MADISON, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) outscored Dakota State (S.D.) 46-26 in the final twenty minutes of the game gain a 86-59 non-conference victory at DSU Fieldhouse Saturday evening.  The Tigers shot 51.4 percent from the field in the second-half, while the Trojans were held to 30.8 percent shooting.  DWU never trailed in the game.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 1-1.  It was the season-opening game for Dakota Wesleyan, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  Both teams are receiving votes in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Preseason Poll.

At 19-18, the Tigers used an 8-0 scoring to grab a 27-18 lead with less than seven minutes before halftime.  During that scoring run, Jalen Voss nailed down a lay-up along with a pair of 3-pointers from Kris Menning for DWU.

The Trojans answered back with an 8-0 run to trim DWU's lead to 27-26 with 5:23 remaining in the first-half.  DSU made three baskets by three different players during their scoring run – two by Taylor Zirbel and a field goal by Seth Cavanaugh and Bryant Allen.

After DWU made a 10-point lead at 40-30 with 44 seconds left in the first-half, Adam Hofer nailed down a three-pointer as DSU cut the Tigers' lead to 40-33 at halftime.

Dakota Wesleyan shot 42.9 percent from the field, making 15 baskets in 35 attempts in the first-half.  Dakota State was 40 percent from the field (14-of-35).  The Tigers were 5-for-15 from the 3-point arc (33.3 percent) while the Trojans were 1-for-4 from the 3-point line (25 percent).

DWU kicked off the second-half by going 3-for-3 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line in their 10-0 spurt, extending their lead to 50-33 with 17:39 remaining in the game.

DSU could get no closer than 11 points at 54-43 with 14:13 left as DWU maintained their double-digits lead for the rest of the game.

The Tigers were 18-for-35 from the field in the second-half compared to the Trojans 8-for-26.

Bryant Allen came off the bench with 16 points for the Trojans.  Brendon Boomsma added 11 points.  Zirbel scored seven points.  Hofer and Ian Barse each had six points.

Miguel Sansasvour grabbed eight rebounds for DSU.  Boomsma and Zirbel each had four rebounds.

Boomsma dished out three assists for Dakota State.  Nathaniel Rauen and Allen each had two assists.

Zirbel had two blocked shots for the Trojans.  Sansavour and Barse each recorded a blocked shot.

Menning scored a game-high 23 points for DWU.  Voss added 22 points on his 10-for-21 shooting from the field.  Trae Bergh recorded 16 points.

Voss led the Tigers with eight rebounds.  Jade Miller had seven rebounds.  Bergh and Menning each had six rebounds.

Joey Mitchell produced five assists for Dakota Wesleyan.  Voss, Bergh, Menning and Terrell Newton each had four assists.

Bergh stole the ball three times for the Tigers.  Newton had two steals.

Bergh recorded two blocked shots for DWU.  Voss, Bamberg and Menning each had a blocked shot.

DWU shot 47.1 percent overall from the field (33-for-70) compared to DSU 22-for-61 (36.1 percent).  The Tigers drained 11 3-pointers in 28 attempts (39.3 percent), while the Trojans were 4-for-12 from the 3-point arc.

Dakota State went to the free-throw line 14 times, making 11 free-throws (78.6 percent).  Dakota Wesleyan was 9-for-12 free-throws (75 percent).

DWU outrebounded DSU 46-31, including 16-9 on offensive boards.  DWU outscored DSU 15-9 in second-chance points.

The Tigers dished out 24 assists compared to the Trojans 10 assists.

Both teams had 12 turnovers in the game.

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column Tuesday evening as they conclude their three-game home stand.  The Trojans host another team from the GPAC, Dordt (Iowa).  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. or 25 minutes after the completion of the Lady T's-Dordt game at DSU Fieldhouse.
