TUCSON, Ariz. – Dakota State (S.D.) held a 3-0 lead after the third inning Saturday afternoon in the battle of former Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) foe Minot State (N.D.) at Kino Sports Complex as part of Tucson Invitational Games.  The Beavers went on to score eight unanswered runs and held off the Trojans' ninth-inning rally for an 8-5 victory.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 3-11.  Minot State, a member of NCAA Division II in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, improved to 3-6.

The Trojans grabbed the first lead of the game with three runs scored in the bottom third inning after scoreless two innings.  Nick Serrata and Jamie Jorgensen opened with back-to-back singles.  Nathan Wieneke recorded a bunt fielder's choice to advance Jorgensen to second (Serrata was out at third base).  Tyler Ratkie reached on base by Minot State's defensive error to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU.

Dakota State made it 2-0 after Jake Harris ripped a 2-RBI double to score Jorgensen and Wieneke.  Ratkie was out at home after Ian Barker hit a fielder's choice.  Jordan Entrikin recorded base-on-balls for another bases loaded situation for the Trojans.  Ricardo Chagollan was hit-by-pitch (RBI) to score Harris as DSU stretched their lead to 3-0.

MSU trimmed DSU's lead to 3-1 in the top fourth inning after Austin Berntson's RBI double.

Caleb Fornshell and Kyle Williamson recorded back-to-back RBI singles as the Beavers tied the game at 3-all in the top sixth inning.  The Trojans prevented Minot State from their first lead as DSU's Barker threw from right field to the catcher Entrikin on the same play when Williamson hit an RBI single.

Minot State broke the 3-3 tie into a 4-3 lead in the top seventh after the Trojans committed a defensive miscue.

The Beavers exploded for four runs in the top eighth inning as their lead increased to 8-3. 

DSU ended their five straight scoreless innings with a pair of runs scored in the final innings, but it was not enough as Minot State secured the victory.  Jorgensen hit a single with one out.  Ratkie added a double to advance Jorgensen to third baes.  Harris produced a 2-RBI single to score Jorgensen and Ratkie to complete the final score at 8-5.

Harris was 2-of-5 at the plate with a double, single and tallied a season-high four RBIs for the Trojans.  Ratkie added a double.  Serrata and Jorgensen each had two singles.  Barker had a hit.  Harris and Barker extended their hitting streak to seven straight games.  Chagollan recorded an RBI.

Jorgensen scored twice in the game for Dakota State.  Wieneke, Ratkie and Harris each scored once.

Williamson was 4-of-5 at the plate with four singles and an RBI for Minot State.  Brad Rolff had three hits.  Nick Hammerl earned two hits.  Jared Young, Keith Ailes, Berntson and Fornshell each had a hit.

The Beavers outhit the Trojans 13-8 in the game.  Minot State left 12 runners on base, while Dakota State had 9 runners left on base.

Garrison Collier started the game on the pitching mound for DSU.  He pitched five-plus innings and allowed two runs on six hits.  Danny Lopipario (0-1) recorded the loss in relief.  He worked for two innings and gave up two unearned runs on two hits.  Taylor Boerger pitched for two outs and allowed four runs on four hits.  David Novak worked for 1 1/3 innings, yielding MSU to one hit.

Zach Thompson pitched the first 2 2/3 innings for MSU.  He allowed three runs on three hits.  Mark LaCroix (1-0) earned the victory in relief as he worked for six innings – including five straight scoreless innings.  He gave up two runs on four hits.  LaCroix recorded seven strikeouts.  Doug Rolfson pitched the final out of the game, giving up a hit.

Dakota State wraps up the Tucson Invitational Games Sunday night as they play a nine-inning game versus Hastings (Neb.) at 8 p.m.
