BROOKINGS, S.D. – Dakota State played its final non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon, visitng NCAA Division I South Dakota State at Erv Huether Field. The Jackrabbits used 16 hits to defeat the Trojans by the score of 11-1.
DSU dropped their overall record to 18-25. South Dakota State improved to 21-18 overall record.
The Jackrabbits got on board first in the opening inning. Scott Splett led off with a double. After Zach Coppola hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Splett to third, Aaron Machbitz hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Splett for 1-0 SDSU lead.
South Dakota State added two runs in the bottom second frame to extend their lead to 3-0 after Coppola's 2-RBI double.
Paul Jacobsen produced an RBI single as SDSU's lead grew to 5-0 in the bottom fifth inning.
Dakota State ended their scoring drought in the top half of the sixth inning. The Trojans had a bases loaded with two out situation. Nathan Wieneke recorded an RBI walk to score Joe Davis as DSU trimmed SDSU's lead to 5-1. Dakota State was unable to add more runs as they left all three runners on base.
The Jackrabbits answered with four runs in the bottom sixth, highlighted by a pair of home runs. Cody Sharrow had a solo home run. Machbitz added a 3-run home run, extending South Dakota State's lead to 9-1.
SDSU led off the bottom seventh inning with four straight pinch-hitter singles to produce two runs. Patrick Korman had a 2-RBI single, including Jackrabbits' lead to 11-1.
DSU left a runner on base when the game ended, securing the victory for the Jackrabbits.
The Trojans had seven hits in the game. Ian Barker had a double and single. Nick Serrata and Andy Lee each added two singles. Wieneke recorded a single and an RBI. He had two walks in the game. Lee, Danny Flahie and Jake Ferdinand each had a walk.
Machbitz had a home run and four RBIs for SDSU. Sharrow added a home run and single with an RBI. Coppola was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, two singles and two RBIs. Splett recorded two doubles.
Nine different pitchers saw action for Dakota State. Jordan Sovich (1-8) recorded the loss for the Trojans as he gave up one run on one hit in the first inning. Robert Roman, Mike Chartier, Zac Smith, Luke Gassman, Jamie Jorgensen and Bryant Westra each worked for one inning in relief. Danny Lopiparo and Seth Spears also pitched in the sixth inning.
Austin Kost, Ryan Froom and Derringer Huff each pitched two innings on the mound for SDSU, with Kost credited for victory. Five other Jackrabbits also saw mound duty.
South Dakota State left 12 runners on base compared to DSU 10 runners left on base. Both teams recorded a double play defensively, one by Flahie and Halstead for the Trojans.
Dakota State returns back to North Star Athletic Association conference action this weekend. The Trojans play their final four-game series with Presentation (S.D.). The first doubleheader takes place in Aberdeen, S.D. on Saturday afternoon at Fossum Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
