REDFIELD, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) jumped to a pair of early leads and cruised past Presentation (S.D.) Friday in the North Star Athletic Association Baseball conference doubleheader sweep at Redfield Baseball Complex. The Trojans posted scores of 10-6 and 13-4 over the Saints, earning 19th and 20th victories of the season as the NSAA Baseball heads in the final weekend of regular-season conference play. DSU had won their third straight NSAA conference game.
Dakota State lifted their overall record to 20-25 and 5-9 NSAA conference record (9-9 NSAA/Frontier conference record). Presentation is 9-38 overall record and 3-10 NSAA (3-15 NSAA/Frontier record).
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 10, Presentation (S.D.) 6 – FINAL
The Trojans earned the first lead of the game in the opening inning, thanks to three consecutive singles by Nick Serrata, Joe Davis and Halstead. Halstead produced a 2-RBI single to score Serrata and Davis for 2-0 DSU lead.
Dakota State added five more runs in the top third frame. Davis hit a double with one out and advanced to third base on PC's wild pitch. After Halstead recorded a walk, Barker earned an RBI single to score Davis to make it 3-0 in favor of the Trojans.
Andy Lee reached on bases by a walk for bases loaded with one out in the top third, the Saints committed the second wild pitch of the inning to allow Halstead to score (4-0 DSU lead). Nathan Wieneke added an RBI single to score Barker (5-0 DSU lead).
DSU's Ryan Schlesser was hit-by-pitch to gain a bases loaded situation for the second time in the third inning. JD Farley recorded an RBI and Danny Flahie hit an RBI single to widen Trojans' lead to 7-0.
Presentation broke their scoreless drought with three runs scored in the bottom third inning. Dylan Segula and CJ Weinhoff led off with back-to-back singles. Lane Hovde hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Segula and Weinhoff one base. Chad Ellingson and Johnnie Morris recorded back-to-back RBI singles to cut PC's deficit to 7-3.
Saint Tony Hofman added an RBI double to reduce DSU's lead to 7-4 in the bottom third.
PC added a run in the fourth inning after Ellingson recorded an RBI to trim their deficit to 7-5.
The Trojans set up a bases loaded with one out after Schlesser's walk, Farley's single and Flahie's single. Serrata produced an RBI to score Danny Lopiparo – courtesy runner for Schlesser – to extend DSU's lead to 8-5.
Ryan Baldonado and Hofman started the bottom fifth with back-to-back singles, earning a run after DSU committed a defensive error to score Baldonado with two outs. The Trojans held on to an 8-6 lead.
Dakota State expanded their lead to 10-6 after scoring two runs caused by PC's defensive miscue in the top seventh.
The Saints left one runner on base in the final inning as the Trojans secured the victory.
Serrata had two singles and collected three RBIs for the Trojans. Davis and Halstead each had a double and single. Flahie and Wieneke each added two singles and an RBI. Schlesser earned two hits, while Lopiparo scored three times as a courtesy runner for Schlesser. Barker and Farley each recorded a hit and an RBI. Lopiparo swiped one base.
Hofman had a double, single and earned two RBIs for Presentation. Baldonado and Weinhoff each added two hits. Ellingson recorded a single and two RBIs. Morris earned a hit and an RBI. Segula had a single and scored twice. Segula, Morris and Ellingson each swiped one base.
Seth Rockafellow worked for three innings on the mound for DSU. He allowed five runs on six hits and recorded three strikeouts. Ross Kortan (1-1) pitched one-plus inning and gave up an unearned run on two hits, earning his first victory this season. Austin Weber and Bryant Westra tossed for a combined of three scoreless innings in relief.
Baldonado (1-6) recorded the loss as he pitched 2 1/3 innings on the mount, giving up seven runs (one unearned) on eight hits. Ryan Wolf tossed 4 2/3 innings in relief and allowed three runs (two unearned) on six hits.
DSU outhit PC 14-9 in the game. Both teams recorded one double play defensively.
The Trojans left eight runners on base compared to the Saints five runner left on base.
Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 13, Presentation (S.D.) 4 – FINAL
DSU's offense burst for six runs to kick off the second game of the doubleheader. Flahie led off the game with a double. Serrata reached on base by PC's defensive error to allow Flahie to score for Trojans' first run of the game (1-0 DSU lead).
Davis added a double and advanced Serrata to third base in the top first. Halstead reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans. Barker drilled an RBI single to score Serrata and Davis as the Trojans' lead grew to 3-0. Wieneke added an RBI to score Halstead for 4-0 DSU lead.
Jordan Entrikin blast a 2-run home run in the first inning as the Trojans raced to a 6-0 lead. It was his first home run this season.
Dakota State added a pair of runs in the top second frame by Halstead's RBI single and Barker's RBI sacrifice fly. The Trojans widen their lead to 8-0.
Presentation scored three runs in the bottom third to end their scoring drought. Weinhoff and Segula hit back-to-back doubles as Segula registered an RBI for PC's first run of the game. Ellingson added a single to advance Segula to third base, but scored at home caused by DSU's defensive error on the same play to cut Saints' deficit to 8-2.
Morris added the third PC's double of the bottom third inning and scored Ellingson as the Saints trimmed DSU's lead to 8-3.
Wieneke led off the sixth inning with a bunt single and advanced to second base by PC's defensive error for the Trojans. He scored after the Saints committed a pair of wild pitches, extending DSU's lead to 9-3.
Dakota State added three more runs in the top sixth frame as their lead grew to 12-3, highlighted by back-to-back doubles by Davis and Halstead.
PC plated one run in the bottom sixth inning after Drew Sanders hit an RBI double to reduce their deficit to 12-4.
The Trojans scored once in the final inning for a 13-4 lead. Entrikin hit a two-out double. Farley produced an RBI single to score Ross Kortan – pinch runner for Entrikin – to increase DSU's lead to nine runs.
Presentation went three-and-out in the bottom seventh inning, securing Trojans' third straight NSAA conference victory.
Entrikin was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, double and two RBIs for Dakota State. Davis added two doubles, a single and produced two RBIs. Barker had a hit and tallied three RBIs. Flahie recorded a double and single. Halstead earned a double, single and two RBIs. Serrata and Wieneke each had a hit.
Serrata and Davis each scored three runs for the Trojans. Flahie had two runs.
Segula, Weinhoff, Morris and Sanders each had a double for the Saints. Ellingson, Hofman and Wolf each had a single. Morris, Sanders and Segula each recorded an RBI.
DSU had five doubles in the game compared to PC four doubles.
Trojan Mitch Bouchard (3-2) earned the victory as he recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings on the mound. He allowed four runs (one unearned) on seven hits. Lopiparo tossed 1 1/3 shutout innings in relief.
Jake Bunjovac (2-2) recorded the loss for the Saints. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up eight runs (two unearned) on six hits. Kyle McLean came in for 4 1/3 innings in relief and allowed four runs (one unearned) on four hits. Adam McFarland pitched for 1 1/3 innings, giving up one run on three hits.
The Trojans had 13 hits in the game. PC recorded seven hits.
Presentation had five runners left on base. DSU had four runners left on base.
Dakota State and Presentation conclude their regular-season action on Saturday at Fossum Field in Aberdeen, S.D. They will play the NSAA Baseball four-game series finale with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
