TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dakota State University baseball team played their final doubleheader in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational at the Kino Sports Complex Thursday.  The Trojans fell short to NAIA's Independent member Antelope Valley (Calif.) in a doubleheader sweep by the scores of 6-5 and 8-2.

Dakota State fell to 2-10 overall record.  Antelope Valley raised their overall record to 12-14.

Game 1 – Antelope Valley (Calif.) 6, Dakota State (S.D.) 5 – FINAL

The Trojans fell behind 4-0 in the first two innings, but were able to rally back and tie the game in the seventh inning.  However, the Pioneers were able to pull out with a victory with a game-winning run in the bottom seventh by the score of 6-5.

UVA scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings to gain a 4-0 lead.

DSU broke their scoring drought with two runs in the top third frame.  Tyler Ratkie opened the inning with a walk.  Ian Barker hit a single to advance Ratkie to second base.  Ricardo Chagollan reached on base by a fielder's choice and Ratkie was out at third (Barker was reached safely at second).  A wild pitch by Pioneers advanced Barker to third and Chagollan to second.  Nick Serrata produced a 2-RBI single to score Barker and Chagollan as Dakota State cut UVA's lead to 4-2.

Antelope Valley scored a run in the bottom fifth to extend their lead to 5-2.

After two outs in the top sixth inning, DSU's Ryan Schlesser was hit-by-pitch.  A wild pitch by UVA advanced Schlesser to second base.  Jake Harris, pinch hitting for Anthony Martinez, hit an RBI single to score Schlesser as the Trojans reduced their deficit to 5-3.

Dakota State rallied back to tie the game with two runs scored in the top seventh inning.  Barker led off with a single.  Chagollan reached on base by Pioneers' defensive error and advanced Barker to second.  Serrata added a single to set up a bases loaded situation with one out.

Dylan Deckert recorded an RBI single to score Barker, followed by Schlesser's RBI ground out to score to score Chagollan as the Trojans tied the game at 5-5. 

Jonathon Ruiz kicked off the bottom seventh inning with a double for the Pioneers.  The Trojans gave UVA's next two batters – Koa Matson and Jonas Wellan – intentional walks for a bases loaded situation.  Nycholas Bongiovanni hit an RBI sacrifice fly to seal the victory (scored Ayrton Costa, pinch runner for Ruiz).

Barker was 3-of-4 at the plate with two runs scored for the Trojans.  Nathan Wieneke, Serrata and Deckert each had two singles.  Schlesser and Harris each had a hit and an RBI.  Serrata had two RBIs.

Wellan was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, single and an RBI for the Pioneers.  Nicholas Ridio added a triple and a single.  Whaylan Price, Jacob Gonzales, Ruiz, Matson and Bongiovanni each had a hit.

Dakota State outhit Antelope Valley 11-10 in the game.  The Trojans left 10 runners on base while the Pioneers had eight runners left on base.

Zac Smith started the game for the Trojans.  He went 2 2/3 innings and allowed four runs (two unearned) on seven hits.  Jamie Jorgensen (0-1) took the loss after working 3 2/3 innings in relief.  He gave up two runs on three hits.

Travis Holm pitched the first three innings in the game for the Pioneers.  He allowed two runs on four hits.  Julio Rivera worked for 2 2/3 innings in relief, yielding one run on three hits.  Neal White (2-0) earned the victory as he worked for 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one unearned) on four hits.

Game 2 – Antelope Valley (Calif.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL

The Pioneers completed a doubleheader sweep over the Trojans, outscoring 6-1 in the final two innings of the game after holding a slim 2-1 lead.

Victor Barror hit an RBI single in the top second inning to give UVA first lead of the game at 1-0.

Antelope Valley made it 2-0 in the third inning after Julio Rivera hit an RBI double.

The Trojans snapped their scoreless drought with a run scored in the bottom fifth inning.  Wieneke started the inning with a walk.  Barker hit an RBI double with one out to score Wieneke to cut UVA's lead to 2-1.

UVA exploded for four runs in the top sixth frame to extend their lead to 6-1.  The Pioneers added a pair of runs in the top seventh inning to expand their lead to 8-1.

DSU scored once in the bottom seventh inning, but it was not enough for the Trojans to make a comeback.  Harris hit a double with one out.  Jordan Entrikin recorded an RBI single to score Harris to complete the final score at 8-2 in favor of the Pioneers.

Harris and Barker each had a double and a single for Dakota State.  Entrikin had a hit.  Jorgensen collected a single.  Barker and Entrikin each produced an RBI.

Rivera and Wellan was 3-for-4 at the plate for Antelope Valley.  Ruiz, Bongiovanni and Barron each had two hits.  Rivera, Bongiovanni and Barron each recorded two RBIs.

The Pioneers outhit the Trojans 13-6 in the game.  DSU left 10 runners on base while UVA had 6 runners left on base.

Bryant Westra (0-1) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He allowed two runs on six hits.  Martinez worked for 1 1/3 innings in relief, giving up four runs on three hits.  Danny Lopiparo pitched for two hits (gave up two runs on three hits).  Lincoln Gassman worked for one scoreless inning and allowed a hit.

Costa (4-1) notched the victory for the Pioneers.  He pitched five-plus innings and limited the Trojans to one run on four hits.  Neal White worked for the final two innings in relief and gave up one run on two hits.

Dakota State's next three games will consist of nine-inning game on three separate days.  The Trojans return to action Friday morning as they face Dordt (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference at Kino Sports Complex.
