SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) had three individual champions at the Dordt (Iowa) Invitational indoor track and field meet at the Dordt Recreation Center Saturday. Two DSU throwers earned first place in the weight throw and one runner captured the individual title in the middle distance event.
Ashley Currey broke a new DSU school record in the women's weight throw as she captured the individual title. She improved the new DSU school record to 48 feet and 4.5 inches (the previous old record was 46 feet and 7.25 inches set at the Wildcat Open on Jan. 25 by Currey). Shayna Dwyer was sixth with a measurement of 43 feet and 7 inches. Kelci Viesselman placed 10th (41 feet and .25 inches) and Clara Schild was 22nd (31 feet and 3 inches).
Schild was fourth in the women's shot put with a measurement of 38 feet and 3.5 inches. Currey earned ninth-place finish (36 feet and .25 inches). Dwyer was 15th (32 feet and 11.75 inches) and Viesselman finished 22nd (30 feet and 11.25 inches).
Gimbel placed third in the men's shot put. He threw a measurement of 45 feet and 9.75 inches.
Mark Moeller ran a time of one minute and 23.72 seconds to claim the men's 600-meter run for the Trojans. His time is a new personal record.
DSU had two runners in the men's 55-meter dash finals. Spencer Carlson (recorded a time of 6.63 seconds in the prelims) clocked a time of 6.62 seconds to earn a third-place finish. D'Artist Williams (ran a time of 6.62 seconds in the prelims) placed fourth in 6.64 seconds. Marty Hargrove was seventh in the prelims with a time of 6.70 seconds. Trevor Jacobsen placed 19th (6.90 seconds) in the prelims.
In the men's 55-meter hurdles prelims, Zach Ely clocked a time of 8.07 seconds to finish second. Edward Clark was fourth with a time of 8.23 seconds. Both Ely and Clark advanced to the finals. David Sotir was seventh in 8.40 seconds.
Ely placed third in the men's 55-meter hurdles finals with a time of 7.97 seconds. Clark finish fourth in 8.24 seconds.
Jacobsen finished 14th in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 23.55 seconds. Sotir was 22nd (23.99 seconds), followed by Hargrove at 23rd-place (24.01 seconds).
Michael Hoffman set a new personal best time in the men's 3000-meter run. He clocked a time of 8:50.22 to finish fourth.
Victoria Sopko ran a time of 1:47.02 to finish fourth in the women's 600-meter run.
Jared Sutton recorded a time of 2:50.92 to place ninth in the men's 1000-meter run.
In the men's 1000-meter run, Steve Selchert ran a time of 1:59.62 to finish 10th.
Kayla Sveen clocked a time of 2:33.90 to place 12th in the women's 800-meter run.
Mitch Trestrail placed 15th in the men's 400-meter dash in 54.72 seconds.
Sara Friesen finished 16th in the women's 55-meter dash with a time of 8.07 seconds. She clocked a time of 29.90 seconds to finish 18th in the women's 200-meter dash.
The DSU men's 4 x 400-meter relay team – Moeller, Selchert, Tejada and Truman – ran a time of 3:34.75 to earn eighth place finish. The other Trojan 4 x 400-meter relay team – Trestrail, Clark, Hauge and Hoffman – was 13th in 3:43.00.
Dakota State concludes their indoor track & field schedule next Saturday, Feb. 22. The Trojans will have their last chance to qualify for NAIA Indoor Track & Field Nationals as they compete in the Buena Vista Relays. The meet will be held in Storm Lake, Iowa.
