GOODWELL, Okla. – The Dakota State University baseball team kicked off their 2014 campaign at the Aggie Baseball Field, visiting NCAA Division II Oklahoma Panhandle State Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader. The Trojans fell short 1-0 in the first game and 6-5 in 10 innings in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Trojans dropped their overall record to 0-2. The Aggies lifted their record to 2-7.
Game 1 – Oklahoma Panhandle State 1, Dakota State (S.D.) 0
OPS Sam Beattie (1-1) tossed a complete game and struck out 10 Trojan batters to kick off the three-game series with a 1-0 victory.
The Aggies recorded their only run of the game in the bottom fourth inning. Peyton Osborn opened the inning with a single. Nicholas Zieniuk recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Osborn to second base. Osborn advanced to third base after Jordan Berdal hit a ground out to first base. With two outs, Ruben Aguirre hit an RBI single to score Osborn for a 1-0 lead.
Joe Davis had a single for the Trojans.
Aguirre recorded a single and an RBI for the Aggies. Osborn added a single.
Jordan Sovich (0-1) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for DSU. He pitched five innings and allowed one run on two hits. Sovich struck out four OPS batters. Mike Chariter pitched a shutout sixth inning.
DSU left three runners on base. Oklahoma Panhandle State had two runners left on base.
Game 2 – Oklahoma Panhandle State 6, Dakota State (S.D.) 5 (10 innings)
The Aggies rallied back twice in the last two innings of the game to defeat Dakota State 6-5 in 10 innings. The second game of the doubleheader was scheduled for a nine-inning game.
The Trojans earned their first lead of the game in the top third inning. Nick Serrata opened the inning by reaching on base by OPS's defensive error. He advanced to second base after Ryan Schlesser hit a ground out to shortstop. After Davis recorded a walk with two outs, Jordan Entrikin hit an RBI single to score Serrata to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
Dylan Dudley hit an RBI double in the bottom fourth frame to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams were unable to score until the ninth inning.
Dakota State broke the tie game in the top of the ninth inning with two runs scored. JD Farley reached on base caused by OPS's defensive miscue with one out. Andy Lee hit a single and advanced Farley to second base. Serreta made on base caused by Aggies' defensive error, allowing Farley to score as DSU regained their lead to 2-1. The Trojans extended their lead to 3-1 after Danny Flahie hit an RBI single to score Lee.
DSU left three runners on base when the top ninth inning ended.
The Aggies rallied back to tie the game in the bottom ninth inning with two runs scored, extending the game into extra innings. Aguirre started the inning with a double for OPS. He advanced to third base by DSU's wild pitch. Nick Crosswhite added another double for the Aggies and scored Aguirre to cut Trojans' lead to 3-2.
After Robert Montoya hit a ground out to advance Crosswhite to third base (two outs), Dakota State committed another wild pitch to score Crosswhite and tied the game at 3-3.
DSU scored twice in the top 10th inning to grab a 5-3 lead. Entrikin opened the extra inning by reaching first base with a single. Drew Sweeter was reached safely by fielder's choice as Entrikin was reached to second base caused by Aggies' error. With one out, Lee hit an RBI single to score Entrikin to earn the lead for the third time at 4-3.
Serrata added an RBI single to score Sweeter as DSU's lead grew to 5-3.
Osborn was hit-by-pitch with one out in the bottom 10th inning. He advanced to second base by DSU's balk. Bernal recorded an RBI single to advance Osborn to third base.
A second balk by DSU in the bottom 10th inning allowed Osborn to score as OPS reduced Trojans' lead to 6-4. Pinch-hitter Zieniuk reached on base by a walk. Aguirre hit a game-winning 2-RBI double to score Bernal and Zieniuk.
Flahie and Serrata each had an RBI for Dakota State. Entrikin, Sweeter, Farley and Serrata each scored a run.
Aguirre had three doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs for Oklahoma Panhandle State. Crosswhite and Dudley each added a double.
The Trojans outhit the Aggies 12-9 in the game. OPS committed four defensive errors.
Dakota State left 10 runners on base compared to Aggies' 6 runners left on base.
Mitch Bouchard started the game for DSU. He tossed five innings and gave up a run on four hits. Austin Weber pitched three innings in relief, yielding OPS to one hit. Bryant Westra worked the ninth inning and allowed two runs on two hits. Seth Spears pitched 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on one hit. Seth Rockafellow (0-1) recorded the loss as he allowed a run on one hit.
Spencer Long worked for the first five innings for Oklahoma Panhandle State. He allowed a run on three hits. Adam Burke tossed four innings in relief. He gave up two runs (one unearned run) on seven hits. Walter Rainwater (1-1) picked up the victory as he pitched the 10th inning, giving up two runs on two hits.
Dakota State and Oklahoma Panhandle State conclude their three-game series Monday morning with a single game. First pitch from the Aggie Baseball Field is set for 11 a.m.
