SEWARD, Neb. – Dakota State (S.D.) erased a 4-0 deficit in the first game (seven-inning game), defeating Concordia (Neb.) by the score of 6-5 in college baseball action at Plum Creek Park. The Trojans added another victory by the score of 9-5 in the second game (nine-inning game) to complete a doubleheader sweep over the Bulldogs.
Dakota State, who won five games in the last seven games, improved their overall record to 8-12. The Trojans ended Concordia's six-game winning record and earned a 2-1 season series victory (lost to CUNE 8-4 in the Tucson, Ariz. Invitational on March 13). The Bulldogs, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, dipped their overall record to 10-14.
Game 1: Dakota State (S.D.) 6, Concordia (Neb.) 5 - FINAL
The Bulldogs jumped to a 3-0 quick lead in the opening inning after producing three consecutive singles to start the game (Alex Cargin, A.J. Peterson and Andrew Yerrell). Peterson, Daniel Wilkerson and Zach Cambier each recorded an RBI in the first inning.
Cargin added an RBI in the bottom second frame to extend CUNE's lead to 4-0.
The Trojans ended their two scoreless innings with a run scored in the top third. JD Farley led off the inning with a walk. Nathan Wieneke recorded a sacrifice to advance Farley to second base. Danny Flahie hit a single to advance Farley to third base. Joe Davis was hit-by-pitch with two outs to set up a bases loaded situation. David Halstead recorded an RBI base-on-balls to score DSU's first run of the game (CUNE leads 4-1).
Dakota State exploded for four runs in the top fifth inning to earn their first lead of the game. Wieneke started the inning with a double, followed by Flahie's single.
Nick Serrata reached on base by Bulldogs' defensive error, allowing Wieneke and Flahie to score in the top fourth. Davis added an RBI single to score Serrata as DSU knotted the game at 4-4. Andy Lee recorded an RBI to score Davis to give the Trojans a 5-4 lead.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom fifth inning caused by DSU's wild pitch (Cargin opened the inning with a single and recorded the run to tie the game).
DSU broke up the 5-5 tie into a 6-5 lead in the top seventh. Serrata led off the inning with a double. Halstead smashed an RBI double to score Serrata as the Trojans regained a one-run lead.
CUNE went three-and-out in the bottom seventh inning, sealing the victory for Dakota State.
Halstead went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, a single and produced two RBIs for the Trojans. Serrata and Wieneke each had a double. Flahie had two singles. Davis had a single. Flahie and Davis each recorded an RBI.
Camaren Gause had two hits for the Bulldogs. Cargin, Peterson and Cambier each had an RBI single. Yerrell and Tyler Nelson each added a hit.
Yerrell and Cargin each swiped two bases for Concordia. Gause added a stolen base.
Austin Weber (3-1) recorded the victory on the pitching mound for DSU. He tossed six innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. Bryant Westra picked up his second save of the season as he pitched a shutout seventh inning.
William Holbrook (3-2) was the losing pitcher for Concordia. He worked for 6 1/3 innings and allowed six runs (two unearned) on seven hits. Holbrook struck out seven DSU's batters. Heath Benker worked for the final two outs in the top seventh inning in relief.
Both teams had seven hits in the game. The Trojans left seven runners on base compared to CUNE three runners left on base.
Game 2: Dakota State (S.D.) 9, Concordia (Neb.) 5 - FINAL
CUNE grabbed the first lead of the game at 1-0 in the bottom third frame after Cargin's RBI single.
The Trojans answered back to tie the game in the top fourth inning. Andy Lee hit a single to lead off the inning. He advanced to second base after Ryan Schlesser recorded a sacrifice to third base. Seth Spears recorded an RBI double to score Lee to knot the game at 1-1.
DSU broke up the 1-1 tie for their first lead of the game in the top fifth. Davis smashed a double to left field with one out. Halstead reached on base by a walk. Schlesser hit an RBI single to score Davis for a 2-1 DSU lead.
Cambier recorded an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom fifth frame for the Bulldogs. CUNE added a run caused by DSU's defensive error to regain their lead at 3-2.
The Trojans scored four runs in the top sixth inning, despite only recording one hit in the inning while the Bulldogs committed three defensive errors. With a bases loaded and one out situation for DSU, Davis hit an RBI ground out to tie the game for the third time at 3-3. Lee added a 2-RBI single, followed by a run scored caused by CUNE's defensive error during the same play to make it 6-3 advantage for the Trojans.
Concordia scored twice in the bottom sixth to reduce DSU's lead to 6-5.
Spears led the top seventh inning with a triple for Dakota State. Farley and Wieneke recorded back-to-back walks to set up a bases loaded situation. Flahie reached on base by base-on-balls and scored Spears for a 7-5 DSU lead. Serrata added an RBI ground out to score Farley to make it 8-5 DSU. Davis hit an RBI single to score Wieneke as the Trojans' lead grew to 9-5.
The Bulldogs went three-and-out in the seventh and eighth innings. The Trojans' defense secured the game in the bottom ninth inning as CUNE left one runner on base.
Spears was 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, a triple and an RBI for Dakota State. Flahie, Davis and Serrata each had a double and a single. Lee had two singles and two RBIs. Schlesser had two hits. Davis produced two RBIs. Flahie, Serrata and Schlesser each had an RBI.
Cole Stuerke had three singles and swiped three bases in the game for Concordia. Yerrell, Cambier and Ryan Fesmire each had two singles. Cargin, Wilkerson and Taylor Dudley each recorded a hit. Cargin, Stuerke and Cambier each had an RBI.
Zac Smith (3-0) worked for five innings in victory for the Trojans. He allowed three runs (one unearned) on eight hits. Jordan Sovich recorded a save as he pitched four innings in relief. He gave up two runs (one unearned) on four hits.
Jordan Stirtz (2-4) recorded the loss for the Bulldogs. He tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed five runs (three unearned) on eight hits. Benker pitched the final two outs in the sixth inning and gave up an unearned run on one hit. Brody Yost pitched in the seventh inning as he walked three DSU batters, allowing the Trojans to score three times. Bryce Rone, Tim Fosmo and Schafer Thompson each pitched one inning and gave up a hit.
DSU outhit CUNE 13-12. The Trojans left 12 runners on base compared to the Bulldogs 10 runners left on base.
Dakota State is scheduled to play a nine-inning non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon. The Trojans visit their in-state rival Mount Marty in Yankton, S.D. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at the Riverside Park.
