THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University baseball team (2-5 overall record) returns back to action Sunday to kick off their nine-game stretch at the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational. The Trojans face off Kansas Wesleyan in a nine-inning game, with the first pitch slated for 11 a.m. (Central Standard Time)/9 a.m. (Pacific Standard Time).
TUCSON (ARIZ.) INVITATIONAL: Dakota State plays a total of nine games in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational from March 9 through March 14. The games will be held at the Kino Sports Complex, which is the former home of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Chicago White Sox (total of 10 fields in the sports complex). The Trojans will play a total of seven different opponents during their stay in Tucson. DSU will face Kansas Wesleyan, Dordt (Iowa), Briar Cliff (Iowa), Missouri Valley, Concordia (Neb.), Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and University of Winnipeg (Canada). DSU will play a doubleheader versus Olivet Nazarene on March 13 and University of Winnipeg on March 14.
TROJANS EARN FIRST WINS OF THE SEASON: The Trojans snapped their four-game losing streak with a pair of victories at Central Christian (Kan.) on Feb. 21 and Feb. 22. DSU split their four-game series with the Tigers, losing 8-4 in the first game of the doubleheader on Feb. 21 and bounced back with a 6-3 victory in the second game. Dakota State won their second straight game by exploding for eight runs in 9-2 game one victory on Feb. 22, but dropped the final game of the four-game series by the score of 8-0.
WEATHER FORECAST: According to the weather.com website as of Friday, the weather forecast for Tucson, Ariz. calls for dry conditions from March 9 through March 14. The forecast high temperatures are expected to be in the 70's and 50's for the lows forecast temperatures.
HITTING STREAK: Joe Davis had at least a hit in every game this season for the Trojans. He recorded three hits in a game versus Oklahoma Panhandle State, including a double. Davis hit at least a single in each of the seven DSU's games this year. Andy Lee is currently on a six-game hitting streak. He had two multi-hits games during his six-game hitting streak—3 hits versus Oklahoma Panhandle State on Feb. 16 and two hits versus Central Christian (Kan.). JD Farley is on his three-game hitting streak.
TROJANS IN THE RANKS: According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Friday, Dakota State ranks seventh in the nation in assists per game (11.6). The Trojans are 43rd in the nation in chances per game (35.1).
NATION LEADER IN FIELDING PERCENTAGE: Three Dakota State baseball players lead the nation in fielding percentage of 1.000. They are Danny Flahie, Ryan Schlesser and Jordan Entrikin. Those three DSU players combined for a total of 53 put-outs, 4 assists and 0 errors defensively (22 put-outs by Entrikin, 19 put-outs by Schlesser and 12 put-outs by Flahie).
SMITH LEADS NATION IN PITCHING: Zac Smith of Dakota State ranks first in the nation in two different categories. He leads the nation in total earned runs allowed (0 earned runs) and earned runs average (0.00). He is 12th in the nation in opponents' batting average of .128 and 16th in hits allowed per game per nine innings (4.09). Smith is 29th in the nation in total hits allowed (29th) and 31st in walked allowed per nine innings (3.9).
TROJANS' PITCHERS: DSU starting's pitchers Austin Weber and Jordan Sovich each lead the team with six strikeouts. Weber ranks 49th in total earned runs allowed (2) and 50th in total runs allowed (3). He recorded an earned runs average of 1.80. Sovich had an ERA of 2.61 for the Trojans this season.
QUICK LEADERS: Andy Lee and Joe Davis each had nine hits to lead Trojans' offense attack. Lee leads the team in batting average of .500 and one stole base. JD Farley records four runs batted in (RBIs), averaging 0.6 RBIs per game. Zac Smith leads the Trojans' pitching with an earned runs average of 0.00. He pitched 11 innings this season and allowed four unearned runs. Smith limited the opponents' batting average of .128 and limited the opponents to five hits. Austin Weber records six strikeouts this season and averages 5.4 strikeouts per nine inning.
