DES MOINES, Iowa – The Dakota State University men's basketball team continued their challenging non-conference schedule Saturday afternoon, facing a third team that is nationally recognized in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Preseason poll.  The Trojans earned a five-point halftime lead, but could not overcome Grand View's second-half runs as the Vikings held on to a 74-70 victory at Sisam Arena.

Dakota State, which also received votes recognition in the national poll, dropped to 1-3 overall record.  Grand View earned their first victory of the season, lifting their overall record to 1-2.

The Trojans and Vikings went through five lead changes and two ties in the first nine minutes and 44 seconds of the game.  Leading 12-11, the Trojans went on a 6-0 scoring run (including two free throws each by Derek Meger and Adam Hofer and a lay-up by Taylor Zirbel) to extend their lead to 18-11 with 7:02 left before intermission

DSU held a 26-21 halftime lead.  The Trojans shot 32.1 percent from the field in the first-half (9-of-28) compared to the Vikings 32 percent (8-of-25).

After a pair of free-throws by Meger to put DSU up 36-28, Grand View stormed with an 18-0 scoring explosion – all by six 3-pointers (4 by Chase Mullen and 2 by Nathan Washington) – in a span of less than three minutes to regain their lead at 46-36 with 13:30 remaining.

The Trojans answered back with an 11-2 scoring run to trim Vikings' lead at 48-47 after Brendon Boomsma's 3-pointer with 10:22 left in the game.

Bryant Allen hit a jumper with 4:38 left in the game as Dakota State tied the game at 61-61.

The Vikings closed the game by outscoring the Trojans 13-9 in the final 4:38.

Grand View outscored Dakota State 53-44 in the final twenty minutes of the game.  GV drained 10 3-pointers in the second-half, while DSU had five 3-pointers.

The Vikings shot 61.5 percent from the field in the second-half (16-of-26), while the Trojans were 12-for-28 from the field (42.9 percent).

Allen led the Trojans with 22 points.  Meger added 14 points.  Boomsma scored 13 points off the bench.  Miguel Sansavour and Zirbel each scored seven points.

Seth Cavanaugh earned eight rebounds for DSU.  Meger added six rebounds. 

Allen dished out three assists for Dakota State.  Cavanaugh added two assists. 

Mullen scored 26 points off the bench for the Vikings.  He shot 8-for-11 from the field, including 6-for-8 from the 3-point arc and went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.  Juan Hadnot added 11 points.  Sam Skogen had 10 points.

Hadnot pulled down six rebounds for Grand View.  Rodney Williams added five rebounds.

Williams and Darian Bostic each had three assists. 

Grand View shot 47.1 percent overall from the field (24-of-51) compared to Dakota State 37.5 percent (21-of-56).  The Vikings made 13 3-pointers in 29 attempts (44.8 percent), while the Trojans were 6-of-19 from the 3-point line (31.6 percent).

DSU nailed down 22 free-throws in 29 attempts (75.9 percent).  GV was 13-of-23 from the free-throw line (56.5 percent).

The Trojans outrebounded the Vikings 31-25.

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column Tuesday as they face Northwestern (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  Tip-off from the DSU Fieldhouse is set for 7 p.m.
