MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University baseball team returned home Saturday for a DAC's final four-game series of the season. The Trojans welcomed Dickinson State in a breezy Flynn Field. Dickinson State rallied for game one victory 6-4. The Trojans came from behind in the second game 10-9 to earn a split with the Blue Hawks.
Dakota State is 21-17 overall and 11-7 in the DAC conference. Dickinson State is 28-16 overall and 12-6 in the conference.
Josh Tiede hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Trojans an early 1-0 lead.
With bases loaded and no outs situation for Dakota State in the bottom of the second inning, Bob Olson hit an RBI single to score Chaz Palmer, courtesy runner for catcher Derek Grundmann, for Trojans' 2-0 lead. Zane Roduner extended Dakota State's lead to 3-0 by a wild pitch from Blue Hawk Julian Ramirez.
In the top of the third inning, Willie Sanchez hit an RBI single to score Derrick Gunderson as Dickinson State cut the Trojans' lead to 3-1.
The Blue Hawks tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning by back-to-back RBI singles from Chris Young and Gunderson.
Bob Olson hit a double in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Trojans. Chad Hunt hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Olson to regain the lead at 4-3.
Dickinson State failed to tie or take over the lead in the top of the sixth inning with bases loaded and two outs situation.
Blue Hawk Nolan Bracken hit a two-run home run with two outs to overtake a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Kevin Park added a solo home run to extend their lead to 6-4.
Dakota State failed to convert their scoring opportunities after stranding runners on second and first bases.
Olson and Strand each went 2-for-4 from the Trojans. Olson had a double, a single, a run scored and an RBI. White had a double. Kelly Eppers-Hall added a single. Hunt, Jose Figueroa and White each recorded a stolen base.
Eight Dickinson State players had a least one hit in the game. Bracken went 2-for-5 with a home run, a single and two RBIs. Cole Zamira added two singles.
Both teams left eight runners on base.
Jared Donahue (4-3) pitched a complete game in losing effort for Dakota State. He gave up six runs on 10 hits. He struck out six batters and extended his school record to 88 strikeouts in a season.
Julian Ramirez (5-2) recorded the win for Dickinson State. He tossed eight innings and allowed four runs (one unearned) on six hits. Chase Doremus got his second save of the season as he closed the game in the final inning. He gave up a hit and struck out two batters.
White hit two-run home run, his fifth homer of the season, to put Dakota State up 2-0 in the opening inning.
Gunderson hit two-RBI single to score Kevin Park and Mike Nash as Dickinson State tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second inning.
Park hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning as the Blue Hawks leads 3-2.
Dickinson State scored three times to extend their lead to 6-2 caused by Trojans' defensive miscues in the top of the fourth inning.
Dakota State exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ryan Steffensen hit an RBI single to score Kelly Eppers-Hall to cut the Blue Hawks' lead to 6-3. With bases loaded and one out situation for the Trojans. White hit a 3-RBI double to score Roduner, Steffensen and Hunt to tie the game at 6-6. Tiede hit a 2-run home run to give the Trojans 8-6 lead.
Sanchez hit an RBI ground out in the top of the fifth inning to trim Trojans' lead to 8-7.
Park hit a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth inning as Dickinson State regained the lead at 9-8.
White opened the bottom of the sixth inning with a walk for the Trojans. Tiede hit his second 2-run home run of the game, his eighth homer this season, as the Trojans regained their lead at 10-9.
Dickinson State was unable to score in the final inning as the Blue Hawks left a runner on third base.
White went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and five RBIs for Dakota State. Tiede added two home runs, two runs scored and recorded four RBIs. Roduner went 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and a run scored. Hunt, Eppers-Hall and Steffensen each had a single.
For Dickinson State, Park went 2-for-3 with two home runs, three runs scored and recorded three RBIs. Gunderson and Nash each had two singles.
Lincoln Gassman started on the mound for the Trojans. He tossed 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs (three unearned) on nine hits. He struck out six batters. Nick Mutz (5-2) recorded the victory for Dakota State. He pitched 2 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs on one hit.
Ryan Saunders pitched the first 3 1/3 innings for Dickinson State. He allowed eight runs on seven hits. Tucker Slagle (2-2) suffered the loss as he tossed 2 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs on three hits.
Dakota State will host Dickinson State in the regular season finale Sunday. The doubleheader is slated at 1 p.m. at the Flynn Field. Senior Day will be held.
