MADISON, S.D. – The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) has announced its softball postseason awards Monday afternoon. Shortstop Samantha Mitchell of Dakota State (S.D.) was selected as NSAA Softball Freshman-of-the-Year award, voted by the league's coaches.
Mitchell, who was also named to the first-ever NSAA All-Conference as an At-Large selection Monday, had a stellar freshman year as she led the team in five different offensive categories. She led the team with .412 batting average (47-of-114 at the plate), 11 home runs, 37 runs batted in (RBIs), .842 slugging percentage and 96 total bases. In addition, she had six doubles and five triples. She recorded a perfect 17-for-17 in stolen bases situation.
According to the DakStats-NAIA Statistical website as of Monday, Mitchell ranks 11th in the nation in slugging percentage and 21st in home runs per game (0.3). She also ranks 27th in the nation in total triples. She is 31st in total bases per game (2.3), total home runs and triples per game (0.1).
Mitchell recorded 98 total assists defensively for the Trojans, ranking her 37th in the nation in assists per game with an average of 2.4 assists.
Samantha is the daughter of Matthew and Chelease DeBartolo of Buckley, wash. She majors in Exercise Science at Dakota State University.
