MAYVILLE, N.D. - The Dakota State University baseball team played their first road four-game DAC series Saturday and Sunday at the Veterans Memorial Field. Dakota State splits with Mayville State on Saturday as the Comets took the first game 4-2 and the Trojans won the second game 6-4. On Sunday, Mayville State swept the Trojans 4-3 and 12-2.
Dakota State's overall record is currently 18-14 and 8-4 in the DAC. Mayville State is 19-15 overall and 8-4 in the conference.
Game One - Box Score
Mayville State 4, Dakota State 2
After a scoreless first inning, the Comets scored twice in the bottom of the second inning caused by Trojans' two defensive errors.
Trojan Brian White recorded two stolen bases in the top of the third inning. He scored on a wild pitch to cut the Comets' lead to 2-1.
Mark Kuzyk hit 2-RBI single to score Spencer Braun and Joe McLain to extend the Comets' lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Donald Strand hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Chaz Palmer (courtesy runner for Jose Figueroa) to trim Mayville State's lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Trojans were unable to rally in the final innings.
Zane Roduner and Bob Olson each had two singles for Dakota State. Figueroa added a single.
McLanin recorded a double for the Comets. Kuzyk, Alex Berry, Braun and McLain each had a single.
Dakota State left 10 runners on base. Mayville State had eight runners left on base.
Lincoln Gassman (4-3) suffered the loss on the mound for Dakota State. He tossed eight innings and allowed four runs (two unearned) on four hits. He struck out four batters.
Sam Hirchert (5-3) recorded the win for Mayville State. He pitched 8 1/3 innings and gave up two runs (one unearned) on five hits. He struck out 11 batters. Zack Schaefer recorded the save in 2/3 shutout innings in relief.

Dakota State 6, Mayville State 4
Chance Hargrove hit 2-run home run to score Josh Tiede to give Dakota State a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Kuzyk scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first inning to cut the Trojans' lead to 2-1.
Roduner opened the top of the fourth inning with a double. Chad Hunt hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Roduner to put the Trojans up 3-1.
The Comets scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 3-3. McLain hit 2-RBI double to score Braun and Schaefer.
Derek Howerton hit an RBI double to score Kuzyk as the Comets' grabbed their first lead in the second game, 4-3.
Dakota State responded with three runs scored in the top of the sixth inning. Pinch hitters Ryan Bouricer and Garrett Gassman recorded back-to-back singles with two outs. Chad Hunt reached on base by hit-by-pitch to set up a bases-loaded situation for the Trojans. Figueroa reached on base by bases-on-balls to score Olson to tie the game at 4-4. Tiede added an RBI single to score Ryan Steffensen and Hargrove added an RBI walk to score Hunt to extend the Trojans' lead to 6-4.
Mayville State left three runners in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Trojans' defense held on to secure the win.
Hargrove went 1-for-2 with a home run, two walks and recorded three RBIs for DSU. Tiede and Roduner each had a double and a single. Hunt, Figueora and Tiede each had one RBI.
For Mayville State, McLain and Howerton each had a single. McLain went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Kuzyk, Braun and Schaefer each had a hit.
Jared Donahue (3-2) pitched 5 2/3 innings in victory for the Trojans. He allowed four runs on five hits. He struck out nine batters and leads the nation with 75 strikeouts. Nick Mutz recorded his sixth save of the season as he shut down the Comets. He allowed no runs on one hit and struck out two batters.
Heath Lee started on the mound for Mayville State. He allowed four runs (one unearned) on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Josh Drews came in and allowed one run on one hit. Schaefer (3-3) suffered the loss as he gave up two walks and one run on one hit. Matthew Mueller closed the game in 1 1/3 innings.

Hunt hit his first home run of the season in the top of the first inning as the Trojans grabbed an early 1-0 lead.
Steffensen added a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning to extend DSU's lead to 2-0.
The Trojans added another run in the top of the eighth inning by Hargrove's RBI single to score Hunt.
With bases loaded and two out situation, the Comets recorded four straight walks to score four runs. Mayville State completed a comeback and defeated the Trojans 4-3.
Hunt went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI for Dakota State. Hargrove and Roduner each had two hits. Hargrove and Steffensen each recorded an RBI.
For the Comets, Schaefer went 2-for-3 with a double, one run scored and an RBI. Kuzyk and Jake McLain each had a single.
Jerod Burleson pitched 8 2/3 strong innings for DSU. He gave up three runs on four hits. He struck out six batters. Mutz (4-2) suffered the loss for the Trojans. He allowed four walks and on run.
Sheldon Jones (3-0) recorded the victory for Mayville State. He pitched a complete game and allowed three runs on seven hits. He struck out nine batters.
Game Two - Box Score
Mayville State 12, Dakota State 2 (5 innings)
Mayville State scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Braun hit an RBI single to score Howerton.
Dakota State tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning. Hunt recorded an RBI single to score Olson.
Berry hit an RBI single to score Joe McLain in the bottom of the third inning to regain their lead at 2-1.
DSU's Olson hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Palmer (courtesy runner for Figueroa) to the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning.
Howerton hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the Comets up 3-2.
Mayville State scored nine times in the bottom of the fifth inning and ended the game by ten-run mercy rule.
Hargrove had a double for the Trojans. Hunt, Max Garza and Strand each recorded a single. Olson and Hunt each had an RBI.
Alex Berry went 2-for-3 with a double, a single and recorded four RBIs for Mayville State. Howerton went perfect behind the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run and two runs scored.
Josh Caven (1-1) suffered the loss for the Trojans. He tossed four innings and allowed six runs (one unearned) on six hits. Brandon Womack pitched 2/3 inning and allowed six unearned runs on two hits. Nick Bird closed the game DSU.
Andy Stone (2-2) recorded the victory for Mayville State. He pitched four innings and allowed two unearned runs on four hits. Josh Drews pitched one inning of relief.
Dakota State will conclude their nine-game stretch on the road next weekend. The Trojans will travel to Jamestown, N.D. to face Jamestown College in a four-game DAC series.
