MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) hosted Valley City State (N.D.) in the North Star Athletic Association baseball conference opener Saturday afternoon at Flynn Field.  The Vikings won the first game by the score of 8-6, but the Trojans held on to win the second game 5-4 to earn a doubleheader split.

Dakota State is 5-20 overall record, while Valley City State is 17-14 overall record.  Both DSU and VCSU are 1-1 in the NSAA conference play.

Game 1 – Valley City State (N.D.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 6 – FINAL

Valley City State raced to 4-0 lead after opening up the game with four runs scored.  Tom Houdek hit a single with one out.  Joe Demers reached on base by a walk.  Nate Bagby produced a 2-RBI double to score Houdek and Demers as the Vikings grabbed the first lead at 2-0.  Mike Gershman added another RBI double to score Bagby to extend VCSU's lead to 3-0.  After DSU committed a defensive error (Gershman advanced to third), Jared Meiklejohn recorded a single to score Gershman for a four-run Vikings lead.

VCSU made it 5-0 in the top third inning after a defensive miscue committed by the Trojans.

Ian Barker led off the bottom third frame with a solo home run for Dakota State's first run of the game, cutting Vikings' lead to 5-1.  Jordan Entrikin was hit-by-pitch.  Jake Harris reached safely on base by VCSU's error (Entrikin advanced to second base).  Nick Serrata added a single to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans.

Tyler Ratkie recorded an RBI fielder's choice to score Entrikin, reducing DSU's deficit to 5-2 in the bottom third.  On the same play, Harris advanced to home after the Vikings committed a defensive error.  The Trojans trailed 5-3 by the end of the third inning.

The Vikings scored twice in the top fifth inning.  Bagby led off the inning with a single.  Gershman reached on base by a walk.  Brandon Welinski recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Bagby to third and Gershman to second.  Meiklejohn hit an RBI single to score Bagby as VCSU's lead grew to 6-3.  Valley City State made it 7-3 after Ben Bruenjes' RBI double to score Gershman.

Dakota State answered back with two runs scored in the bottom sixth frame.  Brady Wauer reached on base by a walk with one out.  JD Farley was hit-by-pitch to advance Wauer to second base.  A wild pitch by VCSU's David Whitaker advanced Wauer to third and Farley to second base.  Barker recorded an RBI single to score Wauer to cut Vikings' lead to 7-4.  Entrikin added another RBI single to score Farley as DSU's deficit decreased to 7-5.

Meiklejohn hit an RBI double to score Bagby, who opened the seventh inning with a walk, as VCSU's lead expanded to 8-5.

Harris blasted a solo home run to kick off the bottom seventh frame as DSU continued to trail at 8-6.  The Trojans were unable to complete a comeback as the Vikings closed the game three consecutive outs after the solo home run.

Baker and Harris each went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and single for Dakota State.  Entrikin added a double and single.  Serrata and Ryan Schlesser each recorded a single.  Barker produced two RBIs.  Entrikin, Harris and Tyler Ratkie each had an RBI.  Danny Lopiparo swiped one base.

Meiklejohn was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, two singles and collected three RBIs for Valley City State.  Welinski, Bagby and Houdek each added two hits.  Anthony Necochea, Gershman and Bruenjes each had a hit.  Bagby had two RBIs.  Gershman and Bruenjes each added an RBI.

VCSU outhit DSU 12-8 in the game.  The Vikings had five doubles, with apiece from Gershman, Bruenjes, Meiklejohn, Welinski and Bagby.

Both teams left seven runners on base.

Zac Smith (0-4) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for the Trojans.  He worked for 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs (two unearned) on ten hits.  Taylor Boerger tossed 2 2/3 innings in relief and gave up one run on two hits.

Whitaker (2-1) picked up the pitching victory for the Vikings.  He threw six innings and allowed four runs (one unearned) on seven hits.  Whitaker recorded six strikeouts.  Chip Rosales worked in the seventh inning for his first save of the season, giving up a run on one hit.

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 5, Valley City State (N.D.) 4 – FINAL

Trailing 1-0 in the second game of the doubleheader (nine-inning game), the Trojans went on a 5-0 run and held off the Vikings by the score of 5-4.

Valley City State grabbed the first lead of the game in the opening inning.  Joe Demers was hit-by-pitch with one out.  Jake Rambow hit an RBI double to score Demers for VCSU 1-0 lead.

Dakota State snapped their scoreless drought with three runs scored in the bottom third frame.  Farley was hit-by-pitch lead the bottom half of the inning, followed by Barker's walk.  A wild pitch by Viking Chad Leskiw advanced Farley to third and Barker to second base.  Entrikin reached on a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU.

After a double play by the Vikings in the bottom third which prevented the Trojans from scoring (and another out on first base), Harris came in for Dylan Deckert and hit a 3-run home run to score Barker and Lopiparo (courtesy runner for Entrikin) to give Dakota State a 3-1 lead.  It was the second home run in the same day for Harris.

DSU added a pair of runs in the bottom fifth inning.  Entrikin started with a walk for the Trojans.  Harris hit a double to advance Lopiparo, courtesy runner for Entrikin, to third base.  Serrata produced a 2-RBI single with two outs, scoring Lopiparo and Harris as Dakota State extended their lead to 5-1.

VCSU's Rambow hit a solo home run to kick off the top sixth inning, cutting DSU's lead to 5-2.

The Vikings scored two runs in the top seventh inning.  After VCSU recorded the first two outs of the seventh inning, Demers hit a single and advanced to second base by a wild pitch by DSU's Richard Sternberg.  Rambow was hit-by-pitch.  Bagby hit an RBI single to score Demers and Rambow scored from Trojans' defensive error, cutting DSU's lead by one run at 5-4.

Dakota State secured the game after the Vikings left one runner on base in the final inning.

Harris was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, double and tallied three RBIs for the Trojans.  Serrata added two singles and two RBIs.  Entrikin and Ratkie each had a hit.  Barker and Entrikin each recorded two walks.

Rambow had a home run, double and produced two RBIs for the Vikings.  Meiklejohn added three singles.  Bagby had two singles and an RBI.  Necochea, Demers and Welinski each had a hit.

VCSU recorded 10 hits in the game compared to DSU 6 hits.  The Vikings left 11 runners on base compared to the Trojans 9 runners left on base.

Mitch Bouchard (1-3) earned his first pitching victory for Dakota State.  He worked for six innings and allowed two runs on five hits.  Bouchard struck out five VCSU's batters.  Sternberg recorded a hold after throwing two innings in relief.  He gave up two runs (one unearned) on four hits.  Bryant Westra (S, 1) collected his first save of the season after throwing a scoreless seventh inning.

Leskiw (0-2) recorded the loss for Valley City State.  He pitched two-plus innings and allowed two runs on two hits.  Alex Meza tossed 3 2/3 innings in relief and gave up three runs on three hits.  He recorded seven strikeouts.  Jaime Villarreal worked for 2 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up a hit.

Both Valley City State and Dakota State will conclude their four-game series Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader at Flynn Field.  First game is slated to start at 12 noon.
