THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University baseball team (0-3 overall record) is searching for their first wins of the 2014 campaign on Friday and Saturday as they visit Central Christian (Kan.) (4-5) in a four-game series. The doubleheader kicks off on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. Both teams will play in another doubleheader on Saturday with the first game starting at 12 p.m. The four-game baseball series will take place at the Moundridge High School in McPherson, Kan.
ABOUT CENTRAL CHRISTIAN (KAN.): Central Christian (Kan.) is a member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference located in McPherson, Kan. The Tigers are coached by Justin Cunningham, who is entering his second season this year. Central Christian opened their 2014 season with a split versus Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas), winning the season opener game 7-5 and losing in the second game by the score of 4-2. The Tigers had lost four straight games, including a three-game series sweep against No. 11 Oklahoma Baptist. Central Christian lost to Kansas Wesleyan in a nine-inning game by the score of 15-1 on Feb. 18, ending the game due to mercy rule in seven innings.
TROJANS FALL SHORT IN SEASON OPENER: Dakota State opened their 2014 season in Goodwell, Okla. on Feb. 16 and Feb. 17 for a three-game series with Oklahoma Panhandle State. The Trojans fell short in each of the three games by one run. The Aggies swept DSU in a three-game series by the scores of 1-0, 6-5 in 10 innings and 7-6. Dakota State outhit Oklahoma Panhandle State 28-19 in the three-game series. The Trojans had a batting average of .272 compared to the Aggies .221 batting average.
WEATHER FORECAST: According to the weather.com website, the weather forecast in McPherson, Kan. is predicting dry conditions. On Friday, the weather calls for sunny skies with a high temperature of 62 degrees. Mostly sunny skies with a high temperature of 56 degrees are the weather forecast for Saturday.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State won the last meeting with Central Christian on March 6, 2012. The Trojans scored a combined 11 runs in the final two innings to defeat the Tigers 16-1. DSU outhit CCC 11-5 in the game. DSU recorded seven stolen bases compared to the Tigers' two stolen bases.
UPCOMING TUCSON INVITATIONAL: The Trojans will be playing a total of eight games in the Tucson Invitational from March 9 through March 14. DSU is scheduled to play Kansas Wesleyan, Dordt (Iowa), Briar Cliff (Iowa), Missouri Valley, Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and University of Winnipeg (Canada). The Trojans are slated to play doubleheaders versus Olivet Nazarene and University of Winnipeg in Tucson, Ariz.
QUICK LEADERS: Joe Davis and Ryan Schlesser each lead the Trojans with .417 batting average and recorded five hits. JD Farley and Danny Flahie each lead Dakota State with two runs batted in (RBIs). Ross Kortan have a stolen base for the Trojans. Austin Weber, Zac Smith and Mike Chartier each have an earned run average of 0.00. Jordan Sovich leads the team in strikeout per nine innings with an average of 7.2 strikeouts (4 total strikeouts).
FOUR TROJANS LEAD NATION IN FIELDING PERCENTAGE: According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Thursday, four DSU basketball players lead the nation in fielding percentage. JD Farley, Danny Flahie, Ryan Schlesser and Jordan Entrikin each record a fielding percentage of 1.000.
STRONG PITCHING & DEFENSE: Dakota State ranks 20th in the nation in assists per game with an average of 11.3 assists per game. The Trojans are 22nd in the nation in chances per game with an average of 37.0 chances. DSU had held their opponents' batting average to .221, which is 28th best in the nation. Both Austin Weber and Zac Smith lead the nation in total runs earned allowed with zero earned runs. Jordan Sovich tops in the nation in walks allowed (0). Smith and Sovich are 15th in the nation in hits allowed with 2 hits.
HITTING STREAK: Joe Davis is currently on a three game hitting streak as he recorded at least a hit in the first three games of the season for the Trojans. DSU have five batters who are on a two-game hitting streak. They are Danny Flahie, Andy Lee, JD Farley, Ryan Schlesser and Jordan Entrikin.
DSU ON THE ROAD: Dakota State starts their 2014 season with 11 games on the road, including trips to Oklahoma Panhandle State, Central Christian (Kan.) and Peru State (Neb.). The Trojans head to Tucson, Ariz. for eight games from March 9 through March 14. DSU's season home opener at the Flynn Field is scheduled for Thursday, March 20 versus long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in a nine-inning game.
