MAYVILLE, N.D. - The Dakota State University baseball team traveled to the Veterans Memorial Stadium for the DAC Baseball Postseason winner's bracket Sunday. The Trojans and Mayville State are the only undefeated teams in the tournament entering Sunday. DSU's rally fell short in the final innings and lost to the Comets 10-7.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 24-19. The Trojans will be one of the three remaining teams on Monday. Mayville State advanced to the DAC Championship game on Monday and raised their record to 28-21.
Mayville State exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jake McLain hit an RBI double to score Mark Kuzyk for the first run of the game. Derek Howerton, Spencer Braun, Dan Silva and Joe McLain each hit an RBI single.
Derek Grundmann opened the top of the second inning with a walk for Dakota State. Chaz Palmer, courtesy runner for Grundmann, advanced to second base by a passed by from Comet's catcher Braun. Donald Strand hit an RBI single to score Palmer to trim the Comets' lead to 5-1.
Braun hit an RBI double to score Howerton to extend Mayville State's lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
Howerton hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Comets' 7-1 lead.
Bob Olson reached on base with a single in the top of the fifth inning. Ryan Steffensen hit a two-run homer run to cut the deficit to 7-3.
The Comets added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 10-3.
Hunt and Josh Tiede each recorded a walk in the top of the seventh inning. Chance Hargrove hit an RBI single to score Hunt to trim the Comets' lead to 10-4.
With bases loaded and no out situation for the Trojans in the top of the eighth inning, Hunt hit a sacrifice fly to score Strand and Tiede added an RBI single to score Bob Olson to trim Mayville State's lead to 10-6.
Hargrove opened with a double to deep left field to open the top of the ninth inning. Zane Roduner hit a fly out and advanced Hargrove to third base. Pinch hitter Max Garza recorded an RBI to score Hargrove as the Trojans came in within 10-7, but the Trojans' rally fell short.
Hargrove went 2-for-4 with a double, a single, a run scored and an RBI for Dakota State. Ryan Steffensen went 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two walks. Tiede, Roduner, Strand and Olson each had a single.
DSU recorded 11 walks in the game and left 11 runners on bases.
The Trojans had five stolen bases in the game - two by Strand, Hunt, Tiede and Steffensen.
For Mayville State, Howerton went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, a single, three runs scored and two RBIs. Zach Schaefer added three hits.
Jerod Burleson (3-4) suffered the loss for the Trojans. He pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. Josh Caven came in for 2 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on three hits. Samuel Lopez pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief and allowed two runs on one hit. Brandon Womack closed the game in two innings and gave up two hits.
Nick Bata (4-3) recorded the victory for Mayville State. He pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on five hits. He walked nine and struck out six batters. Schaefer tossed 2 1/3 innings in relief and allowed three runs (one unearned) on two hits.
Dakota State will play at 12 noon Monday in Jamestown for another chance to get in the DAC Championship game.
