MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University softball team continued their 20-game home stand Saturday afternoon as they hosted future member of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA), Dickinson State (N.D.), at Thue Softball Complex. The Blue Hawks swept the Trojans in the tripleheader action by the scores of 5-0, 7-3 and 9-1 (6 innings).
Dakota State lost their fourth straight game and dropped their overall record to 8-22. Dickinson State, who will join the NSAA conference in the 2014-15 academic year, raised their overall record to 21-13.
Game 1 – Dickinson State (N.D.) 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL
The Blue Hawks blanked the Trojans in the first game of the doubleheader, despite Trojan pitcher Katie Slibowski recording eight strikeouts from the pitching mound.
After two scoreless innings, Dickinson State scored twice in the top of the third inning. Kailey Olcott and Rebecca Lopez each recorded walks. Alex Vargas hit a 2-RBI double with two outs to score Olcott and Lopez to give the Blue Haws a 2-0 lead.
Justeena Gutierrez and Lopez led off with a pair of bunt singles in the top fifth frame for DiSU. Vargas added a 2-RBI single to score Gutierrez and Lopez to make it 4-0 in favor of the Blue Hawks.
Dakota State was unable to score in the bottom fifth inning as they left three runners on base.
Olcott hit a solo home run in the top sixth inning to extend DiSU's lead to 5-0.
The Trojans left a runner on base in the final inning as the Blue Hawks secured the victory.
Vargas was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, single and produced four RBIs for DiSU. Olcott added a home run and an RBI. Sullivan recorded a double. Lopez, Brianna Grayson, Janell LaRont and Gutierrez each had a hit.
Slibowski (3-1) tossed a complete game as she recorded her first pitching loss for Dakota State. She allowed five runs (one unearned) on eight hits.
Regan Lawrence pitched a complete game victory for Dickinson State. She limited the Trojans to four hits and recorded six strikeouts.
DaSU left eight runners on base compared to DiSU four runners left on base.
Defensively, Dakota State recorded two double plays in the game.
Game 2 – Dickinson State (N.D.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL
Dickinson State exploded for five runs in the top sixth inning to break up a 2-2 tie into a five-run lead, and held on to defeat the Trojans by four runs in the second game.
The Blue Hawks earned the first lead of the game in the top third inning. Lopez and Monique Yslas led off with back-to-back singles. Vargas recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Lopez to third and Yslas to second base. Sullivan hit an RBI ground out to score Lopez for a 1-0 lead.
The Trojans answered back with one run scored in the bottom third, thanks to Slibowski's lead-off triple. Brittany Hill hit a fielder's choice to second base and Slibowski reached safely at home as DiSU missed a tag, allowing DaSU to knot the game at 1-1.
Dickinson State scored once in the top fourth inning to regain their lead at 2-1. LaRont hit a single and advanced to third base after Lawrence's sacrifice bunt. A passed ball committed by the Trojans allowed LaRont to score, giving the Blue Hawks a one-run lead.
Dakota State earned another lead-off triple in the bottom fifth inning, this time by Rubalcava. Hill produced an RBI single to score Rubalcava to record the second tie of the game at 2-2.
The Blue Hawks scored five times in the top half of the sixth frame to break a 2-2 tie into a 7-2 lead. Lawrence hit an RBI double with one out as DiSU earned a 3-2 lead. Dickinson State went on to score four straight runs –all by two outs – by Gutierrez's RBI triple, Lopez's RBI single, Yslas' RBI double and Vargas' RBI double.
The Trojans scored once in the bottom half of the sixth inning to reduce DiSU's lead to four runs. Belter reached on base by a walk with two outs. Slibowski ripped her second triple of the game, producing an RBI to score Belter to trim DaSU's deficit to 7-3.
Both teams did not score in the final inning. DaSU left one runner on base when the game ended.
Slibowski had two triples and an RBI for Dakota State. Rubalcava added a triple. Hill recorded a single and two RBIs. Stephanie Sandoval and Miller each had a hit.
Vargas had a tripke, double, single and an RBI for Dickinson State. Lopez and Yslas each had two hits and an RBI. Lawrence recorded a double and an RBI. Sullivan and Gutierrez each had a hit and an RBI. LaRont recorded a single.
Hughes (3-6) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for the Trojans. She worked for 5 2/3 innings and allowed five runs (one unearned) on nine hits. Shai-Lee Hill came in the sixth inning and gave up two runs on three hits. Ellie Kristensen pitched 1 1/3 shutouts innings in relief.
Tiffany Morgan (3-0) earned the victory for the Blue Hawks as she pitched 5 2/3 innings. She allowed three runs on six hits. Lawrence worked the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Dickinson State outhit Dakota State 12-6 in the game. The Trojans left 10 runners on base compared to the Blue Hawks six runners left on base.
The Blue Hawks committed three defensive errors compared to DaSU one defensive error.
Game 3 – Dickinson State (N.D.) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL/6 innings
Dickinson State raced to an 8-1 lead through the first three innings and ended the game by eight-run mercy rule in the sixth inning.
The Blue Hawks scored three runs in the opening inning for a 3-0 lead, highlighted by a 2-run home run by Sullivan.
DiSU added two runs in the top second frame. Grayson led off with a triple. Gutierrez hit an RBI single to score Grayson as the Blue Hawks' lead grew to 4-0. After McKenzie Kenobbie's sacrifice bunt to advance Gutierrez to second base, Lopez added an RBI single to score Guiterrez for a 5-0 DiSU lead.
The Trojans scored a run in the bottom second inning. Hughes produced a single with one out. She advanced to second base after the Blue Hawks committed a passed ball. Kelli Heiser hit a single to advance Hughes to third base, but DiSU committed a defensive error on the same play to allow Hughes to score. Dickinson State's lead was reduced to 5-1.
Lawrence drilled a triple with one out in the top third inning for the Blue Hawks. LaRont hit an RBI single to score Lawrence to extend Dickinson State's lead to 6-1. Gutierrez added a 2-RBI triple for an 8-1 DiSU lead.
Lawrence hit an RBI double in the top sixth inning to expand Blue Hawks' lead to 9-1.
Dakota State went three-and-out in the bottom sixth frame as DiSU secured the victory.
Slibowski was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Trojans. Mitchell, Hughes, Heiser, Sandoval and Miller each had a single. Mitchell, Sandoval and Miller each recorded a stolen base.
Lawrence was 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, triple and double with three RBIs for the Blue Hawks. Gutierrez added a triple, single and recorded three RBIs. Grayson had a triple. Lopez and Vargas each had two hits. Sullivan and LaRont each had a single and an RBI.
Kristensen (3-6) recorded the loss for the Trojans. She pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up five runs (three unearned) on five hits. Lori Harshbarger worked for one inning in relief and allowed three runs (one unearned) on two hits. Slibowski tossed 3 2/3 innings and gave up one run on five hits.
Lawrence (10-4) earned her second pitching victory for Dickinson State. She tossed six innings and gave up an unearned run on seven hits. Lawrence recorded six strikeouts.
DiSU outhit DaSU 12-7 in the game. The Blue Hawks left seven runners on base while the Trojans left six runners on base.
Dakota State and Dickinson State are scheduled to play their fourth game in the four-game series on Sunday. First pitch for a single non-conference game is set for 12 p.m. at Thue Softball Complex.
