THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University baseball team (18-24 overall record, 3-9 North Star Athletic Association conference record, 7-9 NSAA/Frontier conference record) plays their final non-conference tune-up on Wednesday afternoon. The Trojans visit NCAA Division I South Dakota State (20-18) in a nine-inning game at Erv Huether Field in Brookings, S.D. On Saturday and Sunday, Dakota State plays the final regular-season NSAA's four-game series with Presentation (S.D.) (9-36, 3-9 NSAA, 3-11 NSAA/Frontier). The Trojans and Saints will play home-and-home series with PC hosting on Saturday and DSU hosting on Sunday.
DAVIS POWERS TROJANS IN 6-5 VICTORY OVER UJ: Dakota State earned a 5-1 lead (all by Joe Davis' 5-RBIs) in the four-game series finale versus Jamestown (N.D.), who received votes to the latest NAIA Baseball Coaches' 'Top 25' national poll, on April 19 in Lennox, S.D. The Jimmies rallied back with four runs in the top sixth inning to tie the game at 5-5, but the Trojans scored the game-winning run in the bottom sixth inning by Ryan Schlesser's RBI single to score Nathan Wieneke. With the victory, the Trojans ended UJ's six-game winning streak. Davis smashed a pair of 2-run home runs in the game with his first one in the opening inning and another one in the bottom fifth frame.
MULTI-HITS GAMES: Three Trojans had surpassed 10 multi-hit games this season. Danny Flahie and Joe Davis each had 15 multi-hits games, while David Halstead recoded 11 games that had at least two hits. Flahie is ranked 11th in the nation with five total triples, which is a DSU school record for most triples in a single season.
FINAL WEEK OF REGULAR-SEASON PLAY: Dakota State is heading in the final week of regular-season play. The Trojans play their final non-conference tilt on Wednesday afternoon at NCAA Division I South Dakota State. DSU concludes their regular season play this weekend with a four-game NSAA series with Presentation (S.D.). The Trojans and Saints are scheduled to play home-and-home series. The postseason tournament kicks off on May 2 at the Charlie Brown Stadium in Valley City, N.D., hosted by Valley City State. The pairings will be announced after the conclusion of the regular-season play early next week.
TROJANS SENIORS: Dakota State have eight seniors listed on their roster this season, who will be playing their final regular-season games this week. They are Mike Chartier, Danny Flahie, Andy Lee, Seth Rockafellow, Jordan Sovich, Seth Spears, Drew Sweeter and Austin Weber.
DSU DEFENSE NATIONAL RANKS: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Tuesday, Dakota State ranks 40th in the nation in assists per game with an average of 10.3 assists. Nathan Wieneke is 18th in the nation in assists per game (3.1). David Halstead averages 8.1 chances per game, which ranks 38th in the nation. He is also 38th in the nation in putouts per game (7.5 putouts per game.).
REGIONALLY SPEAKING: There is no change to the latest North Star/Frontier Baseball weekly rankings, which was released on Monday afternoon. Jamestown (N.D.) holds the top spot with an overall record of 26-7, followed by Mayville State (N.D.) for the second spot with 32-11 record. Both UJ and MSU received votes to the NAIA Baseball Coaches' 'Top 25' national poll, announced on Tuesday afternoon. Valley City State (N.D.) is No. 3 with 17-24 overall record. Dakota State ranks No. 4 (18-23 overall record). Dickinson State (N.D.) is fifth with 9-33 record and Presentation (S.D.) sixth (9-36 overall record). All six teams will be playing in the unaffiliated NSAA/Frontier Baseball Conference Postseason Tournament at the Charlie Brown Stadium in Valley City, N.D. on May 2-5. The winner of the conference tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Baseball National Tournament on May 12-14 at nine different campus sites (5 teams on each site) announced by the NAIA.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State won the four-game series finale against the NSAA's conference leader Jamestown (N.D.) on April 17-18 in Lennox, S.D. The Trojans dropped the first three games of the series to the Jimmies by the scores of 8-3, 16-0 and 2-1 and rallied back for a 6-5 series closing game victory. DSU dropped a 10-0 non-conference contest to NAIA's No. 20-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) on April 21 in Orange City, Iowa. South Dakota State won three of four road games with Fort Wayne (Ind.) on April 18-20 in Summit League conference games. The Jackrabbits defeated IPFW 11-1, 3-2 and 3-0 before dropping the series finale 12-2. Presentation (S.D.) split a four-game NSAA series with Valley City State (N.D.) by winning the first game of the doubleheader each day on April 18-19. The Saints earned 5-3 and 12-8 victories over the Vikings, but dropped 6-5 and 14-0 contests in each second game of the doubleheader.
QUICK LEADERS: Joe Davis leads the Trojans' offense attack with 57 hits and produced a batting average of .390. He also leads the team with 31 total runs batted in (RBIs) and averaged 0.7 RBIs per game. Andy Lee swipes two bases this season. Austin Weber leads the team with 3.86 earned run average in 49 innings (21 earned runs) with a 5-2 pitching record. He accumulates a total of 35 strikeouts (6.4 strikeouts per game) on the pitching mound. Bryant Westra leads the team with six saves, ranking him 24th-best in the nation.
