TUCSON, Ariz. –  Briar Cliff (Iowa) outscored Dakota State (S.D.) 15-2 after a 2-2 tie score in the first inning Monday morning at the Kino Sports Complex as part of Tucson (Ariz.) Baseball Invitational.  It was a nine-inning game for both teams.

The Trojans fell to 0-8 overall record.  BCU improved their overall record to 4-3.

Briar Cliff scored twice in the opening inning of the game, highlighted by Scott Morton's RBI triple.  Darnell Wilson added an RBI single to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead.

DSU answered back to tie the game in the bottom first frame.  Nathan Wieneke opened with a double, followed by Tony Poncia's single (Wieneke advanced to third).  Ian Barker hit an RBI double to score Wieneke for Trojans' first run of the game (Poncia advanced to third base).  Jordan Entrikin added an RBI (ground out) to score Poncia as Dakota State tied the game at 2-2.

The Chargers produced five hits and scored twice in the top second inning, extending their lead to 4-2.

Adam Alexander recorded a 3-RBI triple and the Chargers added another run as they expanded their lead to 8-2 in the third inning.

Briar Cliff's offense exploded for seven runs in the top half of the fifth inning, thanks to Jory Boynton's 2-RBI double and Branden Amenta's 2-RBI triple.  The Chargers' lead grew to 15-2 by the end of the fifth inning.

The Trojans snapped their scoring drought with two runs scored in the bottom sixth frame.  Jake Harris and Barker started off with back-to-back singles for DSU.  Harris and Barker both advanced one base caused by BCU's wild pitch.  Entrikin produced another RBI to score Harris and Nick Serrata added an RBI single to score Barker, trimming Chargers' lead to 15-4.

BCU scored once in the top eighth and ninth innings to secure the victory.

Barker was 3-of-5 at the plate for the Trojans with a double, two singles and produced an RBI.  Wieneke added a double.  Poncia, Harris, Jon Forster, Ricardo Chagollan, Serrata and JD Farley each had a hit.  Entrikin collected two RBIs.  Serrata had an RBI.

Alexander and Boynton each had three hits and three RBIs for the Chargers.  Logan Adam also had three hits.  Carter Ludwig, Morton, Wilson, and Amenta each had a pair of hits.

Taylor Boerger (0-2) recorded the pitching loss for Dakota State.  He worked for two-plus innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits.  Brady Wauer pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief and gave up six runs (one unearned) on five hits.  Danny Lopiparo worked for 3 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on three hits.  He recorded six strikeouts.  Lincoln Gassman pitched the ninth inning, yielding one run on two hits.

Dylan Hannah (2-0) earned the victory on the pitching mound for Briar Cliff.  He pitched five innings and allowed two runs on five hits.  Hannah struck out seven DSU's batters.  Luke Lindsey worked for 1 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on three hits.  Justin Mauro pitched two scoreless innings, giving up two hits.  Brazis Horak worked for the final out of the game.

BCU outhit DSU 21-10 in the game.  Both teams left nine runners on base.

Dakota State continues their action in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Tuesday.  The Trojans play a doubleheader versus Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) with a 4 p.m. starting time.
