SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Dakota State bounced back in the winning column Tuesday afternoon as they earned a non-conference baseball doubleheader sweep at the Bishop Mueller Field.  The Trojans pound out a season-high 21 hits and scored in every inning to earn a 13-5 victory over the Briar Cliff (Iowa).  DSU held on to win the second game by the score of 3-2 to complete a doubleheader sweep over the host-team Chargers.

Dakota State improved their overall record to 11-16.  Briar Cliff, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference foe, dropped their overall record to 11-17.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 13, Briar Cliff (Iowa) 5 – FINAL

Ian Barker started the game with a double for the Trojans.  He advanced to third base after BCU committed a pass ball.  Ryan Schlesser recorded an RBI ground out to score Barker to give DSU a 1-0 lead.

The Chargers knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom first frame caused by Trojans' defensive error.

Nick Serrata and Seth Spears hit back-to-back singles with one out in the top second for Dakota State.  Barker smashed a 3-run home run with two outs as the Trojans regained their lead to 4-1.

BCU added a run in the bottom second inning to cut DSU's lead to 4-2, thanks to a lead-off double by Jake Erichsen.

DSU scored a run in the top third inning from Briar Cliff's defensive miscue.  The Trojans' lead grew to 5-2.

Schlesser kicked off the fourth inning with a single for DSU.  David Halstead was hit-by-pitch to advance Danny Lopiparo – courtesy runner for Schlesser – to second base.  Lopiparo swiped to third base.  A wild pitch committed by the Chargers allowed Lopiparo to score, extending DSU's lead to 6-2.

Briar Cliff mounted a rally in the bottom fourth frame as they produced three runs on five hits.  Matt Fiechtner led off with a triple, followed by Erichsen's RBI single to reduce Trojans' lead to 6-3.  Gary Davis added a single to advance Erichsen to third base.

Brock Allen hit an RBI single to score Erichsen as BC trimmed their deficit to 6-4 in the bottom fourth.  Branden Amenta recoded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Davis, cutting Dakota State's lead to 6-5.

DSU scored twice in the top fifth inning to extend their lead by three runs.  JD Farley reached on base by a single.  Nathan Wieneke hit a single and advanced Farley to third base.  Barker hit an RBI double to score Farley to expand Trojans' lead to 7-5 (Wieneke advanced to third base).  DSU made it 8-5 after Schlesser hit an RBI single to score Wieneke.

The Trojans exploded for four runs on six consecutive hits in the sixth inning to widen their lead to 12-5.  DSU got six straight hits from Joe Davis (single), Farley (double), Serrata (2-RBI single), Spears (single), Wieneke (an RBI single) and Barker (an RBI single).

Serrata hit an RBI single in the top seventh inning to extend DSU's lead to 13-5.

Dakota State outscored the Chargers 7-0 in the final three innings.  The Trojans secured the game as BCU left one runner on base in the final inning.

Barker was 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run, two doubles, single and produced five RBIs for DSU.  Serrata added a double, two singles and three RBIs.  Wieneke and Schlesser each added three singles.  Wieneke recorded an RBI.  Farley and Halstead each had a double and a single.  Joe Davis and Andy Lee each recorded a single.

Farley scored three times in the game for the Trojans.  Barker, Joe Davis, Serrata and Spears each scored twice.  Lopiparo swiped one base.

Fiechtner recorded a triple for Briar Cliff.  Montejano added a double.  Erichsen, Gary Davis and Brock Allen each had two hits.  Amenta had two RBIs. 

Mitch Bouchard (1-0) picked up the victory on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He tossed four innings and allowed five runs (one unearned) on eight hits.  Bryant Westra recorded his third save of the season as he pitched three scoreless innings in relief.  He limited the Chargers to two hits.

Jaime Adams (0-1) recorded the loss for the Chargers.  He worked for four innings and allowed six runs (one unearned) on 10 hits.  Jon Muller came in the fifth inning and gave up two runs on four hits.  Weir Thomas worked in the sixth inning and allowed four runs on six hits.  Dylan Rana pitched for two outs in the seventh inning, giving up a run on one hit.  Owen Harris came in for 1/3 innings in relief.

Dakota State outhit Briar Cliff 21-10 in the game.  The Trojans left 10 runners on base compared to the Chargers' six runners left on base.    

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Briar Cliff (Iowa) 2 – FINAL

Dakota State held off Chargers' late-game rally in the second game of the doubleheader.

Barker was hit-by-pitch to kick off the game.  Serrata recorded a sacrifice ground out to advance Barker to second base.  A passed ball committed by Briar Cliff advanced Barker to third base.  Halstead hit an RBI ground out to score Barker to give Trojans their first lead of the game at 1-0.

DSU added a run in the top sixth frame to extend their lead by two runs.  Danny Flahie was hit-by-pitch to lead off the sixth inning.  Joe Davis hit a single to advance Flahie to third base.  Lee recorded an RBI double play to score Flahie as the Trojans' lead grew to 2-0.

Briar Cliff broke their scoring drought with a run score in the bottom sixth, trimming DSU's lead to 2-1.

The Trojans made it 3-1 in the top seventh inning caused by BCU's defensive error.

Erichsen started the bottom seventh inning with a double for the Chargers and advanced to third base on the same play caused by DSU's defensive miscue.  Gary Davis hit an RBI ground out to score Erichsen to reduce BCU's deficit to 3-2.

After Jeff Hackenmueller hit a ground out to third base for BCU, Amenta hit a double to right field.  The Trojans ended the game as Angel Talamantes recorded a fly out to right field, securing DSU's 11th victory of the season.

Joe Davis was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three singles for the Trojans.  Serrata added two singles.  Halstead recorded a single and an RBI.  Wieneke had a hit and swiped one base.  Barker scored twice.  Flahie added a run.

Amenta had a double and a single for the Briar Cliff.  Erichsen added a double and an RBI.  Matt Boswell had a hit and an RBI.

Seth Rockafellow (2-2) pitched six innings in victory for Dakota State.  He allowed an unearned run on three hits.  Rockafellow struck out four BCU's batters.  Westra picked up his second straight save on the same day, earning his fourth save overall this season as he closed the game in the seventh inning.  He gave up an unearned run on two hits.

Tyler Delperdang (0-1) recorded the loss in 4 2/3 innings of work for the Chargers.  He gave up a run on four hits.  Adam Alexander pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief and gave up one run on one hit.  Kyle Rommel worked in the seventh inning and allowed an unearned run on two hits.

DSU outhit BCU 7-5 in the game.  The Trojans left seven runners on base.  Briar Cliff had five runners left on base.

Dakota State continues their action on the road on Thursday against another opponent from the GPAC.  The Trojans were originally scheduled to host Mount Marty (S.D.) on Wednesday, but forced to relocate the nine-inning game at the Riverside Park in Yankton due to recent snowstorm that hit Madison's area.  The starting game time have not yet been determined.
