MANKATO, Minn. – The Dakota State University indoor track and field teams competed on the second day of the Minnesota State-Mankato Open at Myers Fieldhouse. The Trojans placed in six different events in the 'Top 10', featuring numerous schools from NCAA Division II schools.
Seth Boomsma, who already qualified for NAIA Indoor Track and Field Nationals for his second straight year, ran a time of 6.77 seconds in the men's 60-meter dash to place second in the prelims and advanced to the finals. Also running in the men's 60-meter dash prelims are Spencer Carlson with a 15th-place finish (7.18 seconds), Marty Hargrove 20th place finish (7.23 seconds) and Trevor Jacobsen 26th place (7.33 seconds).
Boomsma fell to seventh-place finish in the men's 60-meter dash finals with a time of 8.38 seconds.
Zach Ely set a new personal best time for his second straight week in the men's 60-meter hurdles. He recorded a new personal record time of 8.61 seconds to finish seventh and advanced to the finals. Edward Clark was 16th in 9.05 seconds and David Sotir recorded a time of 9.26 seconds to finish 19th in the men's 60-meter hurdles prelims.
Ely improved to sixth-place finish the men's 60-meter hurdle finals with a time of 8.68 seconds.
Heather Dearing finished seventh in the women's high jump. She leaped with a height measurement of 1.59 meters. Elizabeth Atkins was 17th (1.53 meters).
Victoria Sopko ran a time of 1:45.69 to finish 10th in the women's 600-meter dash. Kayla Sveen was 18th in 1:49.40.
Taylor Hauge recorded a time of 4:45.36 to finish 11th in the men's one-mile run.
In the men's shot put, Ryan Gimbel threw a measurement of 13.04 meters to earn a 12th-place finish.
Selchert was 15th in the men's 800-meter run with a time of two minutes and .73 seconds.
Other DSU women's place finishers at the Minnesota State-Mankato Open are: Sara Friesen (34th in women's 60-meter dash prelims – 8.78 seconds and 59th in women's 200-meter dash – 30.09 seconds); Sveen (55th in women's 200-meter dash – 29.34 seconds); Sopko (58th in women's 200-meter dash – 29.73 seconds); Anastasia Gentles (24th in women's 1000-meter run – 3:47.73 and 31st in women's 1-mile run – 6:19.64); Ashley Currey (25th in women's shot put – 10.93 meters); Clara Schild (32nd in women's shot put – 10.53 meters); Shayna Dwyer (35th in women's shot put – 9.92 meters) and Kelci Viesselman (36th in women's shot put – 9.91 meters).
Other DSU men's place finishers at the Minnesota State-Mankato Open are: Hargrove (32nd in 200-meter dash – 23.99 seconds); Jacobsen (33rd in 200-meter dash – 24.02 seconds); Sotir (39th in men's 200-meter dash – 24.40 seconds) and Carlson (43rd in 200-meter dash – 24.84 seconds).
Dakota State will take the majority of the team members to the University of South Dakota Open next Saturday (Feb. 8). The meet will be held at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D. Partial members of the Trojan indoor track and field teams head to Lincoln, Neb. to compete in the annual Frank Sevigne Invitational, hosted by the University of Nebraska, on Feb. 8 (next Saturday).
