JAMESTOWN, N.D. - The Dakota State University baseball team competed in DAC Baseball Postseason tournament Saturday at the Jack Brown Stadium. The fourth-seeded Trojans faced the fifth-seeded Minot State in the opening round. The Trojans defeated the Beavers 13-3 in seven innings. DSU went on to upset the DAC's top-seed Jamestown College in the night cap, 9-2.
The DAC Baseball Postseason Tournament was originally scheduled to play in Dickinson, N.D. this weekend and was forced to move the sites to Jamestown and Mayville due to Mother Nature.
Dakota State is currently 24-18 overall on the season and remained undefeated in the DAC postseason tournament.
Opening Round: Dakota State 13, Minot State 3 (7 innings) - Box Score
Chad Hunt opened the bottom of the first inning with a walk for Dakota State. Brian White hit a 2-run home run, his seventh home run of the season, to give the Trojans' 2-0 early lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Trojans were hit-by-pitch three times to Jose Figueroa, Donald Strand and Hunt to load the bases with two outs. White hit a two-RBI single to score Chaz Palmer, courtesy runner for Figueroa, and Strand. Hunt added a run by a Beaver's defensive error to extend the Trojans' lead to 5-0.
Derek Grundmann hit a solo home run, his second homer this season, in the bottom of the third inning to give the Trojans 6-0 lead.
The Trojans exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 12-0. The Trojans recorded six hits, including two defensive errors from the Beavers to help the Trojans scored in two separate occasions.
Pinch hitter Ryan Bouricer hit an RBI single to score Palmer to give the Trojans 13-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Minot State broke up their scoring drought in the top of the seventh inning with three runs scored. With runners on third and second bases with one out, Trojan Lincoln Gassman retired the final two batters as Dakota State defeat the Beavers in ten-run mercy rule.
The Beavers left 12 runners on base. Dakota State had seven runners left on base.
White led the Trojans with a home run, two singles and four RBIs. Chance Hargrove, Grundmann, Figueroa and Roduner each had two hits. Palmer scored three times. Hunt, White and Strand each scored twice.
For Minot State, Eli Mihalick went 2-for-3 with a double, a single and an RBI. Michael Mesh, Kerry Boon, Scott Peters and Michael O'Dwyer each had a single.
Gassman (6-3) tossed a complete game win for the Trojans. He allowed three runs on eight hits. He struck out five batters.
Anthony Friesen (4-2) suffered the loss for Minot State. He pitched three innings and gave up six runs (one unearned) on four hits. Denver Wik came in relief for one inning. He allowed six runs (two unearned) on six hits. Clay Kallias closed the game in two innings. He gave up one run on three hits.
Winner's Bracket: Dakota State 9, Jamestown 2 - Box Score
For the second straight game, White hit a home run in his first at-bat in the top of the first inning to give the Trojans' 1-0 lead.
Jeremy Newman hit an RBI single to score Keith Woelber as Jamestown tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom first frame.
With bases loaded and one out situation for Dakota State in the top of the second inning, Hunt hit an RBI single to score Hargrove and White added a 2-RBI single to score Olson and Ryan Steffensen to extend the Trojans' lead to 4-1. Hunt scored on a balk from Jimmie pitcher's Paul Curtis for Trojans' 5-1 lead.
White hit his second home run of the game and scored Hunt to extend Dakota State's lead to 7-1 in the top of the fourth inning.
Olson hit an RBI double to score courtesy runner Strand to give the Trojans' 8-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning.
Griffin Sweazey hit an RBI single to score Nick Meehan as the Jimmies trimmed the Trojans' lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Tiede recorded an RBI base-on-balls with bases loaded and pinch runner Palmer scored to add a run to Trojans' lead to 9-2 in the top of the eighth inning.
With runners on second and first bases with one out for the Jimmies, the Trojans ended the game by a double play by Roduner and Olson.
White went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a single and recorded five RBIs for Dakota State. Olson added a double and two singles. Hunt, Garrett Gassman, Grundmann, Hargrove, and Steffensen each had a single.
For Jamestown, Sweazey went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kyle Montgomery added two singles. Donny MacQuarrie swiped two bases.
Jared Donahue (5-3) pitched a complete game victory for the Trojans. He allowed two runs on eight hits. He struck out nine batters and extended his DSU school-record to 97 strikeouts in a season.
Curtis (4-2) suffered the loss for the Jimmies. He pitched three innings and gave up five runs on seven hits. Marcus Hudson came in relief for 1 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on two hits. Ryan Picotte pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up one run on two hits. Ben Watkins pitched the final shutout inning.
Jamestown left 12 runners on bases. Dakota State had seven runners left on base.
Dakota State will travel to Mayville, N.D. Sunday to take on Mayville State in the winner's bracket. Mayville State, third seed, defeated sixth-seeded Valley City State 14-3 in seven innings and upset second-seeded Dickinson State 17-6. First pitch is slated at 1 p.m.
