MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University softball team continued their 20-game home stand Friday afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader versus in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) at Thue Softball Complex.  The Trojans defeated the Lancers in the first game of the doubleheader 11-3 (6 innings), but the Lancers earned a doubleheader split by holding off DSU's late comeback by the score of 8-4 in the night cap.

Dakota State, who is 4-4 record in the current home stand, is 8-19 overall record.  Mount Marty, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference is 4-18 overall record.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 11, Mount Marty (S.D.) 3 – FINAL/6 innings    

The Trojans struck first in the bottom second inning with three runs scored.  With runners on third and second bases with two outs, Lexy Miller ripped a 2-RBI double to deep left field to score Rachel Hughes and Stephanie Sandoval for DSU's 2-0 lead.  Erica Belter added an RBI single to score Miller to make it 3-0 in favor of the Trojans.

Samantha Mitchell drilled a triple with one out in the bottom third frame for Dakota State.  After Hughes was reached on base by a walk, Mitchell scored from MMC's defensive error to extend Trojans' lead to 4-0.

The Lancers ended their scoreless innings with three runs scored in the top fourth inning.  Courtney Hansen started the inning with a single.  Michaela Bunde blasted a 2-run home run with one out and scored Tiffany Tramp to cut DSU's lead to 3-2. 

Amber Krause added a double for MMC in the top fourth inning.  Katie Groteluschen, pinch hitter for Emilie Pechacek, recorded an RBI single to score Krause to reduce Lancers' deficit to 4-3.

The Trojans scored a run in the bottom fifth to expand their lead by two runs.  Brittany Hill hit a triple with one out.  Mitchell produced an RBI single to score Hill as DSU's lead grew to 5-3.

Dakota State exploded for six runs in the bottom sixth, securing the game by mercy-run rule.  Miller reached by base-on-balls.  She swiped to second base.  Belter recorded a single to advance Miller to third base.  Belter stole for second base.  Katie Slibowski reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation with one out for the Trojans.

Elizabeth Rubalcava added another walk for DSU to score Miller to give DSU a 6-3 lead in the bottom sixth inning.  Hill hit a 2-RBI single to score Belter and Slibowski to extend Trojans' lead to 8-3.  Mitchell added an RBI single to score Rubalcav for 9-3 DSU lead.  Mitchell swiped to second base.  After the Trojans recorded the second out of the sixth inning, Kelli Heiser reached on base by a walk for another bases loaded situation for DSU.  Pinch-hitter Bretton Lien reached on base caused by Lancers' defensive miscue, allowing the Trojans to score two runs to end the game by eight-run mercy rule with two outs remaining.

Mitchell was perfect at the plate for the Trojans, going 4-for-4 with a triple, three singles and produced two RBIs.  Miller added a double and two RBIs.  Hill had a triple, single and recorded two RBIs.  Belter had two singles and an RBI.  Hughes had a single.  Mitchell and Miller each scored twice.  Belter, Slibowski, Rubalcava, Hill, Lynnie Angle, Hughes and Sandoval each scored once. 

DSU had five stolen bases in the game.  Mitchell swiped two bases.  Belter, Sandoval and Miller each had a stolen base.

Bunde was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, single and two RBIs for Mount Marty.  Krause added a double and a single.  Groteluschen had a single and an RBI.  Karlee Kozak, Lauren Orwig, Olivia Rodriquez and Hansen each had a hit.  Rodriquez swiped one base.

Slibowski (3-0) earned the victory on the pitching mound as she pitched a complete game in six innings.  He allowed three runs on nine hits.  Slibowski struck out three MMC batters.

Krause recorded the defeat for the Lancers.  She worked for the first three innings and allowed four runs (one unearned) on four hits.  Groteluschen pitched two innings in relief and gave up a run on three hits.  Hansen tossed 2/3 innings and allowed six runs (two unearned) on three hits.

DSU outhit MMC 10-9 in the game.  Mount Marty left eight runners on base.  The Trojans left seven runners on base.

Game 2 – Mount Marty (S.D.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL    

Mount Marty went on an 8-0 lead through 5-and-half inning before the Trojans broke up their scoring drought in the night cap.  The Trojans could not complete their come back as they fell short by four runs.

After both teams went scoreless in the first two innings, Krause smashed a 2-run home run with two outs in the top third inning to give MMC their first lead of the game at 2-0.

The Lancers added two runs in the top fifth inning to expand their lead to four runs.  Kozak led off with a single.  Rodriquez hit an RBI triple as Mount Marty increased their lead to 3-0.  Krause added an RBI single to score Rodriquez to make it 4-0 in favor of the Lancers.

MMC extended their lead to 8-0 with four runs in the top sixth inning, highlighted by Krause's 2-RBI double with two outs.

The Trojans avoided the mercy rule in the bottom sixth frame with two runs scored.  Hill hit a double with one out.  Mitchell blasted a 2-run home run (and scored Lori Harshbarger – pinch runner for Hill) as DSU cut MMC's lead to 8-2 and extended the game into the seventh inning.

After the Lancers went three-and-out in the top seventh inning, Dakota State was attempting to mount a comeback.  Marita Rasche kicked off the bottom seventh inning with a single.  Shai-Lee Hill, pinch hitter for Miller, drilled a double down at right field and advanced Rasche to third base.

Belter hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Rasche to trim DSU's deficit to 8-3 (advanced Miller – pinch runner for Shai-Lee Hill) to third base).  Slibowski added an RBI ground out to score Miller to reduce MMC's lead to 8-4.  The Lancers closed the game by recording the final out of the game.

Mitchell had a home run (her eighth home run this season) and produced two RBIs for the Trojans.  Rasche had a triple and a single.  Brittany Hill had a double and a single.  Shai-Lee Hill recorded a double.  Angle had a single.  Belter and Slibowski each had an RBI. 

Krause was 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, double and single with five RBIs for Mount Marty.  Rodriquez added a triple, two singles and two RBIs.  Brittni Bormann had two singles.  Kozak, Megan Meister and Jessica Wirth each had a hit.

Ellie Kristensen (3-5) recorded the loss for the Trojans.  She pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits.  Kristensen recorded four strikeouts.  Hughes worked for 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing four unearned runs on four hits.

Krause (3-8) tossed a complete game victory for MMC.  She gave up four runs on seven hits.  She struck out four DSU's batters.

The Lancers outhit DSU 11-7 in the game.  Mount Marty left six runners on base compared to the Trojans five runners left on base.

Dakota State returns to action Saturday afternoon with a tripleheader.  The Trojans continue their home stand, hosting future member of the North Star Athletic Association member – Dickinson State (N.D.).  First game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m., followed by another pair of games at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at Thue Softball Complex in Madison, S.D.
