MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State earned the first lead of the game in the first game of the baseball non-conference doubleheader versus in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) Tuesday at Flynn Field.  The Lancers used a four-run fifth inning and held off the Trojans for an 8-6 game one victory.  In the second game of the doubleheader, DSU rallied back with a walk-off RBI walk for a 5-4 victory to gain a doubleheader split.

Dakota State's overall record stands at 7-22 overall record.  Mount Marty, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), is 19-12 overall record.  Both Trojans and Lancers wrapped up their season's four-game series with a split (DSU and MMC split in Yankton on March 25).

Game 1:  Mount Marty (S.D.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 6 – FINAL

DSU jumped to a three-run lead in the opening inning.  Tyler Ratkie led off with a walk.  He advanced to second base after MMC Derrik Nelson's wild pitch.  Jake Harris produced an RBI single to score Ratkie for DSU's 1-0 lead.

Ryan Schlesser added a single with two outs in the bottom first, advancing Harris to second base for the Trojans.  Brady Wauer hit an RBI single to score Harris to extend Trojans' lead to 2-0 (David Novak – courtesy runner for Schlesser – advanced to second base).  After another wild pitch by Nelson to advance Novak to third and Wauer to third base, Dakota State made it 3-0 after Richard Sternberg's RBI single to score Novak.

Justin Miller hit a solo home run in the top second inning as Mount Marty cut DSU's lead to 3-1.

He scored his second run of the game in the top fourth frame as the Lancers reduced their deficit to 3-2.  He hit a single to kick off the fourth inning and swiped to second base.  A wild pitch by DSU's Connor Nagel to advance Miller to third base, Julian Cutolo recorded an RBI ground out to score Miller.

MMC put together a four-run offensive outburst in the top fifth inning to overtake a 6-3 lead, highlighted by Cutolo's 2-RBI double.

Dakota State answered back with one run score in the bottom half of the fifth inning.  Harris hit a single with two outs and advanced to second base on the same play caused by MMC's defensive error.  Dylan Deckert blasted an RBI double to score Harris as DSU trimmed Lancers' lead to 6-4.

Derek Blumenstock hit a 2-run home run as Mount Marty's lead grew to 8-4 in the top sixth inning.

The Trojans scored twice in the bottom sixth as the Lancers held on to an 8-6 lead.  Wauer hit a single and Richard Sternberg reached on base by a walk to lead off the Trojans.  Zach Brown hit a ground out to advance Wauer to third base and Sternberg to second base.  JD Farley hit an RBI ground out to score Wauer, followed by Ratkie's RBI single to score Sternberg as the Trojans trailed by two runs.

DSU could not score in the final inning as they left a runner on first base, sealing the victory for the Lancers.

Harris was perfect at plate, going 3-for-3 with three singles and an RBI for the Trojans.  Wauer added three singles and an RBI.  Deckert recorded a double and an RBI.  Sternberg had a single and an RBI.  Schlesser and Brown each had a single.  Farley collected an RBI.

Miller was 3-of-4 at the plate with a home run, two singles and tallied three RBIs for the Lancers.  Cutolo added a double and three RBIs.  Blumenstock had a home run and two RBIs.  Buck had a double and single.  Zac Hollenback, Nelson, Nik Davis and Alex Mueller each had a hit.  Buck, Cody Ulmer and Miller each swiped one base.

Both teams had 11 hits in the game.  MMC left eight runners on base compared to DSU six runners left on base.

Nagel started the game on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He worked for 3 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on six hits.  Anthony Martinez (0-1) recorded the loss in relief, tossing 1 1/3 innings.  He allowed three runs (one unearned) on three hits.  Luke Gassman worked the sixth and seventh innings, giving up two runs on two hits.

Nelson pitched the first inning of the game for the Lancers after giving up three runs on four hits.  Michael Sadler worked a pair of scoreless innings.  Josh Teichroew (3-2) earned the victory in relief as he gave up one run on four hits.  Brody Ries tossed the sixth inning and allowed two runs on two hits.  Bryton Carlson (S, 3) picked up the save as he pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Game 2:  Dakota State (S.D.) 5, Mount Marty (S.D.) 4 – FINAL

After a pair of scoreless innings to kick off the second game of the doubleheader, the Lancers jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top third after Davis led off with a solo home run.

The Trojans tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom third inning.  Jake Ferdinand reached on base by a walk.  He reached safely on second when MMC committed a defensive error after Jake Bonin's fielder choice.  Wauer hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Ferdinand to third base and Bonin to second base.  Sternberg recorded an RBI ground out to score Ferdinand, knotting the game at one-all.

Carlson hit off the top fourth inning with a double for Mount Marty.  Collin Peterson recorded an RBI triple to score Carlson to break a 1-1 tie into a 2-1 lead.  Ulmer added an RBI sacrifice fly to score Peterson as MMC extended their lead to 3-1.

Dakota State was held hitless until the bottom sixth inning.  After Sternberg reached on base-on-balls, Jamie Jorgensen hit a single for DSU's first hit of the game and advanced Sternberg to second base.  Jordan Entrikin produced a 2-RBI double to score Sternberg and Jorgensen as the Trojans tied the game for the second time at 3-3.

The Lancers regained their lead in the top seventh inning to regain a 4-3 lead.  Davis reached on base with a walk.  He advanced to second base after Mueller recorded a sacrifice bunt.  Hollenback flied out to right field as Buck – pinch runner for Davis – advanced to third base.  Carlson made it safely to first base after DSU committed a defensive miscue, allowing Buck to score for Lancers' one-run lead.

The Trojans mounted a rally in the bottom seventh frame.  Wauer earned a walk with one out, followed by Sternberg's single to advance Wauer to second base.  Jorgensen hit an RBI double to score Wauer as DSU tied the game at 4-4 (Sternberg advanced to third base).

Entrikin was given an intentional walk to set up a bases loaded situation for Dakota State with one out.  After Nick Serrata was struck out swinging for the second out in the bottom seventh, pinch-hitter Ratkie recorded a walk-off RBI walk to score Sternberg to earn a 5-4 thrilling victory.

Jorgensen was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, single and produced an RBI for the Trojans.  Entrikin added a double and collected two RBIs.  Sternberg had a hit and an RBI.  Ratkie had a walk and an RBI.  Ferdinand reached on base by a walk twice.  Wauer, Sternberg and Entrikin each recorded a walk.

Davis had a home run and an RBI for the Lancers.  Peterson added a triple and an RBI.  Carlson had a double.  Ulmer had a hit and an RBI. 

DSU and MMC had four hits in the game.  The Trojans left eight runners on base, while the Lancers had six runners left on base.

Danny Lopiparo started the game for Dakota State.  He worked the first four innings and allowed three runs on four hits.  Garrison Collier (2-1) picked up the victory in relief as he tossed three hitless innings.  He gave up an unearned run in the seventh inning.

Derek Miller tossed five innings for Mount Marty.  He held the Trojans to no hits and allowed an unearned run.  He recorded five strikeouts.  Jared Miller (1-1) suffered the loss in relief for MMC as he pitched 1 2/3 innings.  He gave up four runs on four hits and four walks.

Dakota State remains home Wednesday afternoon as they host another GPAC foe, Briar Cliff (Iowa).  It was originally set to play in Sioux City, Iowa, but moved to Flynn Field due to poor weather forecast in Sioux City (DSU will play at Briar Cliff on April 21). 

BCU and DSU will play a nine-inning game with the first pitch starting at 4 p.m.  (As a result, the Trojans are currently in their 13-game home stand at Flynn Field.)
