MADISON, S.D. – The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) has picked Samantha Mitchell of Dakota State (S.D.) as its Co-NSAA Softball Player-of-the-Week, the fifth edition was announced Monday. Mitchell shared the weekly honor with Valley City State's third baseman Brittany Lehner.
Mitchell, a 5-foot-2 shortshop for the Trojans, was perfect at the plate twice, going 4-for-4 last week. She recorded a hit cycle (a home run, triple, double, single) and produced four runs batted in (RBIs) in 13-10 NSAA conference thriller versus Mayville State (N.D.) on April 7 at Thue Softball Complex. She also went 4-for-4 with a triple, three singles and two RBIs in an 11-3 victory versus Mount Marty (S.D.).
For the week, Mitchell was 12-for-27 at the plate (.444 batting average) with eight run scored and produced nine RBIs as the Trojans earned three victories last week. She produced six extra bases hits with three triples, two home runs and a double and recorded a slugging percentage of .926. She swiped five bases in five attempts.
Mitchell leads Dakota State this season with a batting average of .436 and racked up a total of 34 hits. According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Monday, Mitchell ranks sixth in the nation in slugging percentage of .897. She is 16th in the nation in home runs per game (0.3) and 18th in total bases per game (2.6) and triples per game (0.1). She recorded four triples this season, which is 33rd best in the nation.
Mitchell accumulated a total of eight home runs this season for DSU, ranking her 39th in the nation.
Samantha is the daughter of Matthew and Chelease DeBartolo of Buckley, Wash. She is a freshman Exercise Science major at Dakota State University.
Dakota State (8-22 overall record, 3-3 NSAA conference record) continues their home stand on Friday and Saturday. The Trojans welcome Jamestown (N.D.) in the NSAA four-game series at Thue Softball Complex. The doubleheader kicks off at 1 p.m. on both days in Madison.
