THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University indoor track & field teams prepare for their upcoming meet Saturday at the Dordt (Iowa) Invitational. Seth Boomsma will travel to Ames, Iowa to compete in the NCAA Division I Iowa State Open Friday and Saturday.
DORDT (IOWA) INVITATIONAL: Saturday's meet will mark the second time that Dakota State had competed at the Dordt Recreation Center (previously on Jan. 18). The meet is held in Sioux Center, Iowa. The first event is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. with the women's long jump, women's pole vault, women's weight throw and men's high jump. The first running events is slated for 10:30 a.m. with the women's and men's distance medley relay.
BOOMSMA INVITED TO RUN AT ISU OPEN: Seth Boomsma, currently the second-fastest runner in the NAIA with a time of 6.75 seconds, was invited to compete in the NCAA Division I Iowa State Open on Friday and Saturday. Boomsma, a two-time North Star Men's Indoor Track Athlete-of-the-Week, is the only NAIA runner to compete in the men's 60-meter dash at Iowa State Open. The race features a total of 34 runners, which included 29 runners from NCAA Division I schools and 4 unattached runners. The men's 60-meter dash prelims take place on Friday at 12:20 p.m. where Boomsma will run in the third heat on lane 7. The top eight runners will advance to the finals on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. It will be Boomsma's second NCAA Division I meet that he had competed this season (ran in the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Feb. 7, hosted by the University of Nebraska at Lincoln).
ELY EARNS NSAA MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE-OF-THE-WEEK: Zach Ely was selected to the fourth edition of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Men's Indoor Track Athlete-of-the-Week. He continued to record his personal best time in the men's 60-meter hurdles. Ely clocked a time of 8.59 seconds to finish second in the men's 60-meter hurdles prelims at the Dakota Realty Alumni Track & Field Meet in Vermillion, S.D. on Feb. 8. He improved his time to 8.54 seconds, a new personal best time, the men's 60-meter hurdles finals and finished second. Ely was the top NAIA place-finisher in the event.
GIMBEL BREAKS DSU SCHOOL RECORD: Ryan Gimbel broke a new DSU school record in the men's weight throw at the Dakota Realty Alumni Track & Field at USD DakotaDome on Feb. 8. He threw a new record measurement of 51 feet and 9 inches to finish fifth in the event. Gimbel also place fifth in the men's shot put with a measurement of 46 feet and 6.75 inches.
TROJANS HAD STELLAR MEET AT USD DAKOTADOME: The Trojans placed 11 individuals – including an individual champion and a runner-up honor – in the 'Top 10' at the Dakota Realty Alumni Track & Field, hosted by NCAA Division I University of South Dakota on Feb. 8. Seth Boomsma won the men's 60-meter dash prelims and finals. Zach Ely was second in the men's 60-meter hurdles, while his teammates David Sotir was sixth (8.94 seconds) and Edward Clark placed seventh (8.96 seconds).. Mark Moeller placed fourth in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 51.25 seconds. Ryan Gimbel was fifth in both men's weight throw and shot put. Michael Hoffman ran a time of 9:09.97 to finish seventh in the men's 3000-meter run. Heather Dearing placed eighth in the women's high jump and her teammate Elizabeth Atkins placed 10th. Kayla Sveen clocked a time of 1:04.73 to finish 10th in the women's 400-meter dash. Ashley Currey was 10th in the women's weight throw with a measurement of 45 feet and 9.25 inches.

COACHES' CORNER: Dakota State University track and field head coach Buzz Stevenson has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for more than 45 years. While at DSU, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains regional cross-country coach of the year awards. He has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his third year as an assistant coach in track and field. Alex Glover enters his first season with the DSU track & field program as the throwing coach. Cody Foreman is also an assistant track and field coach for the Trojans.
UP NEXT: Dakota State closes out the indoor track & field regular-season meet on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Buena Vista Relay. The meet takes place in Storm Lake, Iowa. This will be the last regular-season indoor track & field meet for the athletes' chances to qualify for the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships.
