MITCHELL, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to earn a victory on the second day of the Corn Palace Classic Saturday, hosted by Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.). The Trojans dropped two matches to North Star Athletic Association conference foe Valley City State (N.D.) and Johnson & Wales (Colo.).
Dakota State fell to 4-4 overall record.
Valley City State (N.D.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL
Dakota State fell short to NSAA foe Valley City State in the first match of the day. The Trojans won the opening set by the score of 25-22, while VCSU tied up at 1-1 after taking the second set 25-21.
DSU won the third set by the score of 25-17. VCSU earned 25-19 victory in the fourth set to force the fifth and deciding set.
The Trojans jumped to an 8-4 lead in the fifth set, but was unable to close the match. Trailing 10-7, VCSU used an 8-3 scoring run to secure the match with a 15-13 fifth set victory.
Katherine Gonzalez earned 19 digs for the Trojans. Rozell had 16 digs. Westby recorded 13 digs.
Gonzalez and Vander Wal each had three service aces for Dakota State. Rozell had two service aces.
Alley Theroux tallied 19 kills for VCSU. Jodi Wilde added 13 kills. Barbara Ector had 10 kills. Stephanie Miller recorded 33 assists.
Jen Wettstein had a match-high 24 digs for the Vikings. Miller added 18 digs.
VCSU outhit DSU 51-49 in the match. The Trojans committed 28 attack errors while the Vikings had 24 attack errors.
DSU had 10 service aces compared to the Vikings' 7 service aces. The Trojans recorded eight blocks while VCSU had five blocks.
Johnson & Wales (Colo.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL
Dakota State was unable to close out the tournament with a victory after taking the opening set (25-17) against Johnson & Wales (Colo.). The Wildcats won the next three sets by the scores of 25-14, 28-26 and 25-20.
Tessa Weeldreyer smashed nine kills for the Trojans. Rozell had eight kills and Pick seven kills. Vander Wal produced 20 assists. Westby had 12 assists.
Gonzalez registered 16 digs for DSU. Rozell added 11 digs and Allison Thielsen had nine digs.
Danica Lawrence earned a match-high 15 kills for the Wildcats. Demi Coca added 11 kills. Kelley McLain had 10 kills.
Karli Rich and Alaina McClure each had 23 assists.
Mackenzie Zimmerman had 18 digs. Rich added 12 digs.
Braeden Gilbert recorded three service aces.
JWU outhit DSU 64-42 in the match.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they kick off their three-match home stand on Wednesday. The Trojans welcome in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference. There will be a junior varsity match at 6 p.m., followed by a varsity match at 7:30 p.m. The matches will be at the DSU Fieldhouse.
