THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University Trojan men's basketball team (8-11 overall record, 0-0 NSAA) kicks off their inaugural North Star Athletic Association conference play at home on Wednesday night. The Trojans welcome Presentation (S.D.) (11-5, 0-0 NSAA) in both teams' first-ever NSAA conference game. Tip-off from the DSU Fieldhouse is set for 7:30 p.m. On Saturday afternoon, DSU plays their final non-conference game of the 2013-14 season as they visit the nationally-ranked No. 5 Dordt (Iowa) (19-2) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at DeWitt Gymnasium in Sioux Center, Iowa.
ABOUT THE NORTH STAR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION: The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference consists of five members this season including Dakota State (S.D.), Jamestown (N.D.), Mayville State (N.D.), Presentation (S.D.) and Valley City State (N.D.). Each NSAA members will play a total of eight conference games—four games at home and four games on the road—from late January through February. Dakota State is the NSAA preseason conference favorite to win the inaugural league title. Miguel Sansavour and Yusuf Vinson were selected on the NSAA Men's Basketball All-Conference Preseason Team. Dickinson State (N.D.) will join the NSAA conference, beginning in the 2014-15 academic year.
GARNER TABS CAREER VICTORY No. 450: Dakota State men's basketball head coach Gary Garner earned his career victory No. 450 after a 73-62 home victory versus NCAA Division II South Dakota Mines. Garner had accumulated a total of 77 victories since his arrival at Dakota State five years ago. He had previously coached at Southeast Missouri State, Fort Hays State (Kan.), Drake (Iowa) and Missouri Southern.
TROJANS SNAP LOSING SKID: The Trojans ended their five-game losing skid with a 73-62 impressive victory over former long-time conference foe and current member of NCAA Division II South Dakota Mines on Jan. 15. It was the first victory since Dec. 17 as DSU stormed past AIB (Iowa) 101-69 at DSU Fieldhouse. After the victory on Jan. 15, the Trojans improved their home record to 6-3.
DOUBLE DIGITS SCORING: Dylan Hale had scored in double digits 13 times this season, including the last eight games for the Trojans. He posted at least 20 points in five games of the last six games. Marcus Smith and Miguel Sansavour each scored in double digits in the last three games for DSU. Smith scored in double digits in 12 games this season, while Sansavour recorded double-digit points 7 times. Adam Hofer posted double digits points six times this year.
HOME COOKING: Dakota State is 6-3 at DSU Fieldhouse this season. The Trojans opened their home schedule with a 3-0 record after defeating Mount Marty (S.D.), then-No. 15 Northwestern (Iowa) and Trinity Bible (N.D.). DSU accumulated a record of 43-21 home record at DSU Fieldhouse in the last five seasons, posting a season-best home record of 10-2 during the 2012-13 season.
LAST TIME OUT: The Trojans split a pair of games last week, falling short to Morningside (Iowa) (receiving votes in the latest NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' national poll) 82-77 on Jan. 15 in Sioux City. Dakota State bounced back in the winning column after defeating NCAA Division II South Dakota Mines 73-62 on Jan. 18 at DSU Fieldhouse. Presentation (S.D.) defeated Trinity Bible (N.D.) 88-64 on Jan. 14 in Aberdeen, S.D. The Saints improved their home record to 8-1 after the victory. Dordt (Iowa) extended their winning streak to three games after winning a pair of GPAC conference games last week, defeating Northwestern (Iowa) 78-64 on Jan. 15 and Doane (Neb.) 92-81 on Jan. 18.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State won the last meeting with Presentation (S.D.) on Nov. 20, 2012 at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans opened up with a 6-0 lead and never trailed in the game to earn a 77-58 victory over the Saints. DSU upset the national-ranked Dordt in the last meeting at DSU Fieldhouse on Jan. 9, 2013. The Defenders, who were ranked No. 10 in the last meeting with DSU, built an eight-point lead before the Trojans took over with a second-half surge. DSU won by the score of 83-65. The last time both teams met in Sioux Center, Iowa was on Jan. 11, 2012 as the Defenders (ranked in the NAIA's Top 25 at that time) survived by defeating DSU 73-71. The shot by the Trojans at the buzzer fell short.
QUICK LEADERS: Dylan Hale leads the Trojans in scoring with an average of 16.1 points per game. He shoots 41.6 percent from the field. Hale ranks 48th in the nation in total steals with 48 steals. Yusuf Vinson leads the team with 142 rebounds (8.4 rebounds per game—35th in the nation in total rebounds per game). He is 27th in the nation in free throw percentage (85.5 percent) Cameron Robinson records 74 assists (4.9 assists per game—28th in the nation in assists per game) and 29 steals (1.9 steals per game—34th in the nation in steals per game). Taylor Zirbel averages 0.6 blocked shots per game (9 blocks). Miguel Sansavour ranks 10th in the nation in total blocks with 35 blocks.
