THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University Lady T's basketball team (8-12 overall record) continues their three-game home stand on Wednesday evening. The Lady T's entertain the nationally-ranked No. 23 Briar Cliff (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletics Conference. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D.
LADY T'S VERSUS NAIA NATIONALLY-RANKED TEAMS: Wednesday's game will make the fifth time this season that the Lady T's had faced a nationally-ranked team—all from the Great Plains Athletic Conference. DSU is searching for their first victory against NAIA's 'Top 25' teams this season. The Lady T's fell short to then-No. 7 Northwestern (Iowa) 82-73 on Nov. 20 in Orange City, Iowa. Dakota State lost twice to Morningside (Iowa) (then-No. 12 and No. 13) in the month of December and Briar Cliff (Iowa) 89-73 on Dec. 30.
DSU VS. GPAC: Dakota State is 1-8 record against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) this season. The Lady T's defeated Midland (Neb.) - which was ranked No. 10 in the first– and second-edition of the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball 'Top 25' national poll in December—by the score of 63-61 in Fremont, Neb. DSU lost Mount Marty (S.D.) and Morningside (Iowa) twice, Briar Cliff, Hastings (Neb.), Northwestern (Iowa) and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) this season.
DROOGER & LADY T'S TOP NATION IN BLOCKS: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Monday, Alyson Drooger maintained the top spot for most blocks and blocks per game. She accumulated a total of 85 blocked shots this season, which is the second most blocks in a single season in Lady T's record book. Drooger is averaging 4.3 blocks per game to lead the nation. Dakota State is top in the nation in total blocks with 121 blocks. The Lady T's are averaging 6.1 blocks per game, which is second-best in the nation.
RAINING 3s: Dakota State is ranked 33rd in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (33.3 percent). The Lady T's had made 108 3-poiinters this season, ranking them 40th-best in the nation. Kylie Westover ranks 22nd in the nation in total 3-point field goals made (40) and 43rd in 3-point field goal made per game (2.3).
LADY T'S IN THE RANKS: The Lady T's had scored a total of 1,348 points this season through 20 games, ranking them 21st most points in the nation. Dakota State is 24th in the nation in field goal percentage (43 percent) and 26th in total assists (269). DSU records a total of 164 steals (39th in the nation), 38 percent field goal percentage defense (40th in the nation) and 27.7 defensive rebounds per game (47th in the nation).
REGIONALLY SPEAKING: For the fourth straight week, there is no changes in the weekly North Star Athletic Association rankings that was released on Jan. 13. Jamestown (N.D.) holds the No. 1 spot with a 16-1 overall record. Mayville State (N.D.) (13-2) is second, followed by Valley City State (N.D.) (8-6) at No. 3, Dakota State (S.D.) (8-12) at No. 4 and Presentation (S.D.) (3-13) at No. 5. The North Star Athletic Association conference play will officially kick off on Wednesday, Jan. 22 with Dakota State hosting Presentation in Madison and Mayville State traveling to Jamestown in a battle of NAIA's 'Top 25' teams in Jamestown, N.D.
DSU JUNIOR VARSITY TEAM MAKES IT 8-1 RECORD: The Dakota State University Lady T's basketball junior varsity raised their overall record to 8-1 after storming past their in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) 78-45 at DSU Fieldhouse on Jan. 10. The Lady T's shot a sizzling 51.7 percent from the field while holding the Lancers to 27.3 percent in the game. It was the second straight game that DSU junior varsity team holding their opponents to 45 points (defeated Morningside 80-45 on Dec. 7 in Madison). The Lady T's junior varsity team is scheduled to kick off their three-game road stretch, starting with Northwestern (Iowa) on Thursday night in Orange City, Iowa at 6 p.m. and continue with another road trip to Mitchell, S.D. at Dakota Wesleyan on Jan. 20 (6 p.m.).
LAST TIME OUT: The Lady T's returned home to start their three-game home stand at DSU Fieldhouse. DSU played their in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) on Jan. 10. The Lancers came on top by the score of 82-64. Briar Cliff (Iowa) split a pair of GPAC conference games last week. The Chargers defeated Mount Marty on Jan. 8 78-70 in Yankton, S.D., but dropped an 83-68 contest to Midland (Neb.) on Jan. 11 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
LAST MEETING: Briar Cliff (Iowa) had won the last meeting with the Lady T's in the Briar Cliff Holiday Classic on Dec. 30 in Sioux City, Iowa. The Chargers used a fast start and never trailed in the game to defeat DSU 89-73. BC had won the last six meetings with the Lady T's. The last time DSU defeated Briar Cliff was on Nov. 29, 2008 in Sioux City, Iowa by the score of 81-75. The last time the Lady T's had defeated the Chargers at DSU Fieldhouse was on Nov. 11, 2006 by hitting the century mark—101-57.
QUICK LEADERS: Kylie Westover leads the Lady T's offense with 13.9 points per game and ranks 42nd in the nation in total scoring with 278 points. She shoots 39 percent from the field. Alyson Drooger leads the team in three different categories. She averages 5.8 rebounds (115 total rebounds), 2.4 assists (47 total assists) and 4.3 blocks per game (85 total blocks). BreeAna Olson records 40 steals and averages 2.0 steals per game for Dakota State. She ranks 33rd in the nation in total steals.
