MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was picked to finish fourth in the first-ever North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball Coaches' Preseason Poll, announced Friday. The North Star preseason baseball poll was voted by the league's head coaches.
Jamestown (N.D.) is the NSAA Baseball Preseason favorite to win the conference title with three first-place votes. The Jimmies had a slim one-point lead over second-place Mayville State (N.D.) 23-22 in the preseason coaches' poll. Valley City State (N.D.) had 13 points to place third in the poll, followed by Dakota State fourth with 12 points and Presentation (S.D.) fifth with 5 points.
DSU finished their 2013 season with an overall record of 11-30. The Trojans went 1-2 record in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Baseball Conference Qualifying Tournament.
Dakota State will kick off their 2014 season in Goodwell, Okla. The Trojans visit Oklahoma Panhandle State in a three-game series, starting on Sunday, Feb. 16 with a doubleheader and ending on Monday, Feb. 17 with the third game of the three-game series.
DSU's home opener is scheduled for Thursday, March 20 at Flynn Field versus long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).
The first-ever North Star baseball conference games get underway on March 29-30. The Trojans are schedule to host Mayville State (N.D.) in a four-game series at Flynn Field.
The North Star-Frontier Conference Baseball Conference Tournament will be held in Valley City, N.D. The six-team double-elimination unaffiliated conference tournament format will be played at the Charlie Brown Memorial Field. All five NSAA schools along with a member from the Frontier Conference—Dickinson State (N.D.)—will compete in the conference tournament.
The winner of the NSAA-Frontier Baseball Conference Tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Round on May 12-15.
