SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The Dakota State University indoor track and field excelled in their first meet of 2014 in the Dordt (Iowa) Open at Dordt College Recreation Center. Seth Boomsma claimed an individual title in automatic qualifying time and two throwers set a new DSU school record at the meet.
Boomsma won the men's 55-meter dash prelims by clocking a time of 6.46 seconds and advanced to the finals. Spencer Carlson was 15th in 6.69 seconds. Marty Hargrove was 22nd (6.74 seconds), followed by his teammates D'Artist Williams 23rd (6.75 seconds) and Trevor Jacobsen 29th (6.80 seconds).
Boomsma improved his time to 6.32 seconds as he won the men's 55-meter dash finals. As a result, he qualified for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Nationals for his second consecutive year.
Two DSU throwers set a new school record in weight throw at the Dordt Open. Ryan Gimbel continued to break his personal and DSU school records in the men's weight throw. He threw a measurement of 51 feet for a third-place finish. Trevor Van Tilburg was eighth (45 feet and 11.25 inches).
Gimbel finished tied for eighth in the men's shot put with a measurement of 44 feet and 7 inches.
Shayna Dwyer set a new DSU school record in the women's weight throw. She recorded a measurement of 44 feet and 5.25 inches (previously held by Ashley Currey with 43 feet and 0.5 inches in 2013) for a 10th-place finish. Currey was 11th with a measurement of 42 feet and 7.5 inches. Kelci Viesselman was 27th (35 feet and 11.5 inches).
Currey threw a measurement of 33 feet and 3.25 inches to earn 19th-place finish in the women's shot put. Viesselman was 25th (32 feet and 2 inches) and Dwyer finished 26th (32 feet and 0.25 inches).
Michael Hoffman ran a time of 9:13.49 to earn fifth-place finish in the men's 3000-meter run. Taylor Hauge was 17th in 9:41.64. Michael Carson recorded a time of 9:55.52 for a 24th-place finish. Caleb Hemphill was 43rd (10:42.16).
Carson clocked a time of 5:02.12 for a 27th-place finish in the men's 1-mile run. Hemphill placed 33rd in 5:19.95.
Two DSU women's middle distance runners finished in the 'Top 15' in the meet. Victoria Sopko placed 12th in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:47.78. Kayla Sveen finished 13th in the 800-meter run in 2:37.87.
Anastasia Gentles ran a time of 12:39.43 to finish 13th in the women's 3000-meter run.
Five Trojan men's runners ran in the 200-meter dash. Jacobsen clocked a time of 23.76 seconds for a 23rd-place finish, followed by his teammate Williams with a 24th-place finish in 23.82 seconds. Carlson was 29th in 23.99 seconds. Hargrove finished 35th in 24.19 seconds. Sotir ran a time of 24.53 seconds for a 42nd-place finish.
Mitch Trestrail finished 33rd in the men's 400-meter dash in 55.98 seconds.
Sara Friesen was 31st in the women's 55-meter dash (8.13 seconds) and 42nd in women's 200-meter dash (30.71 seconds).
The men's 4 x 400-meter relay team – consisted of Trestrail, Selchert, Truman and Moeller – ran a time of 3:39.29 to finish 16th. The other DSU 4 x 400-meter relay team (Clark, Claudio Tejada, Sutton and Knutson) was 23rd in 3:47.73.
Dakota State continues their action next Saturday (Jan. 25) as they head to Wayne, Neb. The Trojans compete in the Wildcat Open, hosted by NCAA Division II Wayne State (Neb.). The meet will be held at WSC Recreation Center.
