GAME NOTES (PDF)

THIS WEEK:  The Dakota State University (S.D.) Trojan Baseball team (3-12 overall record) plays their 2015 home opener Thursday afternoon at Flynn Field on South Egan Avenue in downtown Madison, S.D.  The Trojans host their long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) (6-6) in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.  On Saturday and Sunday, DSU heads to Seward, Neb. for a four-game series with Concordia (Neb.) (10-6) at Plum Creek Park.  The doubleheaders are set to start at 1 p.m. on both days.

TUCSON (Ariz.) INVITATIONAL GAMES RECAP:  Dakota State (S.D.) completed their Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational' s 11-game schedule with a record of 3 wins and 8 losses.  The Trojans swept a doubleheader over Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) on March 10 by the scores of 11-3 and 3-1.  DSU added another victory on March 13 with a 9-5 10-inning thriller over Great Plains Athletic Conference's foe Dordt (Iowa).  The Trojans lost to Grace (Ind.), Briar Cliff (Iowa), Antelope Valley (Calif.) in a doubleheader, former Dakota Athletic Conference foe Minot State (N.D.) and Hastings (Neb.).

TROJANS RETURN HOME FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NEARLY TWO YEARS:  The Trojans will be playing their first home game in nearly two years on Thursday.  DSU was unable to play their home games in 2014 season due to weather and poor playing field conditions.  The last time Dakota State had played their home baseball game was on April 8, 2013 in a nine-inning game versus Morningside (Iowa).  The Trojans have scheduled a total of 19 home games this season at Flynn Field, including an 12-game slate versus members of the North Star Athletic Association conference (Valley City State on March 28-29, Dickinson State on April 3-4 and Presentation on April 25-26).

WEATHER FORECAST:  According to the weather forecast on www.weather.com (Weather Channel), the weather forecast in Madison, S.D. on Thursday calls for partly cloudy skies with a 55-degrees forecast high temperature.  The wind comes from the southwest from 10 to 20 miles-per hour.  This weekend in Seward, Neb. calls for dry conditions with sunny skies with the forecast highs in the 60's.  The winds are forecast for east-northeast on Saturday, switching to southeast on Sunday (both from 10 to 20 miles-per-hour range).

DSU VS. GPAC CONFERENCE:  Dakota State (S.D.) is 1-2 record against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference this season.  DSU lost to Briar Cliff (Iowa) 17-4 in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational on March 13, but earned a 9-5 10-inning thriller over Dordt (Iowa) on March 13.  The Trojans lost to Hastings (Neb.) to wrap up the Tucson Invitational Gams on March 15.  The Trojans will begin their eight-game stretch in the next seven days against GPAC foes, hosting Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Thursday, visiting Concordia (Neb.) in a four-game series this weekend and hosting Mount Marty (S.D.) on next Wednesday in a doubleheader at Flynn Field.

IT'S GONE:  A pair of Dakota State baseball players recorded their first home run of the season, both happened at the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational games.  Jordan Entrikin blasted a home run during the game versus Grace (Ind.) on March 6.  It was his second career home run during his two-year career at DSU.  Jamie Jorgensen smashed his first career home run at Dakota State versus Hastings (Neb.) on March 15. 

LAST TIME OUT:  Dakota State (S.D.) went 3-8 record during the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Games in Tucson, Ariz. from March 6 through March 15.  The Trojans posted a doubleheader sweep over Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) on March 10 and a 10-inning victory over Dordt (Iowa) on March 13.  Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) went 6-6 record in Tucson, including a 4-0 record against NSAA foes (swept Valley City State, N.D. on March 12 and Presentation, S.D. on March 13).  Concordia (Neb.) had won the last six games in the Tucson Invitational.  The Bulldogs posted a 5-1 record against members of the NSAA conference, splitting with Jamestown (N.D.) and recorded a doubleheader sweep over Presentation and Mayville State (N.D.).

LAST MEETING:  Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) swept Dakota State (S.D.) in a doubleheader last season played in Winner, S.D.  The Tigers posted the scores of 5-2 and 9-7 to compete a doubleheader sweep.  The last time DSU defeated DWU was on April 26, 2013 in a high scoring affair 18-14.  DSU hosted DWU at the Flynn Field on March 21, 2012 and the Trojans completed a doubleheader sweep over the Tigers 6-3 and 6-5.  Dakota State swept a pair of games last season at Concordia (Neb.), earning 9-5 and 6-5 victories in Seward, Neb. on March 23, 2014 in both teams' last meeting.

TEAM LEADERS:   Jake Harris leads Trojans' offense attack with 17 hits and records a batting average of .370.  He accumulates a total of 13 runs batted in (RBIs) and averages 1.1 RBIs per game for Dakota State.  Ian Barker swipes two bases (0.1 stolen bases per game).  He ranks third in the nation in total triples with three (13th in triples per game-0.2 triples per game).  Richard Sternberg records an earned run average of 5.09 (10 earned runs in 17 2/3 innings of work).  He leads the team pitching with 13 strikeouts (6.6 strikeouts per 9 inning).
