MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was tabbed to finish third in the inaugural North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Softball Coaches' Preseason poll, announced Thursday. The NSAA preseason softball poll was voted by the league coaches.
Jamestown (N.D.) was picked as the league favorite to win the title with four first-place votes and tallied 24 points. Dakota State earned the final first-place vote with 15 points to finish third in the NSAA softball preseason coaches' poll.
Valley City State (N.D.) is second with 17 points. Presentation (S.D.) is at No. 4 spot with 12 points and Mayville State (N.D.) is 5th with 7 points.
The Trojans finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 16-18, including an appearance in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.)/Frontier Unaffiliated Softball Qualifying Conference Tournament.
Dakota State is scheduled to kick off their 2014 season with a four-game series at Saint Mary (Neb.) in Omaha on March 1-2.
The first-ever North Star conference four-game series is set for April 5-6. Dakota State is slated to host Mayville State at Thue Softball Complex in Madison.
DSU's softball 2014 schedule includes a 22-game home stand at Thue Softball Complex from April 3 through April 21.
The North Star-Frontier Softball Conference Tournament takes place in Jamestown, N.D. on May 2-4. The six-team double-elimination unaffiliated conference tournament format will be played at the Lyle Lawrence Field. The top six teams based upon the last regular-season ranking in the NSAA-Frontier unaffiliated grouping will participate in the conference tournament.
The winner of the NSAA-Frontier Softball Conference Tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Softball National Tournament Opening Round on May 12-14.
