SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Dakota State University outdoor track & field teams competed at the 89th Annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays Friday, which featured numerous participants from the Midwest area from all levels in the two-day premier event.
Ryan Gimbel broke a new DSU school record in the men's hammer throw. He threw a measurement of 144 feet, 3 inches for an 11th-place finish, improving his previous personal and school record of 142 feet, 10 inches set in 2013. Trevor Van Tilburg added a personal record of 129 feet, 3 inches for an 18th-place finish. His measurement is also the fourth best hammer throw in the DSU school record.
Van Tilburg was 20th in the men's discus with a measurement of 123 feet, 10 inches. Gimbel was 21st (122 feet).
The Trojan men's 4 x 100-meter relay – consisting of teammates D'Artist Williams, Spencer Carlson, Trevor Jacobsen and Marty Hargrove – earned a third-place finish with a time of 42.21 seconds. The time is also the third fastest time in the DSU men's outdoor track & field school record and just .22 seconds short for producing a national qualifying mark.
Jacobsen, Hargrove and Williams were the top three DSU runners in the men's 200-meter dash second heat. Jacobsen clocked a time of 22.58 seconds for a 20th-place overall, followed by Hargrove with a time of 22.68 for a 22nd place overall. Williams was 24th with a time of 22.72 seconds. Carlson placed 27th in 22.77 seconds. David Sotir was 42nd with a time of 23.53 seconds.
In the men's 800-meter dash, Mark Moeller won the second heat with a time of one minute and 56.24 seconds. His time was a new personal record and finished 13th overall. Jared Sutton added a 34th-place finish with a time of 2:01.06. Claudio Tejada was 37th in 2:03.34. Jared Truman earned a personal record with a time of 2:08.81 for a 43rd-place finish.
Michael Hoffman ran a time of 16:22.31 to earn an 11th-place finish in the men's 5000-meter run, setting a new personal record time. Michael Carson clocked a time of 17:34.97 to finish 17th. Taylor Hauge was 19th in 17:42.23. Caleb Hemphill placed 24th in 18:16.82.
Ashley Currey was 18th in the women's hammer throw. She threw a measurement of 133 feet, 4 inches.
Clara Schild earned a 24th place finish in the women's shot put with a measurement of 35 feet, 11.25 inches. Currey placed 25th (34 feet, 3 inches), followed by Kylie Martin 26th place finish (34 feet, 1.25 inche). Kelci Viesselman threw a measurement of 31 feet, 10 inches for a 28th-place finish.
Sopko was 30th in the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:32.60. Sveen was 37th in 2:36.36.
Former DSU All-American runner Matt Fideler captured the men's 3000-meter steeplechase. He recorded a time of 9:14.15 to claim the individual title.
Dakota State continues their action on the second day of the 89th Annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays Saturday. First event is slated for 9 a.m. in Sioux Falls.
