THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University Trojan men's basketball team (10-13 overall record, 2-1 North Star Athletic Association conference record) continues their NSAA conference games with a pair of road games this week. The Trojans visits the NSAA's conference leader Jamestown (N.D.) (11-11, 3-0 NSAA) on Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Center in Jamestown, N.D. On Saturday evening, DSU travels to the Strode Center in Aberdeen, S.D. to take on Presentation (S.D.) (12-7, 1-2 NSAA). The game is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m.
NSAA CONFERENCE SCHEDULE: The first-half portion of the North Star Athletic Association conference schedule ends on Wednesday night as Dakota State heads to Jamestown (N.D.). The Trojans kick off their second-half portion of the NSAA conference schedule with four games remaining, starting with Presentation (S.D.) on Saturday. DSU will host Valley City State (N.D.) and Jamestown (N.D.) and visits Mayville State (N.D.) in the second-half of the NSAA conference schedule. The Trojans are currently in a tie for second-place with Valley City State (N.D.) in the NSAA men's basketball conference standings with a 2-1 conference record.
DOUBLE DIGIT WINS FOR 5TH STRAIGHT YEAR: Dakota State earned their 10th victory of the season after dominating Mayville State (N.D.) 90-60 on Jan. 29. It was the fifth straight year that the Trojans recorded their double digit victories. It was the first time since 1988-94 seasons (6 straight seasons) that Dakota State recorded double-digit victories.
SANSAVOUR SETS SCHOOL'S BLOCK RECORDS: Miguel Sansavour broke a new DSU school record for most blocked shots in a single season. He accumulated a total of 43 blocks through 17 games. The previous old record mark was set by Tyrone Davis with 32 blocks in a single season. Sansavour is currently fifth in the Trojan men's basketball record book for most career blocks (Brian Bolin holds the DSU school record with 88 career blocks from 2006-10). According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Tuesday, Sansavour ranks 11th in the nation in total blocks.
REGIONALLY SPEAKING: Jamestown (N.D.) holds the top spot in the seventh weekly North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference rankings with an overall record of 11-11. Presentation (S.D.) is at No. 2 with 12-7 overall record. Both Dakota State (S.D.) (10-13 overall record) and Valley City State (N.D.) (10-11) are tied for third in the weekly rankings. Mayville State (N.D.) is at No. 5 with an overall record of 6-14. The weekly rankings are used to determined the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 rankings, which is released every Tuesday afternoon.
RECORDS WATCH: Dylan Hale drained a total of 61 3-pointers this season. He is just one 3-pointer short of joining the Top 10 in the Trojan men's basketball record book for most 3-point field goals made in a single season. Hale ranks 19th in the nation in 3-piont field goals made per game with an average of 2.7. He is 21st in the nation in total 3-pointers made. Hale had made at least a 3-pointer in every game for the Trojans, including a season-high 7 3-pointers (7-for-10) at Dordt (Iowa) on Jan. 25. His 7 3-pointers tied for sixth-most 3-pointers in a single game and tied for ninth-best 3-point field goal percentage (70 percent) in the Trojan men's basketball record book.
LAST TIME OUT: The Trojans split a pair of NSAA conference games last week. DSU remained undefeated at home in the NSAA conference with a 90-60 rout over Mayville State (N.D.) on Jan. 29. Valley City State (N.D.) handed DSU their first NSAA conference loss on Feb. 1 by the score of 88-63 in Valley City, N.D. Jamestown (N.D.) built a 16-point halftime lead before the Vikings mounted a furious second-half comeback. The Jimmies held on to a 71-69 victory over VCSU to remained undefeated in three NSAA conference games. It was the sixth straight victory for the Jimmies. Presentation (S.D.) held on to a 70-69 road victory at Mayville State (N.D.) on Feb. 1. It was the first NSAA conference victory for the Saints.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State had won the last four meetings with Jamestown (N.D.) last season. The Jimmies defeated the Trojans in the first meeting in the Dakota Tip-off Classic on Jan. 19, 2012, but UJ used an ineligible player in the game which gave DSU a forfeit victory. DSU recorded 74-62 victory at DSU Fieldhouse on Feb. 2, 2013 and 66-60 on Feb. 13, 2013 in Jamestown, N.D. during the regular-season. Both Trojans and Jimmies met in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Postseason Championships game for the second straight season on Feb. 24, 2013 in Jamestown. The Trojans fell to a 51-33 halftime, but roared back in the second-half by outscoring UJ 45-25 to earn a 78-76 thriller. Dakota State won the first-ever NSAA meeting with Presentation (S.D.) on Jan. 22 at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans held on to an 83-78 victory.
QUICK LEADERS: Dylan Hale leads the Trojans with 16.6 points per game and shoots 40.6 percent from the field. Yusuf Vinson records 164 total rebounds and averages 8.2 rebounds per game. He ranks 26th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (3.1) and 31st in free-throw percentage (83.8 percent). Miguel Sansavour also averaged 8.2 rebounds per game and ranks 11th in the nation with 43 blocks. Cameron Robinson leads the team with 91 assists (4.8 assists per game—ranks 28th in the nation) and 36 steals (1.9 steals per game—ranks 29th in the nation). Hale adds 41 steals (29th in the nation) and averages 1.8 steals per game (32nd in the nation) Vinson averages 0.5 blocks per game (11 total blocks) for the Trojans.
