McPHERSON, Kan. – Dakota State (S.D.) could not overcome a big sixth inning by Central Christian (Kan.) Friday afternoon in the first game of the baseball doubleheader at the Moundridge Baseball Field. The Tigers won the first game by the score of 8-4. The Trojans bounced back in the second game after trailing 2-0. DSU scored a total of six runs from fourth through sixth inning to earn a 6-3 victory over CC.
Dakota State recorded their first victory of the season and improved their overall record to 1-4. Central Christian, a member of Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, stands at 5-6 overall record after the second game loss.
Game 1 – Central Christian (Kan.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 4
After a scoreless first inning, the Tigers scored twice in the bottom second frame to earn the first lead of the game. Tyler Gniadek hit a single to open the inning, followed by Lee Stoop's double (advancing Gniadek to third base). Gniadek scored caused by DSU's defensive error to give Tigers a 1-0 lead. Martin Guevara added an RBI sacrifice fly to extend CC's lead to 2-0.
Dakota State scored their first run of the game in the top fifth. Nathan Wieneke was hit-by-pitch with one out. Danny Flahie hit a double and advanced Wieneke to third base. Ryan Schlesser recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Wieneke to trim Central Christian's lead to 2-1.
The Tigers exploded for six runs in the bottom sixth inning to expand their lead to 8-1. Central Christian had three hits in the inning, including a pair of doubles from Guevara and Gniadek.
DSU attempted to make a rally in the top seventh frame, but fell short. Andy Lee, pinch hitter for Jake Ferdinand, opened the inning with a double. Nick Serrata reached to second base after CC committed a defensive error (advanced Lee to third base). After Wieneke reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU, Flahie recorded an RBI single to score Lee to reduce their deficit to 8-2.
Schlesser added an RBI ground out and Joe Davis hit an RBI single for the Trojans in the seventh inning. The Tigers secured the victory as DSU left one runner on base.
Flahie was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, a single and recorded an RBI for Dakota State. Schlesser added two hits and an RBI. Davis had a single and an RBI. Wieneke scored twice. Lee had a double.
Lee Stoop had a double, two singles and two RBIs for the Tigers. Gniadek and Guevara each had a double, a single and two RBIs.
Central Christian outhit the Trojans 10-6 in the game.
CC left eight runners on base compared to DSU six runners left on base.
Jordan Sovich (0-2) recorded the loss for the Trojans. He tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed four runs (two unearned) on seven hits. Sovich recorded two strikeouts. Drew Sweeter came in the sixth inning and gave up two runs on one hit. Mitch Bouchard pitched the final two outs of the sixth inning. He allowed two runs on two hits.
Robert Hawkins (2-1) pitched a complete game victory for Central Christian. He gave up two runs (one unearned) on six hits. Hawkins struck out six DSU batters.
Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 6, Central Christian (Kan.) 3
The Tigers got on board first in the opening inning. Clayton Lacher reached on base by a walk and Zane Howard hit a single to advance Lacher to second base. Drew Schiesser hit an RBI single to score Lacher for a 1-0 lead in favor of Central Christian.
CC added another run in the bottom third frame to extend their lead to 2-0. Lacher opened with a walk and advanced to second base by a passed ball. Schiesser added another RBI single to score Lacher to give the Tigers a two-run lead.
Dakota State answered by scoring three runs in the top fourth inning to earn their first lead of the game. David Halstead and Jordan Entrikin hit back-to-back singles to open the inning. Lee advanced on base caused by Tigers' defensive miscue and set up a bases loaded situation for DSU.
Jake Ferdinand was hit-by-pitch and scored Halstead for the first run of the game for the Trojans. JD Farley added a 2-RBI single to score Ross Kortan (courtesy runner for Entrikin) and Lee as Dakota State earned a 3-2 lead.
Halstead hit a single to begin the top fifth frame for DSU. Entrikin added a double to advance Halstead to third base. Lee recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Halstead as DSU's lead grew to 4-2.
Schiesser recorded his third RBI single in the bottom fifth inning to reduce CC's deficit to 4-3.
Dakota State scored twice in the top sixth inning. Wieneke kicked off the inning with a single. He advanced to second base after Flahie recorded a sacrifice bunt. Schlesser recorded an RBI ground out to score Wieneke (Wieneke advanced to third base after a balk committed by the Tigers) to extend DSU's lead to 5-3.
Trojan Davis hit a single with two outs in the top sixth inning and advanced to second base caused by CC's defensive error on the same play. Halstead recorded an RBI triple to score Davis to give Dakota State 6-3 lead.
The Trojans secured the game as the Tigers left two runners in the bottom seventh inning.
Halstead was 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple, two singles and an RBI for Dakota State. Flahie added a double. Entrikin and Lee each had two singles and an RBI. Farley had a single, 2 RBIs and recorded two walks. Schlesser had three walks and recorded an RBI. Davis and Wieneke each had a single and a run scored.
Lee had a stolen base for the Trojans.
Schiesser was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three singles and 3 RBIs for Central Christian. Howard and Nicholas Campos each added a hit. Masaski Yamashita recorded two singles.
Both teams left 10 runners on base and recorded two double plays in the game.
Austin Weber (1-0) picked up the victory for the Trojans. He tossed a complete game and allowed three runs (one unearned) on seven hits. Weber struck out four CC's batters.
Braxton Lorenzini (1-1) recorded the loss for Central Christian. He pitched five innings and allowed four runs (one unearned) on seven hits. Alan Barker tossed one inning in relief and gave up two runs on four hits. Michael Frick pitched scoreless seventh inning in relief.
Dakota State continues their four-game series with another doubleheader with Central Christian Saturday afternoon. First pitch in the first game of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m. The doubleheader will be played at the Light Capital Stadium in McPherson, Kan.
