McPHERSON, Kan. – The Dakota State University baseball team earned a doubleheader split for the second straight day versus Central Christian (Kan.). The Trojans used an eight-run fourth inning explosion to earn a 9-2 first game victory Saturday afternoon at the Light Capital Stadium. The Tigers took the final game of the four-game series by shutting down DSU 8-0, earning a split in the series.
Dakota State's overall record stands at 2-5 overall record. Central Christian, a member of Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, is 6-7 overall record.
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 9, Central Christian (Kan.) 2
CC scored twice in the bottom second inning – all runs by two outs. The Tigers scored their first run of the game caused by DSU's defensive error and Masaski Yamashita hit an RBI single to earn a 2-0 lead.
The Trojans exploded for eight runs in the top fourth innings, where DSU had recorded seven hits in the inning. Ryan Schlesser was hit-by-pitch to open the inning. Joe Davis hit a single and advanced Ross Kortan (courtesy runner for Schlesser). David Halstead hit an RBI single to score Kortan as the Trojans trimmed CC's lead to 2-1.
Jordan Entrikin recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Davis to third base and Halstead to second base for the Trojans. After Andy Lee was reached on base by an intentional walk, Nick Serrata hit an RBI single to score Davis as Dakota State tied the game at 2-2 in the top fourth inning.
The Trojans continued their scoring outburst in the fourth inning as CC's Andrew Hightower threw a wild pitch to allow Halstead as DSU earned their first lead of the game at 3-2.
JD Farley hit a single and Lee scored caused by CC's defensive miscue as the Trojans extended their lead to 4-2. Nathan Wieneke added an RBI ground out to score Serrata to make it 5-2 in favor of Dakota State.
Danny Flahie hit an RBI single to score Farley as DSU's lead grew to 6-2 in the top fourth inning. The Trojans added two more runs caused by Tigers' defensive error to give DSU an 8-2 lead.
Dakota State made it 9-2 in the top fifth inning after Wieneke hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Serrata (who opened with a single and advanced to second by CC's error and reached to third base by a passed ball committed by the Tigers).
The Trojans secured the victory in the bottom seventh inning as Central Christian left two runners on base.
Serrata went 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles, two runs scored and recorded an RBI for DSU. Farley added two singles. Schlesser had a double. Flahie and Halstead each recorded a single and an RBI. Davis, Entrikin and Lee each had a hit.
Yamashita recorded two singles for Central Christian. Clayton Lacher and Lee Stoop each had a double. Alex Rodriguez had a single.
The Trojans outhit the Tigers 11-5 in the game.
DSU left five runners on base compared to Central Christian four runners left on base.
Dakota State's defense made two double plays in the game.
Zac Smith (1-0) picked up the victory for the Trojans. He started the game and tossed six innings. Smith allowed two unearned runs on three hits. Taylor Boerger pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief. He gave up two hits.
Hightower (0-3) recorded the loss for Central Christian. He worked for 3 2/3 innings and allowed eight runs (three unearned) on seven hits. Thomas Kopp faced three batters in relief. Sean Day came in for 1 1/3 innings and allowed one run on one hit. Nicholas Campos pitched one scoreless inning in relief. Calvin Lockerby tossed the seventh inning and gave up one hit.
Game 2 – Central Christian (Kan.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 0
DSU was unable to score in the second game of the doubleheader. The Tigers scored a combined seven runs in the third and fourth innings to defeat the Trojans.
CC scored first in the bottom second inning for a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers scored four times in the bottom fourth frame to extend their lead to 5-0. Central Christian added three runs in the fifth inning to make it 8-0.
Davis, Lee, Farley and Wieneke each had a single for the Trojans.
Stoop had a double, single and recorded two RBIs for the Tigers. Yamashita added a double and a single. Drew Schiesser, Martin Guevara and Christian Herbig each had a hit.
Central Christian had nine hits in the game compared to DSU four hits.
Robert Roman (0-1) took the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State. He worked the first 3 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. Mike Chartier pitched 2/3 innings in relief and gave up three runs on one hit. Jamie Jorgensen tossed two scoreless innings and limited the Tigers to one hit.
Doug Gove tossed a complete game victory for the Tigers. He gave up four hits and recorded five strikeouts.
Dakota State continues their action on the road next weekend. The Trojans head to Peru, Neb. to play a four-game series versus Peru State (Neb.). The doubleheader kicks off on next Saturday (March 1).
