MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Dakota State (S.D.) finished their week-long Snowbird Invitational at the Grand Park with a pair of losses to NCAA Division II Philadelphia (Pa.) Saturday morning. The Rams won by the scores of 13-0 in five innings and 5-1.
Dakota State's overall record stands at 7-5. It was the season opener for Philadelphia as they recorded an overall record of 2-0.
Game 1: Philadelphia (Pa.) 13, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL/5 innings
After a scoreless first inning, the Rams scored four runs in the top second inning for a 4-0 lead.
Philadelphia exploded for nine runs in the top third frame to expand their lead to 13-0, thanks to Sarah Gardner and Kasia Smith with back-to-back solo home runs.
Gardner and Smith each had a home run for the Rams. Elizabeth Ciccone recorded a triple and a single. Renee Kakareka, Meaghan Lewis, Samantha Riabko and Mollie Burrell each had a hit.
Hughes (2-2) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for DSU. She tossed two-plus innings and allowed six runs on five hits. Bretton Lien pitched 1/3 innings in relief, giving up six runs on four hits. Ellie Kristensen worked for 2 2/3 innings and allowed one hit.
Smith (1-0) picked up the victory as she pitched a complete game for the Rams. She limited DSU to three hits.
Game 2: Philadelphia (Pa.) 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL
Dakota State broke their scoring drought as they grabbed their first lead of the game in the opening inning. Erica Belter was hit-by-pitch to lead off the first inning. She swiped to second base. Katie Slibowski hit single to advance Belter to third base. Slibowski advanced to second base by a stolen base. Kelli Heiser reached on base caused by Rams' defensive miscue to score Belter, giving DSU a 1-0 lead.
Philadelphia ended their scoreless innings with two runs scored in the bottom fourth inning. After Lewis led off the inning with a double, Garnder hit a 2-run home run to earn a 2-1 lead.
The Rams added three runs in the bottom sixth frame to expand their lead. Riabko hit a solo home run to make it 3-1 in favor of PU. Ciccone added a 2-RBI single to extend Rams' lead to 5-1.
Dakota State could not score in the final inning as they left one runner on base, sealing the victory for the Rams.
Slibowski, Belter and Sandoval each swiped one base for DSU.
Riabko and Gardner each had a home run for Philadelphia. Lewis had a double and a single. Ciccone had a hit and recorded two RBIs. Samantha Abromavage, Smith and Burrell each had a hit.
Kristensen (1-2) recorded the loss for the Trojans. She tossed three innings and allowed two runs on four hits. She struck out three PU's batters. Slibowski worked for three innings in relief. She gave up three runs on four hits.
Abromavage (1-0) pitched a complete game victory for the Rams. She gave up one unearned run on seven hits.
PU outhit DSU 8-7 in the game. The Trojans left nine runners on base compared to the Rams' seven runners left on base.
Dakota State continues their action on the road on Tuesday afternoon. The Trojans are scheduled to visit Briar Cliff (Iowa) in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Sioux City, Iowa.
