VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to score in the first game of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Baseball conference doubleheader at the Charlie Brown Stadium Saturday afternoon as Valley City State (N.D.) earned a 3-0 victory. The Trojans held on to defeat the Vikings 4-3 in 11 innings in the second game, avoiding a four-game series sweep by VCSU.
Dakota State snapped their four-game losing skid and lifted their overall record to 17-20 and 2-6 NSAA conference record (6-6 NSAA/Frontier conference record). Valley City State dropped to 15-22 overall record and 3-3 NSAA (6-4 NSAA/Frontier conference record).
Game 1 – Valley City State (N.D.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL
Dakota State was held to three hits as Valley City State earned a 3-0 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.
VCSU scored once on the bottom second frame for a 1-0 lead. Dan Buehner reched on base by a walk with one out. Derek Elliott, courtesy runner for Buehner, swiped to second base. Robert Wiley hit an RBI single with two outs to score Elliott for Vikings' one-run lead.
Valley City State added two runs – both with two outs – in the fifth inning. Wiley led off with a walk, followed by Kayl Hamre single. Jared Meiklejohn hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Wiley to third base and Hamre to second base. Jake Rambow produced a 2-RBI single to score Wiley and Hamre to extend VCSU's lead to 3-0.
The Trojans were unable to score in the final inning as they left runner on base when the game ended.
Rambow had a single and recorded two RBIs for Valley City State. Wiley added a single and an RBI. Anthony Necochea, Brady Anderson and Hamre each had a hit. Elliott swiped one base.
Mitch Bouchard (2-1) pitched six innings in losing effort for Dakota State. He allowed three runs on five hits. Bouchard struck out six VCSU's batters.
Mike Gershman (2-1) tossed a complete game victory for the Vikings. He gave up three hits.
DSU had four runners left on base. VCSU left three runners on base.
Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 4, Valley City State (N.D.) 3 – FINAL/11 innings
In the final game of the four-game series (nine-inning game), the Trojans jumped to a 3-0 lead before the Vikings mounted a comeback to force the game into extra innings. DSU scored a run in the top 11th and avoided the four-game series by holding off VCSU 4-3.
It was the second time in the four-game series that the game had been extended into extra innings.
Dakota State earned the first lead of the game in the top second frame. Danny Flahie and Farley recorded back-to-back walks with two outs. Nathan Wieneke hit an RBI single to score Flahie to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Lee led off the third inning with a single for DSU. David Halstead blasted a 2-run home run as the Trojans' lead grew to 3-0.
The Vikings ended their scoreless innings with a run scored in the bottom fourth inning. Cole Honl hit a single. Buehner was reached on base by a walk and advanced Honl to second base. After the second out was record in the bottom half of the inning, Nathan Bagby produced an RBI single to score Honl as VCSU cut DSU's lead to 3-1.
Valley City State reduced their deficit to 3-2 in the bottom fifth after Anderson's RBI single.
With runners on second and first bases with two outs in the bottom eighth inning, Meiklejohn recorded an RBI double to knot the game at 3-3.
Both teams were unable to score in the ninth inning as the game was forced into extra innings. Valley City State left a runner on second base in the bottom ninth inning.
Dakota State could not convert their scoring chances in the top 10th inning as they left two runners on base. VCSU went three-and-out in the bottom half of the 10th inning.
The Trojans ended their seven scoreless innings as they scored a run in the top 11th inning. Farley was reached on base by a walk. Ryan Schlesser recorded a single and advanced Farley to second base. Lee produced an RBI single with two outs to score Farley as DSU regained their lead at 4-3.
Dakota State secured the game in the bottom 11th inning as VCSU left a runner on first base.
Halstead was 2-for-5 at the plate with a home run, single and earned two RBIs for the Trojans. Ian Barker added a double and a single. Wieneke and Lee each had two singles and an RBI. Joe Davis recorded two singles.
Meiklejohn had a double, two singles and an RBI for the Vikings. Bagby added two hits and an RBI. Honl had a double and a single. Necochea, Anderson and Buehner each had a hit.
Seth Rockafellow tossed nine innings in the game for Dakota State. He allowed three runs on nine hits. Rockafellow struck out five Vikings' batters. Mike Chartier (1-0) earned his first victory of the season as he worked two scoreless innings in relief. He gave up one hit and recorded three strikeouts.
Chip Rosales (3-5) pitched all 11 innings in losing effort for Valley City State. He gave up four runs on 11 hits and recorded five strikeouts.
The Trojans had 11 hits in the game compared to the Vikings 10 hits. Both teams left 11 runners on base.
Dakota State steps aside their NSAA conference play as they face Briar Cliff (Iowa) in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The time and location have not yet been determined. Stay tuned to the DSU Athletics website for future updates on the Trojan Baseball schedule.
