MADISON, S.D. - The Trojan baseball team played their final two home games Sunday against Dickinson State at the Flynn Field. Dickinson State rallied for 7-6 game one victory. The Trojans defeated the Blue Hawks 3-2 in the second game to earn a 2-2 weekend split with Dickinson State.

Dakota State finished their regular season with a 22-18 overall record and 12-8 in the DAC. Dickinson State concluded their season at 29-17 and 13-7 in the DAC.

Game One

Dickinson State scored the first run of the game in the opening inning. Liam Foran opened the game with a single up to the middle. Foran advanced to second base by a wild pitch from Trojan Jerod Burleson. Willie Sandez hit an RBI single up to the middle to score Foran for Blue Hawks' 1-0 lead.

Olson hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to give Dakota State a 2-1 lead.

Brian White hit a solo home run, his sixth home run of the season, in the bottom of the third inning to extend the Trojans' lead to 3-1.

Chris Young hit an RBI single to score Mike Nash as the Blue Hawks cut the Trojans' lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning.

White reached on base by Blue Hawks' defensive error to open the bottom of the fifth inning. Tiede hit a 2-run home run, his ninth home run of the season, to extend Dakota State's lead to 5-2.

Blue Hawk Young added an RBI single to score Kevin Park to trim the Trojans' lead to 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning.

Dickinson State scored four times in the ninth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Pinch hitter Tury Escobedo opened the inning with a single. Foran hit a double and advanced Hector Sanchez, pinch runner for Escobedo, to third base. Sandez hit an RBI single to score Sanchez and Nolan Bracken added an RBI sacrifice fly to score Foran to tie the game at 5-5. Nash hit an RBI single to score Larson, pinch runner for Sandez and Park scored by a passed ball to give the Blue Hawks the lead.

White and Tiede drew back-to-back bases on balls for Dakota State in the bottom of the ninth inning. Chance Hargrove hit a sacrifice bunt to advance White to third base and Tiede to second base. Grundmann hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score White to cut the deficit to 7-6. Garrett Gassman was struck out as the Trojans' rally fell short.

The Blue Hawks outhit the Trojans 13-7.

Olson went perfect behind the plate for Dakota State. He went 2-for-2 with a home run, a single, a walk, a run scored and recorded two RBIs. Tiede went 2-for-3 with a home run, a single and two RBIs. White added a home run. Grundmann and Roduner each added a single.

For Dickinson State, Young went 2-for-5 with two singles and two RBIs. Sandez went 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Nash and Foran each had a double and a single.

Jerod Burleson started the game for Dakota State. He tossed eight strong innings and allowed five runs on 11 hits. He struck out seven batters. Nick Mutz suffered the loss for the Trojans. He pitched the final inning and gave up two runs on two hits.

Roberto Gonzales pitched the first 5 2/3 innings for Dickinson State. He allowed five runs (one unearned) on six hits. Ryan Crossingham (3-0) recorded the win for the Blue Hawks. He tossed 3 1/3 innings and limited the Trojans to one run and one hit. He struck out four batters.

Both teams left nine runners left on base.

Game Two

The game was featured a pitching duel between Trojan Mutz and Blue Hawk Chase Doremus.

After three scoreless innings, the Trojans scored the first run of the game. Hunt was hit-by-pitch to open the bottom of the fourth inning. White hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Hunt to second base. Tiede hit an RBI double to score Hunt for Trojans' 1-0 lead.

Jose Figueroa hit a double to open the bottom of the fifth inning for Dakota State. Ryan Steffensen reached on base by an error from Blue Hawk and scored Chaz Palmer, courtesy runner for Figueroa, to extend Dakota State's lead to 2-0.

Dickinson State scored twice in the top of the sixth inning. Park and Nash hit back-to-back singles. Pinch hitter Ben Stanbury hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Park to third base and Nash to second base. Young hit 2-RBI single to score Park and Nash to tie the game at 2-2.

With bases loaded and one out situation for Dakota State in the bottom of the sixth inning, Hunt scored by a passed ball as the Trojans regain the lead at 3-2.

Dakota State closed the game by a double play from Hunt, Tiede and Olson to secure the victory.

Tiede and Figueora each had a double for the Trojans. White and Grundmann each added a single. Hunt scored twice.

Young went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Dickinson State. Sandez, Park and Nash each had a single.

Mutz (6-3) pitched a complete game win for Dakota State. He allowed two runs on six hits. He struck out nine batters.

Doremus (4-3) suffered the loss for the Blue Hawks. He pitched a complete game and allowed three runs (one unearned) on four hits. He struck out five batters.

It was the final home games for seniors Garrett Gassman, Lincoln Gassman, Derek Grundmann, Chad Hunt, Bob Olson, Zane Roduner, Donald Strand, Josh Tiede, and Brian White.

Dakota State will play in the DAC Baseball Postseason Tournament in Dickinson, N.D., starting on Friday, May 7th. The pairings have not been announced.
