MAYVILLE, N.D. – After Dakota State (S.D.) earned a one-point halftime lead Wednesday evening at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse, Mayville State (N.D.) outscored the Trojans 39-29 in the second-half for a 71-62 North Star Athletic Association men's basketball conference victory.  MSU shot 50 percent from the field in the final twenty minutes while holding DSU to 31.3 percent shooting.

Dakota State dropped to 12-13 overall record.  With Jamestown (N.D.) home loss to Presentation (S.D.) Wednesday, DSU remains in tie for first-place with a 5-2 NSAA conference record with UJ and PC.  Mayville State, who is on a current four-game home stand, won their third straight game to raise their overall record to 15-9 and 3-4 NSAA record (sole possession for fourth place in the standings).

The Trojans and Comets went through almost the entire half by tying the game six times and trading leads nine times with no lead bigger than three points.

Trailing 25-24, DSU went on a 9-3 scoring run to earn the biggest lead of the first-half at 33-27 with 1:02 left before halftime.

MSU answered back by closing the first-half by scoring five straight points in the final 43 seconds, trimming DSU's lead at 33-32 by intermission.

The Trojans shot 48.3 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes of the game (14-of-29) compared to the Comets 41.2 percent shooting (14-of-34).

Dakota State kicked off the second-half by making two straight baskets by Derek Meger and Bryant Allen, extending their lead to 37-32 with 17:57 remaining.

Mayville State exploded back with a 19-7 run to earn the largest lead of the game at 51-39 with 11:06 left.

The Trojans answered with a 15-5 scoring spurt to trim MSU's lead to 56-54 with 5:36 remaining.  It was the Comets that held their lead for the rest of the game, closing the game with a 15-8 run.

MSU shot 14-of-28 from the field in the second-half, while the Trojans struggled from the field by making 10 baskets in 32 attempts.

Allen had a game-high 20 points for Dakota State.  He was 8-of-17 from the field and 4-of-9 from the 3-point line.  Brendon Boomsma came off the bench with nine points (3-of-7 field goals with 3-of-4 from the 3-point arc).  Nathaniel Rauen scored eight points off the bench with a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the field.  Meger and Miguel Sansavour each added six points.

Robinson pulled down 11 rebounds for the Trojans.  Adam Hofer added six boards. 

Hofer dished out four assists and recorded three steals for DSU.  Taylor Zirbel and Robinson each had three assists.

Chuck Robinson and A.B. Najee each scored 14 points for the Comets.  Jamal Branco had 13 points and seven assists.

Michael Lindsey earned 11 rebounds for MSU.  Robinson had six rebounds and recorded two blocked shots.

Mayville State shot 45.2 percent overall from the field (28-of-62) compared to Dakota State 39.3 percent (24-of-61).  Both teams made 8 3-pointers in the game.

MSU was 7-of-10 free-throws while DSU was 6-of-10 from the free-throw line.

The Comets outrebounded the Trojans 41-30.

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they return home Saturday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans host Valley City State (N.D.) in NSAA conference action.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in Madison, S.D.
