MADISON, S.D. – Trailing by four points at halftime (41-37) Saturday evening at DSU Fieldhouse, Dakota State (S.D.) outscored Mayville State (N.D.) 34-20 in the final twenty minutes of the game to gain a 71-61 North Star Athletic Association men's basketball conference victory at DSU Fieldhouse.  It was the sixth straight victory for the Trojans and seventh win in the last eight games (7-1 record in the month of January).

Dakota State returned back to .500 with an overall record of 11-11.  DSU's victory, coupled with No. 24-ranked Jamestown's (N.D.) 79-55 loss at Presentation (S.D.) tonight, earned a sole possession for first-place in the NSAA conference standings with a 4-0 record.  Mayville State dropped to 12-9 overall record and winless in four NSAA conference games. 

It was the fourth straight home victory for the Trojans.  The last time DSU had a six-game winning streak was from Nov. 10, 2012 through Dec. 1, 2012.  DSU had won the last eight meetings with Mayville State.

The Trojans opened up by scoring three straight points from Derek Meger in the first 1:03 of the game (3-0 DSU lead).

Mayville State earned their first lead of the game at 10-9 with 12:46 remaining.

Both teams traded leads nine times and recorded three ties in the first-half before the Comets made a late first-half run.  Trailing 32-30, MSU went on an 8-0 run to grab a 38-32 lead with 1:46 left before intermission.

DSU's Cameron Robinson hit a 3-pointer just seconds before the first-half expired, trimming Mayville State's lead to 41-37 by halftime.

The Comets shot 53.1 percent from the field in the first-half (17-of-32) compared to the Trojans 12-of-30 field goals (40 percent). 

Dakota State held Mayville State scoreless in the first 8:15 of the second-half, allowing the Trojans climb back with a 48-41 lead (12:31 remaining on the clock) after using an 11-0 run.  The Comets missed seven shots and committed five turnovers during the scoring drought.

MSU ended their scoreless drought with a basket by Jordan Villebrun with 11:45 left in the game.  The Comets would continue their scoring run (7-0 run) to tie the game at 48-48 with 8:30 remaining.

The Trojans answered back with an 8-0 run to take a 56-48 lead with 5:11 left. 

Mayville State would cut DSU's lead to 56-52, but the Trojans secured the game by outscoring the Comets 15-9 in the final 3:53 of the game.

DSU was 37.5 percent from the field (12-of-32) in the second-half.  MSU only made nine baskets in 23 attempts and committed 10 turnovers in the last twenty minutes of the game.

Bryant Allen led the Trojans with 22 points.  He was 6-of-13 from the field and went perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line.  Ian Barse scored 19 points off the bench.  Meger had 12 points (5-of-10 field goals).  Taylor Zirbel, Adam Hofer and Robinson each had six points.

Meger earned eight rebounds for Dakota State.  Robinson and Barse each had six rebounds.  Zirbel recorded five rebounds and two blocked shots. 

Allen and Robinson each dished out three assists for DSU.  Meger and Brendon Boomsma each added two assists.  Hofer had two steals.

A.B. Najee scored 12 points for the Comets.  Garek Droog tallied 11 points off the bench.  Jamal Branco and Darnell Landon each had nine points.

Chuck Robinson had seven points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Mayville State.  Branco had six rebounds and produced five assists.

MSU shout 47.3 percent overall from the field (26-of-55) compared to DSU 38.7 percent (24-of-62).  Both teams drained five 3-poiners in the game.

Dakota State went to the free-throw line 23 times, making 18 free-throws (78.3 percent).  Mayville State was 4-of-6 free-throws (66.7 percent).

MSU outrebounded DSU 35-32 in the game. 

Dakota State remains home Wednesday evening as they host Jamestown to conclude the first-half portion of the NSAA conference schedule.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse in the annual Coaches versus Cancer (White-Out Night).

Mayville State returns home Wednesday versus Valley City State (N.D.) in the NSAA conference action at 7:30 p.m.
