MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) won in a slugfest action in the first game of the North Star Athletic Association Softball conference doubleheader versus Mayville State (N.D.) Monday afternoon at Thue Softball Complex. The Trojans hang on to a 13-10 victory. DSU went on to cruise for an 8-1 victory in the second game to complete a doubleheader sweep over the Comets.
Dakota State, which continued their 20-game home stand, raised their overall record to 7-16 and 3-1 NSAA conference record. Mayville State dropped to 3-11 overall record and 1-3 NSAA.
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 13, Mayville State (N.D.) 10 – FINAL
After a scoreless first inning, the Trojans grabbed the first lead of game in the bottom second frame. Kelli Heiser led off with a single. Samantha Mitchell hit an RBI triple to score Heiser to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
The Comets answered back with two runs scored in the top third inning. Felicia Gonzales recorded a single with one out. Nina Gurgian reached on base by a walk. Courtney Priddle hit a 2-RBI triple to score Gonzales and Gurgian as MSU overtook a 2-1 lead.
Dakota State produced six runs in the bottom third inning to regain their lead. Erica Belter started the inning with a single. Katie Slibowski recorded a walk. Elizabeth Rubalcava hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Belter to third base and Slibowski to second base. Brittany Hill hit a 2-RBI double to deep center to score Belter and Slibowski to take the lead away from MSU at 3-2.
Mitchell added an RBI single with two outs to score Brittany Hill to extend DSU's lead to 4-2 with two outs in the bottom third. Rachel Hughes hit an RBI double and advanced Mitchell to second. Stephanie Sandoval was hit-by-pitch to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU. Lexy Miller recorded an RBI base-on-balls to score Mitchell to extend Trojans' lead to 5-2.
After a pitching change by Mayville State with two outs in the bottom third frame, Bretton Lien (pinch hitter for Belter) hit a 2-RBI double to deep left field to score Hughes and Sandoval as DSU's lead grew to 7-2. The Trojans couldn't continue their scoring surge as Miller was tagged out at home after Lien recorded a double.
Mayville State rallied back to earn the lead for the second time in the top fourth inning with eight runs scored. The Comets opened the inning with three straight singles by Katrina Newman, Rachel Koopman and Megan Cole. Samantha Swimley hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Newman to cut DSU's lead to 7-3.
After MSU recorded the second out of the fourth inning, the Comets scored seven straight runs highlighted by Newman's grand slam for a 10-7 lead over the Trojans.
The runs kept piling up in the game as Dakota State added four runs in the bottom fourth. Rubalcava hit a triple with one out. Brittany Hill recorded an RBI single to score Rubalcava to trim their deficit to 10-8. Heiser added a single to advance Brittany Hill to second base. Mitchell hit an RBI double to score Brittany Hill to reduce MSU's lead to 10-9 (Heiser advanced to third base).
Dakota State regained their lead at 11-10 after Sandoval hit a 2-RBI single to score Heiser and Mitchell with two outs in the bottom fourth inning.
A total of 20 runs combined by DSU and MSU were scored in the third and fourth innings.
DSU added a pair of runs in the bottom sixth inning as the Trojans increased their lead to 13-10, thanks to a pair of solo home runs by Brittany Hill (3rd home run this season) and Mitchell (7th home run this season).
Mayville State went three-and-out in the seventh inning as the Trojans secured the victory.
Mitchell completed a hit cycle in the game (recorded a single, double, triple and home run in a single game) for the Trojans. She produced four RBIs in the game. Brittany Hill added three hits (triple, double, single) and recorded four RBIs. Heiser added two singles and scored twice. Lien had a double and two RBIs. Belter (single), Rubalcava (triple), Hughes (double) and Sandoval (single) each had a hit. Miller recorded an RBI.
Belter and Sandoval each swiped one base for DSU.
Newman was 2-for-4 at the plate with a grand slam and a single with four RBIs for Mayville State. Priddle added a triple, two singles and two RBIs. Swimley (double), Gonzales (single), Alexxa Sanabria (double), Gurgian (single), Koopman (single) and Cole (single) each recorded a hit. Gurgian had two RBIs. Swimley had a stolen base.
Slibowski started the game on the pitching mound for the Trojans. She tossed 3 2/3 innings and gave up 10 runs on 11 hits. Shai-Lee Hill (2-0) picked up the victory as she shut down the Comets in the final 3 1/3 innings. She retired the last 10 MSU's batters in the game.
Newman worked the first 2 2/3 innings of the game for the Comets. She allowed seven runs on six hits. Gonzales (1-5) recorded the loss as she pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, giving up six runs on eight hits. Koopman worked the final two outs in the bottom sixth inning for MSU.
DSU had 14 hits in the game compared to the Comets 11 hits. Both teams left four runners on base.
Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 8, Mayville State (N.D.) 1 – FINAL
The Trojans jumped to a 3-0 opening inning in the second of the doubleheader. Belter led off DSU with a walk. Slibowski hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Belter to second base. Rubalcava recorded an RBI double to deep center to score Belter for 1-0 DSU lead. Heiser added an RBI single to score Rubalcava to make it 2-0 in favor of the Trojans. Mitchell smashed an RBI triple to score Heiser for DSU's three-run lead.
Dakota State added another three-run inning in the bottom third inning, all runs scored with two outs. Brittany Hill had a single with one out. Mitchell was reached on base by a walk and advanced Brittany Hill to second base. Hughes hit a 2-RBI double down on left field line to score Brittany Hill and Mitchell to expand DSU's lead to 5-0. Sandoval added an RBI single to score Hughes for 6-0 DSU lead.
Rubalcava led off the Trojans with a triple in the bottom fourth frame. Brittany Hill produced an RBI single to score Rubalcava to increase DSU's lead to 7-0.
Heiser hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Lori Harshbarger (pinch runner for Brittany Hill) to second base in the bottom fourth for Dakota State. DSU make it 8-0 after MSU committed a defensive error to allow Harshbarger to score.
Swimley hit an RBI single in the top fifth inning as Mayville State extended the game instead of ending by eight-run mercy rule (8-1 DSU lead).
The Comets left one runner on base in the final inning as the Trojans sealed the victory.
Rubalcava was 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and a triple for Dakota State. Mitchell added a triple. Hughes recorded a double and produced two RBIs. Brittany Hill added two singles. Belter, Heiser and Sandoval each had a single.
Gurgian had a triple for the Comets. Priddle added a double. Swimley had a single and RBI. Newman, Sanabria and Cole each had a single. Cole swiped one base.
Ellie Kristensen (3-4) tossed a complete game victory for the Trojans. She allowed one run on six hits. Kristensen struck out seven MSU's batters.
Koopman (0-2) recorded the loss for the Comets. She pitched three innings and allowed eight runs (one unearned) on 11 hits. Gonzales worked for three innings in relief, giving up one hit.
DSU outhit Mayville State 12-6 in the game. MSU committed three defensive errors. Both teams left six runners on base.
Dakota State continues their action at home on Wednesday at Thue Softball Complex. The Trojans welcome Presentation (S.D.) in the NSAA softball conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. in Madison, S.D.
