TUCSON, Ariz. – Dakota State (S.D.), which played on their third straight day in the Tucson (Ariz.) Baseball Invitational Tuesday, snapped their four-game losing skid in the first game at the Kino Sports Complex. The Trojans defeated Missouri Valley by the score of 5-1. DSU falls short in the second game, losing to Concordia (Neb.). The game was knotted at 4-4, but the Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom fifth inning to defeat the Trojans 8-4.
Dakota State's overall record stands at 3-9. Missouri Valley is 1-10 record after the defeat to DSU. Concordia is 5-12 record.
Dakota State (S.D.) 5, Missouri Valley 1 - FINAL
The Trojans jumped to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning. Nick Serrata and Joe Davis recorded back-to-back walks with one out. David Halstead hit an RBI single to score Serrata to give DSU a one-run lead.
Dakota State extended their lead in the top second frame. Seth Spears was hit-by-pitch to start the inning. He advanced to second base after Ryan Schlesser's sacrifice bunt. Spears scored from JD Farley's RBI double to give DSU a 2-0 lead.
The Vikings ended their scoring drought in the bottom fourth inning after Jake Stafford's RBI double (2-1 DSU lead).
Back-to-back doubles with one out by Serrata and Davis help Trojans expand their lead to 3-1 in the top fifth inning.
Dakota State added two runs in the sixth inning. Spears was hit-by-pitch and advanced to second after a ground out by Schlesser. Spears scored caused by MV's wild pitch to extend DSU's lead to 4-1. Farley recorded a single and advanced to second after Serrata's single. Davis hit an RBI single to score Farley as DSU's lead grew to 5-1.
The Trojans prevented the Vikings to score in the final inning, leaving two runners on base for MV.
Davis and Serrata each had a double and a single for the Trojans. Farley and Halstead each added a double and an RBI. Spears had a hit. Davis produced two RBIs.
Zac Blakemore was 2-for-2 at the plate for Missouri Valley. Stafford added a double and an RBI. Roberto Carmona and Tim Roddy each had a hit.
Drew Sweeter (1-0) tossed a complete game victory for Dakota State. He allowed one unearned run on five hits.
Dominique Smith (0-1) recorded the loss for Missouri Valley. He worked for 5 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on six hits. He recorded six strikeouts. Branden Evans pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief, limiting DSU to two hits.
DSU outhit MV 8-5 in the game. The Trojans left eight runners on base compared to the Vikings' five runnrs left on base.
Concordia (Neb.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 - FINAL
Concordia scored seven runs after DSU held a 4-1 lead in the third inning to secure the victory.
DSU grabbed its first lead of the game after scoring twice in the opening inning, thanks to a pair of doubles by Davis and Halstead. Danny Flahie started the game with a single. He advanced to second base after Serrata's sacrifice bunt. Davis and Halstead recorded back-to-back RBI doubles to put the Trojans up 2-0.
The Bulldogs cut DSU's lead to 2-1 after Sean McCartney's RBI single.
The Trojans led off the third inning with three straight hits. Flahie started with a triple, followed by Serrata's RBI single to score Flahie for a 3-1 lead. Davis added a single to advance Serrata to third base. DSU made it 4-1 after Halstead recorded an RBI single to score Serrata.
CUNE cut DSU's to 4-2 after Andrew Yerrell recorded an RBI triple. The Bulldogs added a run caused by DSU's defensive error and Taylor Dudley's RBI single to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom third inning.
Concordia exploded for four runs in the bottom fifth frame. The Bulldogs had five hits, while DSU committed an error to allow CUNE earn an 8-4 lead.
DSU was unable to convert their scoring opportunities in the top seventh inning. The Trojans left three runners on base as the Bulldogs sealed the victory.
Davis and Halstead each were perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 for the Trojans. Davis smashed three doubles, a single and recorded an RBI. Halstead had a double, three singles and produced two RBIs. Flahie had a triple and a single. He scored twice in the game. Serrata had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Farley recorded a single.
Dudley was 3-for-3 at the plate for the Bulldogs. He had a double, two singles and recorded two RBIs. A.J. Peterson added two hits and two RBIs. Wilkerson had a double, a single and scored twice. Alex Cargin, Yerrell, Camaren Gause and Zach Cambier each had a hit.
Seth Rockafellow (0-2) recorded the loss for DSU. He pitched four-plus innings and gave up five runs (two unearned) on six hits. Rockafellow struck out five CUNE's batters. Spears worked the fifth inning and allowed three runs (one unearned) on four hits. Bryant Westra tossed a scoreless sixth inning, limiting the Bulldogs to one hit.
Bryce Rone started the game for Concordia. He pitched the first three innings and gave up four runs on seven hits. Tim Fosmo (1-0) picked up the victory in relief as he pitched 3 2/3 innings. He gave up five hits. Schafer Thompson recorded the final out of the game as he earned his first save of the season.
DSU outhit the Bulldogs 12-11. CUNE had nine runners left on base, while the Trojans had eight runners left on base.
Dakota State will take the day off on Wednesday in the Tucson Invitational. The Trojans will swing back in action on Thursday as they play in a doubleheader versus Olivet Nazarene (Ill.). First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. in Tucson, Ariz.
