MADISON, S.D. – The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) has selected Rachel Hughes of Dakota State (S.D.) as its Softball Pitcher-of-the-Week. The final edition of the softball's weekly honors were announced Monday.
Hughes, 5-foot-6 pitcher/outfield for the Trojans, pitched two games in the NAIA Softball Unaffiliated NSAA/Frontier Conference Postseason Tournament last weekend in Jamestown, N.D. The Trojans went 2-2 record in the postseason qualifying tournament, finishing as the top NSAA place-finisher.
In the opening round versus top-seeded and eventual postseason champions Dickinson State (N.D.) on Friday, May 2, Hughes came in for 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief work. She gave up two hit and struck out three Blue Hawks' batters.
Hughes extended her scoreless innings to 7 2/3 innings as she started in the loser's out game versus No. 5 seed Presentation (S.D.). She earned the victory in the circle as she tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits. She recorded five strikeouts.
During the postseason tournament, Hughes pitched a total of eight innings and gave up one run on five hits. She struck out a total of eight batters and only drew one walk. Hughes produced an earned runs average of 0.88 in the tournament.
Rachel (Sioux Falls Washington High School graduate) is the daughter of Don and Colleen Hughes of Sioux Falls, S.D. She is a freshman Math Education major at Dakota State University.
Dakota State went on to upset NSAA regular-season conference champions and No. 2 seed Valley City State (N.D.) 3-2 in another loser's out game on Saturday, May 3. The Trojans fell short to No. 4 seed Great Falls (Mont.) 5-0 for a spot in the championship game.
DSU completed their 2014 season with an overall record of 12-32 and 5-9 in NSAA conference play. The Trojans finished third in the postseason conference qualifying tournament.
