THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University Lady T's basketball team (8-13 overall record, 0-0 NSAA) begins their inaugural North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference play on Wednesday evening, hosting Presentation (S.D.) (4-13, 0-0 NSAA). The first-ever NSAA conference game for both teams is set for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D. On Saturday, the Lady T's play their final non-conference game on the road. DSU will visit Dordt (Iowa) (9-11) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at DeWitt Gymnasium in Sioux Center, Iowa.
ABOUT NORTH STAR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION: The North Star Athletic Association conference consists of five teams this season including Dakota State (S.D.), Jamestown (N.D.), Mayville State (N.D.), Presentation (S.D.) and Valley City State (N.D.). Each NSAA members will play a total of eight conference games—four games at home and four games on the road—from late January through February. The NSAA Conference Women's Basketball Postseason Tournament begins on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Jamestown is the preseason favorite to win the inaugural league title, while DSU was picked to finish fourth and Presentation fifth. Kylie Westover of DSU was selected to the NSAA Women's Basketball All-Conference Preseason Team. Dickinson State (N.D.) will join the NSAA conference in the beginning of 2014-15 academic year.
LADY T'S & DROOGER MAINTAIN NATION LEADER IN BLOCKS: The Lady T's maintained their lead in the nation for total blocks with 127 blocks this season. DSU averages 6.0 blocks per game, which is second-best in the nation. Alyson Drooger currently leads the nation in total blocks and blocks per game. She accumulated a total of 89 blocks through 21 games this season, which is the second-most blocks in a single season. Drooger averaged 4.2 blocks per game for DSU.
REGIONALLY SPEAKING: The North Star Athletic Association weekly rankings had been remained unchanged for the fifth consecutive week as Jamestown (N.D.) holds the No. 1 spot with an overall record of 18-1. Mayville State (N.D.) is second with 14-2 overall record, followed by Valley City State (N.D.) (10-6 overall record), Dakota State (S.D.) at No. 4 (8-13 overall record) and Presentation (S.D.) at No. 5 spot (4-13 overall record). The weekly rankings are used to rank the teams in the weekly NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' 'Top 25' national poll, which are released every Tuesday afternoon.
MAKE IT 300 POINTS: Kylie Westover had poured in 300 points this season for the Lady T's, which is 46th best in the nation. She drained a total of 51 3-pointers this season, ranking her 19th in the nation. Westover is 34th in the nation in 3-point field gola made per game with an average of 2.4 3-pointers.
LADY T'S OFFENSIVE RANKS: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Monday, the Lady T's are 26th in the nation in field goal percentage (42.7). DSU is 31st in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (33.0) and 33rd in total scoring offense with 1,415 points. The Lady T's had produced a total of 285 assists, ranking them 34th-best in the nation. Dakota State had made 117 3-pointers this season (ranks 45th in the nation).
DSU JUNIOR VARSITY UPDATES: Inclement weather and unfavorable driving conditions had forced the postponement of Lady T's last two road games at Northwestern (Iowa) on Jan. 16 and at Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Jan. 20. Dakota State—with an overall record of 8-1 and undefeated versus NAIA junior varsity opponents—is scheduled to play a junior varsity action on Monday, Jan. 27 at NCAA Division II Northern State (S.D.). Tip-off from the Wachs Arena is set for 7 p.m. in Aberdeen, S.D.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State dropped their second game of the three-game home stand on Jan. 15 with a 75-67 defeat to Briar Cliff (Iowa). The Chargers outrebounded the Lady T's 55-42 in the game to earn the victory. Presentation ended their three-game losing skid with an 85-52 home victory over Trinity Bible (N.D.) on Jan. 14 in Aberdeen. Dordt suffered a pair of GPAC conference defeats, losing to the top-ranked team Northwestern (Iowa) 76-62 on Jan. 15 and 67-62 at Doane (Neb.) on Jan. 18.
LAST MEETING: The Lady T's won the first meeting as a non-conference game at Presentation (S.D.) in DSU's season opener on Oct. 30. DSU opened the game by scoring four straight points and never trailed in the game to defeat the Saints by the score of 71-60, giving the Lady T's their ninth consecutive season-opening victory since 2005. Dordt survived a furious late-game charge by Dakota State in both teams' last meeting on Jan. 9, 2013 at DSU Fieldhouse. The Defenders built a 25-point lead with 8:46 remaining in the game, but the Lady T's stormed back within two points in closing seconds. DC held on to an 81-79 victory over DSU.
QUICK LEADERS: Kylie Westover leads the Lady T's in scoring with 14.3 points per game. She shoots 39.3 percent from the field. Westover had scored in double digits 18 times out of 21 games this season for DSU. Alyson Drooger averages 5.8 rebounds (122 total rebounds), 2.3 assists (49 total assists) and 4.2 blocks per game (89 total blocks) for the Lady T's. BreeAna Olson leads the team with 42 steals (2.0 steals per game). She ranks 44th in the nation in total steals.
