains Athletic Conference, including three ranked opponents. On the first day of the classic on Monday (Dec. 30), the fifth-ranked Jamestown (N.D.) (13-1) will face No. 13 Morningside (Iowa) (11-3) at 1 p.m. The Lady T's will visit No. 19 Briar Cliff (Iowa) (9-5) in the nightcap at 5:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Dec. 31, DSU will play Morningside (Iowa) at 1 p.m. and Jamestown battles with the host-team Briar Cliff at 5:30 p.m. All games will be held at the Newman Flanagan Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
CALIFORNIA TRIP RECAP: The Lady T's travel to California last weekend for a pair of games against members of NAIA Division I schools. DSU made their first stop at Cal State San Marcos on Friday, Dec. 20 in Oceanside, Calif. The Lady T's raced to an early lead, but fell short to the Cougars by the score of 76-66. On Saturday, Dec. 21, Dakota State traveled to El Cajon, Calif. to take on San Diego Christian (Calif.). The Hawks used a strong first-half closing run and defeated DSU 77-62.
LADY T'S KEEP RACKING UP BLOCKS: Alyson Drooger currently leads the nation in NAIA Division II for most total blocks. Through 15 games this season, she accumulated a total of 50 blocked shots. She averages 3.3 blocks per game, which ranks her fourth in the nation. As a team, the Lady T's ranks third in the nation for total blocks with 78. Dakota State is 5th in the nation in blocks per game with an average of 5.2 blocks.
DEFENSE RANKS: According to the NAIA-Dakstats statistical website as of Thursday, the Lady T's are 22nd in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage defense. DSU limited their opponents 59-of-214 from the 3-point line for a percentage of 27.6. Dakota State is 36th in the nation in field goal percentage defense (37.4 percent—370-of-989). The Lady T's are 5-0 record this season while holding their opponents to less than 69 points, 4-0 when DSU allowed to score between 60-69 points. DSU is 6-2 when the opponents shoot below 40 percent.
DSU SHOOTS ABOVE 40 PERCENT: As a team, Dakota State is shooting 43.9 percent from the field (377-for-858) through 15 games this season. The Lady T's are ranked 18th in the nation in field goal percentage and 26th in total scoring offense with 1,040 total points. DSU have 14 different players that are shooting above 40 percent. The Lady T's are 5-4 record this season while shooting 40 percent or better, including a 2-1 record when DSU shot 50 percent or better from the field.
LADY T'S HUSTLE STATS: The Lady T's are ranked 27th in the nation in total assists (211). DSU averaged 28.5 defensive rebounds per game, which is 38th-best in the nation. Dakota State stole the ball 127 times this season, ranking them 40th in the nation as a team. DSU is 46th in the nation in assists per game with an average of 14.1 assists per game.
DRAINING 3S: Dakota State is ranked No. 15 in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (34.9). The Lady T's drained 80 3-pointers (41st in the nation) in 229 attempts. Kylie Westover is 22nd in the nation in total 3-pointers made with 35. She averages 2.3 3-point field goal made per game, which is 44th-best in the nation. Westover had amassed a total of 201 3-pointers during her career at Dakota State. She is third in the Lady T's record book for career 3-point field goal made (Kathy Shypulski holds the school record for 248 career 3-point field goals made from 1997-2001).
LAST MEETING: Briar Cliff had won the last five meetings with Dakota State. The Chargers defeated the Lady T's in the last meeting on Dec. 17, 2012 at DSU Fieldhouse by the score of 91-74. The last time DSU beat Briar Cliff was on Nov. 29, 2008 as the Lady T's hang on to an 81-75 victory on BC's home floor. Morningside won the last meeting with the Lady T's on Dec. 7 at DSU Fieldhouse. The Mustangs held on to a seven-point halftime lead and defeated DSU by the score of 87-62. The Lady T's are seeking for their first win over Morningside since Nov. 7, 2007 where Dakota State won by the score of 92-82 at DSU Fieldhouse.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State went 0-2 on their California trip, losing to a pair of NAIA Division I opponents. The Lady T's fell short to Cal State San Marcos 76-66 on Dec. 20 and San Diego Christian (Calif.) 77-62 on Dec. 21. Briar Cliff suffered a pair of defeats in the Cruisin' Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The Chargers dropped a 71-47 contest versus Young Harris (Ga.) on Dec. 19 and No. 8 Saint Xavier (Ill.) 93-72 on Dec. 20. Morningside extended their winning streak to five games after recording a pair of home victories. The Mustangs defeated Nebraska Wesleyan in GPAC conference play 82-57 on Dec. 14 and Peru State (Neb.) 99-64 in a non-conference play.
TEAM LEADERS: Kylie Westover leads the Lady T's in scoring with an average of 14.0 points per game. She shoots 40.7 percent from the field. Alyson Drooger averages 5.4 rebounds (81 total rebounds) and 3.3 blocks per game (50 total blocks) for DSU. She leads the team with 31 assists and averages 2.1 assists per game. BreeAna Olson stole the ball 29 steals this season, averaging 1.9 steals per game.
